There’s a bang coming from a shadow resting her right index finger on the trigger of a gun. Startled she drops the gun on the wet law, when she sees another shadow drop on the cold ground. His eyes are wide open and you can see the moonlight flicker in a tear leaving those eyes. The first shadow approaches the body lying on the ground. She sees he is still breathing. Adrenaline is running trough her entire body as she’s putting her hands at the place where a bullet had entered his chest.
‘PLEASE DON’T DIE’ she screams while another tear leaves the corner of her eye. ‘I didn’t mean to do this’. She was hoping he would answer but he doesn’t. He starts shaking, getting into shock. She starts crying harder, knowing he will die any moment now.
‘HELP! SANDER! HELP!’ she tries screaming trough her tears. Soon after that a guy comes running. He heard the gunshot and her calling his name. ‘Sander, he’s dying. Do something’. But Sander doesn’t move. He knows it is to late. The body isn’t shaking anymore. He lies still and looked in peace. Sander pulls the girl away from the body.
‘NOO! We have to save him! Let me save him!’ but he doesn’t listen. He turns her around. He wants here looking away from the body. He sees her face is wet from crying and she’s shaking.
‘It’s too late’ he whispers to her. ‘It’s too late’ he repeats himself. She starts crying harder. He takes her in his arms. Her head resting against his chest. Soon his shirt is getting wet from her tears.
‘I didn’t mean to! I killed him’ she says. She falls to her knees, Sander following her while still holding her.
‘Mia… look at me… please look at me’ he whispers in her ear. She lifts her head facing him. Looking him in the eye. ‘You had to. You know you had to’.
‘That doesn’t mean it is easy! He is still a person! He still had a whole life before him’ Mia stands up wanting to check on him again. But Sander doesn’t let her. He grasps her wrist pulling her back close to him.
‘He isn’t just a person. He is a werewolf! He deserved it!’ He gets angry. He stands up an walks away pulling Mia with him. ‘We have to call the others, before his body gets found. You know the drill’. Mia is resisting, but Sander is stronger and his grip on her wrist is starting to hurt.
‘You’re hurting me, let me go!’ she says while giving him a hit with her other hand on his arm. Sander is letting go of her arm, but puts his arm around her waist still pulling her with him. He wants to make sure she doesn’t run back to the body. When they’re out of sight, hiding behind trees in the dark, he takes his phone from his pocket. He enters a phone number and presses dial.
‘It’s done. We’re in the park. Come soon to get rid of the body’ he says and hangs up. He puts his phone back in his pocket and turns his attention back to Mia next to him. He hates seeing her in pain. But he believes in the system and won’t let her ruin there job. It was simple. Find the werewolf, kill him and done. He has done it a dozens of times, and was pretty good at it. For Mia it was the first time. At first he thought she wouldn’t pull the trigger, but when that monster came closer to her she freaked and before he knew he heard a gunshot and found her next to his body.
‘I can’t believe I killed someone’ she says staring at the field. You could still see the body from here. Sander turned her around.
‘Don’t look at it’ he says, while whipping her tears away with his sleeve. ‘It will get easier’ he tries comforting her.
‘But what if I don’t want to get used to it? This feels so wrong,’ she hates the idea of killing like this. But Sander doesn’t understand. He would do everything to make his family proud.
‘Don’t say that stuff. If they hear you… they can be here any second,’ he’s whispering, like he’s scared his family would hear them speak. ‘When they get here, don’t say stuff like that, please! They could kick you out of the business and probably also ban you from the family. You don’t want that, do you?’ he asks her. She nods, but keeps quiet. They wait for 10 minutes before seeing flashlights in the distance.
‘That’s them, come on’ he says running back on the field. 2 men arrive at the body the same time they do.
‘Hey Uncle Sam’ Sander says nodding at a man around his fifties. He looks serious, not someone to mess with. Uncle Sam is the chief of their operation. He’s been in the business the longest. Next to him stands a young man at the age 28. ‘Hi Kenneth’ Mia says. Kenneth is Mia’s bigger brother. He is the right hand of Uncle Sam, and takes the job very serious. He and Mia are close, but when it comes to this job they are total opposites. He loves the hunt, the excitement of it all. Mia didn’t join the family business before she became 20 a few months ago. She wasn’t sure she would do it, but her brother convinced her it was the right thing to do. It would make the family proud, he told her.
‘Who killed him?’ Uncle Sam says with a deep voice. Sander looks over to Mia. But Mia stays silent. She is focussed on the body at her feet.
‘Mia, are you oke?’ Kenneth asks with concern in his voice. He’s worried seeing his little sister in that way. But Mia doesn’t answer. She doesn’t notice they are talking to her. Sander decides to talk in her place.
