Chapter 12: The Awakening

1122 Words
The laboratory fell silent. Not the ordinary kind of silence. Not the silence that followed an argument or a gunshot. This was different. Heavier. Almost unnatural. Every scientist in the room stared at Sophia. Every guard. Every technician. Every researcher. Nobody moved. Nobody breathed. Because what stood before them should have been impossible. Silver energy flowed across Sophia's skin like liquid moonlight. The glow illuminated the entire chamber. Machines sparked. Computer screens flickered. Glass cracked. The air itself seemed alive. Sophia floated several feet above the floor. Her eyes shone silver. Bright. Powerful. Terrifying. And beautiful. Dr. Evelyn's lips parted. For the first time since Sophia had met her, the woman looked genuinely stunned. Not frightened. Not worried. Amazed. Like a scientist witnessing history. Like an artist seeing a masterpiece. Like a fanatic seeing a god. "Extraordinary," Evelyn whispered. Sophia barely heard her. Pain still tore through every part of her body. Her bones felt as though they were being pulled apart. Rebuilt. Changed. Memories flooded her mind faster than she could process them. A laboratory. White walls. Cold floors. Needles. Doctors. Scientists. Her mother. Always her mother. Crying. Begging. Running. Sophia gasped. The memories weren't dreams. They weren't imagination. They were real. Every one of them. "No..." The word escaped her lips. A little girl sat inside an observation room. Watching wolves behind reinforced glass. Watching experiments. Watching creatures scream. The little girl was her. Another memory struck. Her mother carrying her through a corridor. Alarms blaring. Red lights flashing. People shouting. Then darkness. Sophia cried out. The memories came faster. Too fast. A voice echoed through her mind. Protect her. Get her out. Run. Then another voice. Subject Eighteen stable. Compatibility increasing. The child is adapting. Sophia's entire body trembled. She remembered. Not everything. But enough. Enough to know her childhood had been built on lies. Enough to know Evelyn had stolen years of her life. Enough to know the truth was far worse than she imagined. Above ground, Kieran's wolf exploded through another security checkpoint. The facility shook beneath his fury. Every instinct screamed the same thing. Mate. Pain. Danger. Find her. His claws ripped through steel. His massive body smashed through reinforced barriers. Nothing could stop him. Nothing. Not tonight. Not when Sophia needed him. The bond connecting them burned hotter with every passing second. He could feel her pain. Her fear. Her confusion. It tore at him from the inside. Logan sprinted behind him. Sarah followed close behind. Colonel Hayes barked orders into his radio. The rescue team pushed deeper into the compound. But even moving at full speed, they struggled to keep up. Kieran was beyond reason. Beyond strategy. Beyond planning. He wasn't fighting as an Alpha. He was fighting as a mate. And there was nothing more dangerous than a mate protecting their other half. Ryan stood frozen in the ruined laboratory. The ground trembled beneath him. Alarms screamed throughout the facility. His heart pounded. Everything was happening exactly as he feared. For years he had convinced himself he was helping. Convinced himself Evelyn was right. Convinced himself sacrifice was necessary. Now he wasn't so sure. Sophia's screams echoed through the building. Each one felt like a knife. And Kieran's rage... That frightened him most. Because he knew his brother. Knew exactly how far he would go. Exactly what he would destroy. Exactly who he would kill. Ryan rubbed a hand over his face. The guilt was becoming unbearable. Then a monitor flickered. Evelyn appeared on the screen. Calm. Collected. Watching everything unfold. "Ryan." He didn't answer. The scientist tilted her head. "Something troubles you." Ryan laughed bitterly. "Really?" Evelyn remained silent. "You used me." The accusation hung in the air. "You used all of us." For the first time, Evelyn's smile faded slightly. "Everything I've done has been necessary." Ryan's jaw tightened. "Necessary?" He pointed toward the laboratory below. Toward Sophia. Toward the chaos. "Look around." Evelyn's expression hardened. "The future requires sacrifices." Ryan closed his eyes. Because that was the exact same justification she'd used for years. The exact same excuse. And suddenly it sounded hollow. Empty. Wrong. Sophia crashed to the floor. The silver energy vanished. At least for the moment. Her breathing came in ragged gasps. Every muscle hurt. Every bone ached. She felt exhausted. Completely drained. The chamber door exploded inward. The sound echoed like thunder. Sophia looked up. And her heart nearly stopped. Kieran. He stood in the doorway. Covered in blood. Covered in dust. Looking wild. Dangerous. Beautiful. For a moment neither moved. Neither spoke. Then Sophia burst into tears. The relief was overwhelming. "Kieran." His eyes immediately found hers. Everything else disappeared. The scientists. The guards. The laboratory. Nothing mattered. Only her. Always her. He crossed the room in seconds. Dropping to his knees beside her. His hands gently framed her face. As though afraid she might disappear. As though afraid she wasn't real. "Sophia." The sound of her name broke something inside him. She threw her arms around his neck. Holding him tightly. Desperately. Neither cared who was watching. Neither cared about appearances. All that mattered was that they were together. Alive. Safe. For the first time in days. Kieran buried his face in her hair. Breathing her in. His wolf finally calmed. Mate safe. Mate found. Mate home. Sophia closed her eyes. For the first time since her capture, she felt protected. Then slow applause echoed through the laboratory. The moment shattered instantly. Dr. Evelyn stepped forward. Smiling. Watching. Waiting. The scientist looked pleased. Far too pleased. "As touching as that is..." Kieran immediately moved in front of Sophia. Protective. Dangerous. Ready to kill. Evelyn noticed. And laughed softly. "There he is." Her eyes settled on Kieran. "The Alpha." Kieran's growl echoed through the chamber. Every guard stepped backward. Instinctively. Fearfully. Wisely. Evelyn ignored it. "You came exactly as predicted." Sophia frowned. Predicted? The scientist smiled wider. "Everything happened exactly as planned." The room fell silent. Sophia felt dread settle in her stomach. Because Evelyn sounded confident. Too confident. And confident enemies were the most dangerous kind. Far above them, Colonel Hayes finally reached the underground level. The moment he entered the hidden facility, his face went pale. The equipment. The technology. The records. He recognized everything. Project Origin. The project he'd spent years trying to forget. The project he'd convinced himself had died. A young soldier approached. "Sir?" Hayes stared at a wall filled with names. Test subjects. Experiments. Failures. Children. His stomach twisted. Because among the names... He found Sophia's. And beside it, a note written decades ago. The Perfect Candidate. Hayes felt sick. Because suddenly he understood why Evelyn wanted Sophia so badly. And why she would never willingly let her go.
