Chapter 5: The Royal Tribunal Three days after the royal banquet, the entire kingdom was talking about only one thing. The divorce of Adelle Charlotte Vassilis. Every noble estate. Every merchant house. Every tea salon. Every gathering. The scandal had spread like wildfire. Some pitied Adelle. Some admired her courage. Many condemned John. But regardless of their opinions, everyone agreed on one thing: The Royal Tribunal would determine the future of House Vassilis. And today was the day. --- The Hall of Judgment stood at the heart of the royal palace. It was a vast chamber built from white marble and gold. The kingdom's highest legal authority gathered here. The Royal Tribunal. A place where even dukes bowed before the law. Rows of nobles filled the viewing gallery. The atmosphere was tense. No one wanted to miss what was certain to become a historic trial. At the center of the chamber sat five royal judges. Behind them hung the kingdom's crest. Below them stood two opposing tables. One for the petitioner. One for the defendant. Adelle sat calmly beside Duke Alexander. She wore a simple navy gown. No extravagant jewels. No unnecessary decorations. She looked less like a noblewoman seeking revenge and more like a future ruler carrying out her duty. John, meanwhile, appeared exhausted. Dark circles rested beneath his eyes. For three days he had desperately sought support among the nobility. Most refused to see him. The few who listened quickly abandoned him once they learned the full extent of the scandal. Even his former allies had disappeared. No one wished to associate themselves with a sinking ship. Elena sat behind him. Pale. Silent. Terrified. The confidence she once carried was nowhere to be found. Reality had finally caught up with her. --- A loud strike echoed throughout the chamber. The Chief Justice entered. Everyone rose. The elderly man took his seat before speaking. "The Royal Tribunal is now in session." Silence followed. The Chief Justice looked toward Adelle. "Lady Adelle Charlotte Vassilis, do you maintain your petition for divorce?" "I do." Her voice was steady. Without hesitation. The judge nodded. Then he turned toward John. "Lord John Vlahos, do you contest the petition?" John rose immediately. "Yes." Murmurs spread through the audience. The judges remained expressionless. "State your reasons." John took a deep breath. He had rehearsed this countless times. "My wife has exaggerated personal disputes into legal accusations." The room immediately grew colder. Duke Alexander's eyes narrowed. John continued. "I admit to making mistakes." Several nobles scoffed. Mistakes? That was certainly one way to describe years of infidelity. "But marriage is a sacred institution." John looked toward Adelle. "Any difficulties between husband and wife can be resolved." Adelle simply stared at him. As though he were a stranger. The lack of reaction unsettled him. Still, he pressed forward. "I ask the court to reject this divorce and preserve our marriage." The gallery erupted into whispers. Many nobles looked openly disgusted. Not because John wanted reconciliation. But because everyone knew why. He didn't want Adelle. He wanted House Vassilis. The judges clearly understood this as well. One of them leaned forward. "Lord Vlahos." John stiffened. "If reconciliation is your goal, why did you maintain a relationship with Lady Roswell for two years?" The question struck like a blade. John opened his mouth. Then closed it. No answer came. The judge continued. "Why did you use House Vassilis funds without authorization?" Still no answer. Another judge spoke. "Why is Lady Roswell carrying your child?" The silence became unbearable. John's face turned pale. For the first time, his carefully prepared defense began collapsing. --- The tribunal then allowed Adelle to present her evidence. One by one. Methodically. Without emotion. Witness statements were read aloud. Financial records were displayed. Letters exchanged between John and Elena were presented. The evidence was overwhelming. Each document drove another nail into John's coffin. The judges carefully reviewed everything. Several hours passed. By noon, even the spectators could see the outcome approaching. John had no defense. Only excuses. And excuses carried little weight before the law. Then the Chief Justice asked a question. "Lady Adelle." She stood. "Yes, Your Honor." "Do you possess any additional evidence?" The room quieted. John immediately relaxed. There couldn't possibly be more. She had already presented everything. Hadn't she? Adelle exchanged a glance with her father. Duke Alexander gave a small nod. Then she turned toward the judges. "Yes." John's stomach dropped. A servant approached carrying a sealed wooden box. The object looked ordinary. Yet the moment it appeared, Duke Alexander smiled. John immediately knew. Something was wrong. Very wrong. The box was placed before the tribunal. The Chief Justice opened it. Inside were dozens of documents. The old judge's eyes widened. Then narrowed. Slowly. Dangerously. "What are these?" Adelle answered calmly. "The complete audit of