Chapter 4: The Divorce Petition The ballroom was silent. Not the ordinary silence of a gathering waiting for a speech. This was the silence that came before a storm. Thousands of eyes were fixed on Adelle Charlotte Vassilis. The future Duchess of Vassilis stood proudly before the royal court, her silver gown shimmering beneath the chandeliers. In her hands rested a single folder. A simple object. Yet it carried enough power to destroy a man. John Vlahos suddenly felt his heart pounding. For the first time in years, uncertainty crept into his mind. Something was wrong. Very wrong. Still, he forced himself to remain calm. After all, what could Adelle possibly do? She was his wife. A dutiful noblewoman. A woman who had tolerated his neglect for years. Surely she would not publicly embarrass him. Surely she understood the consequences. Surely— "Your Majesty." Adelle's voice cut through the silence. The king nodded. "You may proceed." She took a breath. Then spoke words that shook the entire ballroom. "I stand before this court today to formally petition for the dissolution of my marriage to Lord John Vlahos." The room exploded. Gasps echoed everywhere. Several ladies nearly dropped their wine glasses. Others openly stared. The king himself looked surprised. John froze. For a moment he wondered if he had misheard. Divorce? Adelle wanted a divorce? No. Impossible. Then he laughed. A short, disbelieving laugh. Surely this was some kind of threat. Some emotional outburst. She couldn't possibly be serious. But when he looked at her face— His smile vanished. Because Adelle wasn't angry. She wasn't crying. She wasn't emotional. She was calm. Terrifyingly calm. The expression of a woman who had already made her decision. The expression of a ruler delivering judgment. "Adelle." John stepped forward. "What nonsense is this?" She didn't even look at him. Instead, she addressed the king. "Your Majesty, I have prepared evidence supporting my request." The king's expression grew serious. "Proceed." A royal steward approached and accepted the folder. The documents were handed to the king. Soon several senior ministers began examining them as well. The ballroom remained silent. Every noble present watched with anticipation. John felt irritation growing. This had gone far enough. "Adelle, stop this." Finally, she looked at him. Those blue eyes once filled with love. Now they were empty. "I stopped loving you a long time ago, John." The words struck him harder than any slap. Murmurs spread throughout the room. John's face darkened. "You are embarrassing yourself." "No." Her voice remained calm. "I am correcting a mistake." A few nobles nearly choked on their drinks. Even Duke Alexander looked impressed. His daughter had always been polite. Apparently she had inherited his talent for destroying enemies with elegance. The king cleared his throat. The room quieted again. One of the ministers rose from his seat. His expression was grave. "Lord Vlahos." John frowned. "Yes?" The minister held up a document. "This record shows repeated financial transfers from accounts associated with House Vassilis." John's stomach tightened. The minister continued. "The funds were used to purchase luxury goods, jewelry, property, and gifts." Several nobles exchanged glances. Financial misconduct was serious. Very serious. The minister adjusted his glasses. "The recipient of these purchases appears to be Lady Elena Roswell." Every eye turned toward Elena. Her face immediately paled. The room erupted into whispers. "Impossible." "He used Vassilis money?" "How disgraceful." John quickly recovered. "So what?" The statement shocked everyone. Even the king raised an eyebrow. John continued confidently. "My wife and I share assets." Adelle smiled. A cold smile. "Actually, we do not." John's confidence faltered. She reached into another folder. A second set of documents. "According to our marriage contract, House Vassilis assets remain under my sole authority." The minister examined the contract. A few moments later he nodded. "That is correct." Silence. John suddenly felt sweat forming. For the first time, he realized this wasn't an emotional confrontation. This was a legal battle. And Adelle had prepared. Thoroughly. The minister continued reading. His expression worsened with every page. "Furthermore, witnesses confirm that Lord Vlahos and Lady Roswell have maintained an intimate relationship for approximately two years." A collective gasp swept through the ballroom. Two years. Not weeks. Not months. Two years. The scandal immediately doubled in size. John's face turned pale. Elena looked ready to faint. Still, he refused to surrender. "They are lying." Adelle said nothing. Instead, she