4. Silas - First Meeting

1148 Words
The party in Evergreen Emerald Pack was in the backyard, but the celebration was humming throughout Alpha’s entire mansion. I can hear the laughter, dancing footsteps and clinking glasses. Warm werewolf energy pulsing like a heartbeat through the house. So different from the cool, velvet-dark calm of vampires. I descended the stairs slowly, Andreas beside me, both of us dressed officially for the evening. It’s a party, yes — But I’m a king. I always carry the weight of a crown. The moment we stepped into the large hall, dozens of werewolves turn to stare. Not exactly with hostility but with curiosity and a hint of caution, because vampires and wolves haven’t mixed socially in six hundred years. Not since the Accord. Me, Andreas and Cassian were having the drinks. That’s when her scent hits me, Mogra, rain-kissed earth, warmth and something closer to home. My dead heart clenches in a way it hasn’t in centuries. Andreas feels me go still. He mutters under his breath, “Oh no.” But I barely hear him — the smell I have been following since 21 years finally has a face. I moved a bit forward to see better in the crowd. Andreas followed. The Birthday Girl - MIRA She is everything the dreams never fully showed me. A brown-gold skin on a cute, soft, oval-shaped face. Large, soulful, almond-shaped eyes. The application of eyeliner and subtle silver eyeshadow, along with the moonstone emphasizes their expressive quality and rich, dark color. There is a lovely contrast between her long dark hair and the vibrant red of her full and mouthwatering lips, contributing to a look that is both bold and graceful. The lighting in the background creates a "halo" effect around her dark, wavy hair, giving her a soft, ethereal glow. Her most captivating feature is her bright, infectious smile. It lights up her entire face and conveys a sense of genuine happiness and approachability. A smile so bright it cracks something inside me. Right then and there I know, I know the way I will love, protect and cherish this creature is woven into the very marrow of my bones, as instinctual as breathing and as necessary as a heartbeat. It is the very purpose for which I was put on this earth. I would stand between her and the storm, and if I have to then I would burn the whole world down just to keep her warm. She’s real. She exists. The world falls away for a moment— There is no pack, no accord, no war, no politics, no danger. Only her. Mira turns and her eyes land on mine. The shock on her face mirrors my own. There is a recognition in her eyes, like she’s seeing a dream she’s held close her whole life. She is taking shallow breaths, and a gasp leaves her slightly open lips. Her hand is trembling. Gods, I so want to take her in my arms right now. Her wolf surges behind her eyes, a flash of silver intensifying her mouthwatering scent. My body takes a single step forward when Andreas’s hand clamps onto my wrist. “Silas. Stop.” His whisper is sharp, urgent. “She’s a werewolf.” I don’t look away from her. “I know.” “Then you also know what this means.” My jaw tightens. He continues, voice low and brutal, “The Accord may not forbid inter-species relationships, but the world does. No vampire–wolf pair has existed in six centuries. They don’t accept half-breeds. They exile them. Or worse..” My fangs ached with the thought of someone harming her. But he’s right. The supernatural world is archaic, cruel and tradition - bound. But the bond inside me, the instinct, the pull. It’s older than politics. Almost older than time. I whispered, “She’s the one. My Destiny Blood Bond. " Andreas’s grip tightens until I feel bone pressure. “Exactly why you must stay still. If you take even one more step, every wolf in this room will feel the shift in the air.” He’s right because my aura—my power—my claim on my Mate—is flaring uncontrollably. I force it down. Painfully so. “Silas,” he says, softer now. “Please. Think. The most important thing right now is to keep her safe, and you are not just a man — but a king.” And that worked. Yes, I am a King, with the weight of the whole Vampire kingdom resting on my shoulder and, above all, no matter what, I have to keep her safe. My foot stops. My body stops. My fate stops. Mira sees it and feels the shift in my mood. All of it. Her expression changed from hope and joy to confusion, and then hurt, a sharp, raw pain that slices through me like sunlight. Her smile fades. Her shoulders falls. Her wolf pulls back inside her sharply as if wounded. She blinks rapidly, trying to hide it, trying to pretend the moment didn’t just happen. By seeing the pain in her eyes, I break inside. Just a little more. Alpha Daniel appears beside her, proud and beaming. Mira puts on a smile for him, a brave, soft, painfully fake smile that doesn’t reach her eyes. If he notices something, he does not comment on it, but her friends do. A blonde she-wolf with playful eyes, I guess named Lily, frowns, nudging her with question in her eyes. Mira shakes her head. A human-looking boy with bright, curious energy, named Ryan leans in close, whispering something that makes her smile for half a second. I am jealous of this boy, who the hell he thinks he is. Then the pack gathers, cheering. She is clearly loved and cherished here. “Mira! Mira! Mira!” A giant chocolate cake is placed before her, sparklers glowing. Mira lifts the knife. Everyone is laughing, singing, hugging. Everyone except her. Her eyes flick toward me just once. Neither hopeful nor curious, just crushed. She cuts the cake. Cheers erupt with the birthday song. She hands slices to her packmates, smiling through it, but the glow she had when I first saw her was gone. Blown out like a candle and it’s my fault. Her best friends close ranks around her. Lily wraps an arm around her shoulders. Ryan murmurs, “Let’s get some air, birthday girl.” Mira nods, grateful. And while everyone else is partying, the three of them slip out quietly. Ethan, the beta, watches them go with a small frown but says nothing. No one else notices. Except me. And Andreas, who sighs heavily. I clench my jaw. Because destiny brought her to me and my sense of duty and need to keep her safe took her away. But this isn’t over. Not even close.
