The prefects called us all together and led us into the main hall. Cameron shouted for me and patted the empty seat next to him; I smiled and sat down. “Thanks, man,” I stated, and the principal walked onto the stage. She told everyone to quiet down and waited for us to all settle. I looked around and spotted Jane and Rocksyn in the front seat. I wanted to always keep my target in sight. “Let’s start off by welcoming you all to Encore High. I know high school might be scary, so take a deep breath. You made it! You’re in grade 8.” The principal remarked, and Cameron cheered along with the rest of the crowd. I noticed Jane kept quiet and held her gaze on the floor while Rocksyn clapped her hands and cheered. Maybe she hated school just like I did? “Woop! Anyways, I want all the prefects to please join me on stage. For the first week, the prefects will all be wearing a white shirt with the word ‘prefect’ at the back, so you can all easily identify them. Get to know your prefects because they will be the ones helping you throughout the year.” The principal added. Each prefect started introducing themselves, but I lost interest. I focused on Jane. She looked behind her and then glanced in my direction. She didn’t even look at me but seemed to stare straight through everyone. “Dude, check out the first rugby team,” Cameron stated and showed me a picture on his phone. The rugby team had strong-looking oaks. “They didn’t lose a single game last year.” He added the asked, “Do you play?” “Yes, sir. I was in our A team last year.” “Bro, I knew we were meant to be friends. You are coming with when trials start.” He ordered. “Deal. What subjects are you taking?” “Geo, maths lit, accounting and history. You?” He asked, so I told him my subjects. “At least we’ll have geo and maths together. Hopefully, the language classes as well.” Cameron smiled. “Hey, you two. Keep it down.” A girl in front of us snapped. Cameron and I looked at each other and burst out laughing. The girl rolled her eyes and turned back to face the front. “That’s one of the suck-ups,” Cameron whispered. He scrolled through his phone and showed me pictures of girls he was currently talking to. They were stunning, and we spent the rest of the time looking at memes on his phone. The principal explained that later tonight, we were all going to a social. Which was a dance that they organised for us to make friends with more people in the grade. The theme was semi-casual. After the assembly in the hall, we were divided into groups amongst the prefects. I made sure Cameron and I were in the same group as Rocksyn and Jane. We then were shown a tour around the school, we didn’t talk to the girls, but at least I could observe Jane. She was reticent, and Rocksyn did most of the talking. I noticed she always hugged her body and seemed lost, which was a sign of grief. Perhaps she lost someone close to her? I observed that she mostly looked at the floor while she walked and tensed up whenever anyone was nearby. She liked her personal space. Jane also had a very loose clothes style and bit her nails. Her hair was simply put into a ponytail and looked like she hadn’t even brushed it. She wore no makeup and no jewellery. Clearly, she wasn’t bothered by her appearance. After the tour, which might I add Encore is flippen cool, we had lunch in the cafeteria. Cameron had round up all the guys that wanted to try out for U14 A rugby team, and we all sat at the same table. We had to push two tables together for all of us. Rocksyn and Jane sat at a table near the wall, but they were still close enough for me to keep an eye on Jane. “Bro, check how that spoon touches her lips.” Cameron groaned. He was staring at Rocksyn while she ate the yoghurt we were given for lunch. “You’re such a creep.” I laughed, and he shoved my shoulder. I bit into my sandwich and watched Jane peel her banana. Instead of softly putting her lips over it, she just bit it. My d**k twitched in pain as I imagined her going down on me. Where the heck was my head at? I shuddered and focused my attention on the guys at the table. Cameron was the focus as he made jokes and made everyone laugh. He was a cool dude. After lunch, we went to classes. Cameron and I chose the desk right at the back of the class in Maths lit; Rocksyn was also in our class, which Cameron was excited about. I looked at him to calm down as she sat in front of him; he excitedly punched his fist into the air. I laughed at him, and Rocksyn turned around; she looked at us confused then faced the front again. The teacher introduced himself, and we all went around saying our names. Rocksyn stood up, and her skirt rose a bit which Cameron noticed and looked at me with wide eyes. I burst out laughing at him. “Why do you keep laughing at me?” Rocksyn asked, irritated. “Mr Mecer, what do you find so funny?” The teacher asked. “Sir, I wasn’t laughing at Rocksyn. I thought of this joke. So, a female officer arrests a drunk guy and says the common ‘You have the right to remain silent. Anything you say can and will be held against you’ line. The drunk looks and her and replies, boobs.” I stated, and the class burst out laughing, including Rocksyn. “Mr Mecer, please keep inappropriate comments to yourself.” The teacher muttered and asked the girl next to Rocksyn to stand up and tell the class her name. “Good cover,” Cameron whispered. The next class I had was business; Morando sat next to me. After that, English, then Afrikaans, then Consumers and then we had a second break. I had geography in my last period; it was the only class I shared with Jane. Rocksyn was literally in all my classes, and she rolled her eyes at me every single time. She and Jane sat at the back desk in the classroom corner, and Cameron made us sit in front of them. I hadn’t said a word to Jane yet, and this way, I couldn’t observe her. I turned around to face them and cleared my throat.