nodded toward Clara. The maid stepped forward carrying another stack of papers. Witness statements. Signed. Verified. Merchants. Servants. Coachmen. Innkeepers. Dozens of names. The evidence was overwhelming. The minister read several testimonies aloud. With each statement, John's expression worsened. The nobles began openly staring at him. Not with admiration. Not with respect. With disgust. He had not merely taken a mistress. He had humiliated his wife. Repeatedly. For years. Inside the royal court, honor still mattered. And John had none. The king's face darkened. "Lord Vlahos." John swallowed. "Your Majesty." "Do you deny these allegations?" He hesitated. A fatal mistake. Everyone noticed. The king noticed. The ministers noticed. Adelle noticed. That hesitation was answer enough. Then came the final blow. The one Adelle had saved for last. The one capable of ending everything. She looked directly at Elena. The younger woman immediately trembled. "Lady Roswell." Elena's lips shook. "Y-yes?" Adelle's voice remained gentle. Almost kind. Which somehow made it worse. "How many months pregnant are you?" The question struck like thunder. Several ladies gasped. Others covered their mouths. The king's eyes widened. Elena froze. Completely frozen. John stepped forward. "Enough!" His voice echoed across the ballroom. The first true panic appearing. Adelle ignored him. She withdrew a single paper. A physician's report. Officially sealed. Verified. The minister accepted it. His eyes widened as he read. Then he looked toward the king. "Your Majesty..." The king extended his hand. The document was passed to him. A long silence followed. Then the king slowly lowered the report. His face had become frighteningly cold. "The physician confirms a pregnancy of approximately five months." The ballroom erupted. Some nobles openly stood from their seats. Others began whispering furiously. Everyone understood what this meant. The timing alone was enough. John had been married to Adelle while fathering another woman's child. A child conceived during the marriage. There was no defense. No excuse. No escape. John's world began collapsing around him. "No..." He looked toward Adelle. For the first time, genuine fear appeared in his eyes. "Adelle, listen to me." She remained silent. "Adelle." Nothing. He stepped closer. "You cannot do this." Finally, she spoke. "Cannot?" Her voice was barely above a whisper. Yet the entire ballroom heard it. "You spent years proving exactly why I can." John felt his chest tighten. "You are my wife." A bitter smile appeared. "No." The words struck harder than anything before. "I was your wife." Silence. Absolute silence. John suddenly remembered the woman he had courted years ago. The woman who laughed beside him. The woman who believed in him. The woman who loved him. Somewhere along the way he had stopped seeing her. Stopped appreciating her. Stopped caring. Because he thought she would always remain. Because he thought House Vassilis would eventually belong to him. Because he thought Adelle would never leave. Now, standing before the royal court, he finally realized how wrong he had been. And it terrified him. The king rose from his seat. Instantly the room fell silent. His gaze swept across the ballroom. Finally settling on John. "Lord Vlahos." John swallowed. The king's voice was cold. "Your conduct has brought dishonor upon your marriage, your wife, and the nobility." Every word felt like a hammer blow. The king continued. "House Vassilis has presented sufficient evidence supporting Lady Adelle's petition." Hope disappeared from John's eyes. "No..." The king looked toward Adelle. "Lady Adelle Charlotte Vassilis." She bowed. "Yes, Your Majesty." "Your request for divorce will proceed before the Royal Tribunal." The room erupted once more. Because everyone understood what that meant. The outcome was already decided. This was merely a formality. John staggered backward. His legs suddenly felt weak. The tribunal would confirm everything. His affair. His misuse of funds. The pregnancy. The humiliation. And when the judgment came— He would lose everything. His title. His status. His influence. His future. Across the room, Elena burst into tears. Reality had finally caught up with them. Meanwhile, Adelle simply stood quietly. For the first time in years, she felt lighter. Not because her pain had disappeared. But because she no longer carried it alone. The truth was finally in the open. The lies were finished. The marriage was over. And for the first time in a very long time— Adelle Charlotte Vassilis could finally see the future waiting ahead. A future without John Vlahos. A future that belonged entirely to her.