‘Mia did the kill. One gunshot in the chest. Death in an instant’ he says calmly. Not trying to make Mia cry again.
‘I knew you had it in you!’ Uncle Sam says proudly. He lays a hand on her shoulder, making her look up to see his face with a big smile on it. ‘Now let’s take his body to the truck, Kenneth give me the body bag’. Kenneth hands it over to him, and goes standing next to Mia.
‘Let us do it. You don’t have to help. Go to the truck. I remember my first time. It isn’t easy. It will never be, but you learn to cope’ he says giving her a hug. Mia listens to her brother and steps away from them to the car. Every step feels heavy. She can’t get the face of the werewolf out of her head. He didn’t even chance to a wolf, he would not have hurt her she things to herself. She goes sit in the truck and by sitting down and the adrenaline level going down she passes out.
°°°
The next thing she remembers is her brother shaking her back to consciousness. She hears Sander speaking to her. Telling her to wake up. She opens her eyes for a second before passing out again.
°°°
Mia wakes up in her bed. She is feeling sick to her stomach. At first she wonders what happened, but then the image of the death body comes back in her mind. Now she is really feeling sick. She jumps out of the bed, running into the bathroom connected to her room. She opens the toilet and vomits. She got there just in time. She sits there for a second, before hearing a familiar voice.
‘Jesus’ Sander says in concerned seeing his best friend hang over the toilet. ‘Are you oke?’ he walks over to her and takes her hair back. He kneels next to her, handing over a piece of toilet paper to clean her mouth.
‘Thanks, I’m oke now’ she says. ‘What happened last night, you know, after it’ she is referring to the killing part.
‘You passed out, we couldn’t get you awake. So we brought you home and laid you in bed. You scared me to be honest’ he helps her up and flushes the toilet. He leads her back to the bedroom sitting both at the end of the bed.
‘I don’t want to do this anymore’ she says. But she knows what Sander is going to say.
‘You can’t stop now! He won’t let you’ he says, referring to Uncle Sam. ‘He is so proud of you also’ he continues.
‘I don’t care! I can’t to this again’ Mia says louder now. Sander puts an arm around her and kisses her forehead.
‘Let me talk to him. Maybe I can convince him you can do the tracking part. So you don’t have to come close to one off them again. You can work from home, like my mom’ he says.
‘You would really do that?’ Mia says.
‘Of course, he is my father after all. If someone can convince him, it’s me’ he blinks. ‘I saw how it hurt you, I don’t want to see that ever again’ he says, giving her another kiss on the forehead. Sander and Mia have been friends since childhood. Their both families have been working together for ages. Because of that they saw each other a lot and became very close. He and Kenneth both joined the business very soon. Sander always hoped Mia would join him, but she never did. Until she became 20 and Kenneth finally convinced her. But seeing her like that… It isn’t worth it. He wants to save her the pain of killing again. He also struggles with killing someone, but his father always told him how dangerous those creatures are. How they kill for sport, and only eat human meat. How they live in dark forests waiting for people to walk by and then kill them. How they have no control over their instincts and aren’t capable of loving or even care for someone other than theirselfs. He knows he is saving more lives than taking lives.
‘Let me handle it’ he stands up and leaves the room. Right on that moment her brother is about to walk in. Kenneth nodes to Sander before heading into her room. He sees the tiered and sad face of his sister and immediately feels regret.
‘I’m sorry I made you do this. I thought you already could handle a mission. It was way to soon. You needed more time to learn and train’ he says. He kneels before her laying his hands on her knees. ‘Are you oke?’
‘I’m tiered and feel sick. But besides that…’ she says sarcastically. ‘How can you do this every week? How can you kill someone without even knowing he is as bad as Uncle Sam says’ she says staring him deep in the eye. Kenneth stands up madly.
‘How can you doubt Uncle Sam like that. After everything he did for us, this is how you thank him. By saying he might be lying’ his stare makes Mia uncomfortable. They fight a lot about this. It isn’t the first time, but she never brought Uncle Sam up in there arguments.
‘I’m not saying he’s lying. I’m just saying there could be some good guys between them. We don’t know they are all killers,’ she says, she is about to say something else but then Uncle Sam him self walks in the room. He feels the tension between the siblings, but ignores it.
‘Mia, what did I hear? You like to quit already? And work at the office?’ he says. Kenneth looks even more mad then before.
‘I just feel like it is not something for me,’ she defence herself, even do Uncle Sam is not mad at her. ‘I think I can be more useful at the office, than on the field’.
‘Alright, if that is what you want’ Uncle Sam says. ‘I talk to you tomorrow’ and he leaves the room again. Kenneth gives Mia one last stare before leaving after him. Mia is left alone, still feeling tiered and sick. She crawls in the bed, under the blanket and in a minute she falls asleep.