Lord Vlahos's activities during the past four years." John's face lost all color. No. No, no, no. Not that. Anything but that. The judges began reviewing the contents. The longer they read, the darker their expressions became. One of them suddenly slammed a document onto the table. The sound echoed throughout the chamber. "Lord Vlahos!" John nearly jumped. "This states you sold trade contracts belonging to House Vassilis." The gallery gasped. Another judge spoke. "You accepted bribes from merchants seeking favorable treatment." A second gasp. A third judge added: "You transferred confidential information regarding ducal investments." The room erupted. Even the nobles were shocked. The affair had been scandalous. This was something else entirely. This bordered on corruption. John staggered backward. Sweat poured down his face. Adelle watched quietly. There was no satisfaction in her expression. Only disappointment. Because these were not accusations. They were facts. Facts she had discovered while investigating his affair. Facts she had initially struggled to believe herself. The man she married had not only betrayed her. He had betrayed House Vassilis. --- "You lied." The words escaped before Adelle realized she had spoken. The chamber fell silent. John looked at her. For a brief moment, she saw the man she once loved. Or perhaps the man she thought she loved. "You told me you cared about this family." Her voice trembled slightly. The first crack in her composure. "You told me you respected my father." John looked away. "You promised me we would build our future together." Silence. Pain flickered across her eyes. Not because she still loved him. But because she finally understood. The man she had married never truly existed. He had always wanted power. Status. Influence. She had simply been the bridge leading to those things. The realization hurt more than the affair ever could. --- The Chief Justice interrupted. "Lord Vlahos." John looked up. The judge's expression was terrifying. "Do you deny these accusations?" John's lips trembled. Every instinct told him to lie. But the evidence was overwhelming. The witnesses were numerous. The documents were authentic. The financial records were undeniable. He was trapped. Completely trapped. And for the first time, genuine panic took hold. If the tribunal confirmed everything— He would lose far more than his marriage. He could lose his noble status entirely. The realization struck him like lightning. Suddenly, he dropped to his knees. The chamber gasped. No one had expected this. Not from John Vlahos. Not from a man so arrogant. "Adelle." His voice broke. She stared at him. Expressionless. "Please." The word echoed throughout the hall. "Please forgive me." Silence. The nobles watched in disbelief. John crawled forward. Humiliating himself. Desperate. "I made mistakes." Tears formed in his eyes. "I was foolish." Still no response. "Give me another chance." His voice cracked. "We can fix this." The silence continued. John looked up desperately. "Adelle..." Finally, she spoke. The words were soft. Quiet. Yet they struck harder than any shout. "What exactly are you asking me to forgive?" John froze. Adelle stepped forward. "What should I forgive first?" Her eyes met his. "The cheating?" Silence. "The lies?" Nothing. "The stolen money?" John lowered his head. "The humiliation?" The judges watched closely. Every noble listened. Every servant. Every witness. The entire kingdom seemed to hold its breath. Adelle's voice remained calm. "Or should I forgive the fact that your mistress is carrying your child while you stand here asking for another chance?" John couldn't answer. Because there was no answer. No excuse. No justification. Nothing. At last, Adelle looked away. The conversation was over. So was the marriage. --- Late that afternoon, the judges finally returned with their decision. The entire chamber rose. Tension filled the air. The Chief Justice unfolded the verdict. His voice echoed throughout the Hall of Judgment. "After reviewing all evidence presented before this tribunal..." Nobody moved. Nobody breathed. "We find sufficient legal grounds to dissolve the marriage between Lady Adelle Charlotte Vassilis and Lord John Vlahos." A collective gasp swept through the room. It was done. The marriage was over. Officially. Legally. Irrevocably. Adelle closed her eyes briefly. Not in sorrow. In relief. The burden she had carried for years finally disappeared. The Chief Justice continued. "Furthermore, this tribunal recommends that Lord John Vlahos be stripped of all privileges granted through House Vassilis pending further royal review." John collapsed. The last hope vanished from his eyes. His world had ended. And everyone knew it. As the tribunal concluded, Adelle stood quietly beside her father. For the first time in years, she felt free. She didn't yet know what the future held. She didn't know that fate would soon bring a certain Crown Prince of Baratheon into her life. She didn't know that a far greater love awaited her. But one chapter of her story had finally ended. And another was about to begin.
