Chapter 9: A New Threat

1466 Words
For the first time in years, Sophia slept peacefully. No nightmares. No fear. No sounds of distant howls. Just peace. When morning arrived, sunlight streamed through the cabin windows. The mountains looked beautiful. Fresh. Alive. Hopeful. Sophia smiled as she watched Ethan and Lily eating breakfast. The children looked happier. Safer. Like children again. And Kieran... Kieran sat at the table beside them. Still human. Still here. Every now and then Sophia caught herself staring at him. His smile. His laugh. The way he listened when Lily talked about completely random things. The way Ethan had already begun treating him like family. Everything felt natural. As if he had always belonged there. The realization both comforted and terrified her. Because happiness had never lasted long in her life. And deep down... She knew trouble was coming. She was right. Several miles away. Deep beneath the mountains. A hidden facility hummed with life. Unlike Genetech, this laboratory had never been discovered. Never exposed. Never shut down. Screens illuminated a massive underground control room. Scientists moved between stations. Guards patrolled the hallways. Computers monitored thousands of files. At the center of everything stood a woman. Dr. Evelyn Cross. Tall. Elegant. Terrifying. Unlike Victor, she didn't enjoy chaos. Unlike the military, she wasn't interested in control through force. She preferred something far more dangerous. Manipulation. One of her scientists approached nervously. "Ma'am." She didn't look away from the screen. "What is it?" The scientist swallowed. "Subject Forty-Seven has transformed." That got her attention. Slowly. Very slowly. She turned. "Impossible." The scientist quickly handed her a tablet. Video footage played. Kieran. Human. Alive. Standing beside Sophia. Evelyn smiled. Not a pleasant smile. A calculating smile. "Interesting." The scientist looked uncomfortable. "What should we do?" Evelyn's eyes settled on Sophia's image. The smile widened. "Find her." The room fell silent. Because everyone understood what that meant. Sophia wasn't the target. She was the key. Meanwhile... Back at the cabin... Colonel Hayes arrived unexpectedly. Sophia immediately knew something was wrong. The man's expression looked grim. Very grim. "What happened?" Hayes removed his hat. "We intercepted a transmission." Sophia frowned. "A transmission from who?" The Colonel hesitated. Then answered. "Genetech." The name immediately changed the atmosphere. Kieran went still. Completely still. The fear that flashed across his face broke Sophia's heart. Because she knew exactly what that name meant to him. Pain. Years of pain. Hayes continued. "We thought Genetech was finished." Silence. "We were wrong." Kieran slowly stood. His jaw tightened. "They're alive." The Colonel nodded. "We believe someone has rebuilt part of the program." Sophia's stomach dropped. "Why?" Nobody answered immediately. Because nobody knew. Not yet. Then Hayes revealed the worst part. "They know where you are." The room froze. Every person present felt the danger immediately. Especially Kieran. Because if Genetech found Sophia... They would use her. And if they used her... They could control him. The thought filled him with rage. Not fear. Rage. Because nobody was taking her. Nobody. Not ever again. That night Kieran couldn't sleep. The mountains were quiet. Too quiet. He sat outside alone. Watching the stars. Thinking. Sophia eventually joined him. Without saying anything, she sat beside him. Close enough for their shoulders to touch. Neither moved away. For several minutes they simply enjoyed the silence. Then Sophia spoke. "Are you scared?" Kieran smiled sadly. "Terrified." The honesty surprised her. "You?" Sophia laughed softly. "Absolutely." They sat there smiling. Two frightened people pretending to be brave. Together. Eventually Kieran turned toward her. Blue eyes meeting blue eyes. "If anything happens..." Sophia immediately shook her head. "No." He blinked. "What?" "Don't." Her voice trembled. "Don't give me one of those heroic speeches." Kieran laughed. A real laugh. The sound made her heart skip. "I wasn't." "You were." "I was." Sophia smiled. Then, without thinking, she leaned forward. And kissed him. Softly. Gently. For one perfect moment the world disappeared. No experiments. No monsters. No danger. Just them. When they finally pulled apart, neither could stop smiling. Neither wanted to. Unfortunately... They weren't alone. Far away. Hidden among the trees. A small drone hovered silently. Watching. Recording. Transmitting. Every second. Every movement. Every kiss. Back to Dr. Evelyn Cross. Who watched the footage with great interest. Then she whispered words that would change everything. "Prepare the retrieval team." The scientist beside her hesitated. "How many operatives?" Evelyn smiled. "All of them." Because she wasn't coming for Kieran. She was coming for Sophia. The mountains were silent. Too silent. The kind of silence that warned of danger. The kind of silence predators loved. Sophia slept peacefully beside Lily. For the first time in weeks, she felt safe. Protected. Loved. Outside, Kieran sat on the porch. Unable to sleep. Something felt wrong. His instincts had been screaming all night. Danger. Close. Very close. The moon hung high above the mountains. Silver light illuminated the forest. Everything appeared calm. But Kieran knew better. Monsters rarely announced themselves. Then he heard it. A faint buzz. His eyes narrowed. Drone. The sound came from above. Almost invisible against the night sky. Watching. Recording. Kieran immediately stood. Every muscle tightened. The threat had arrived. And it was coming for Sophia. Suddenly— BOOM! An explosion rocked the mountains. The cabin windows shattered instantly. Everyone inside woke screaming. "What happened?!" Sarah shouted. Another explosion followed. Then another. The forest erupted with lights. Floodlights. Vehicles. Armed soldiers. Dozens of them. "No..." Kieran growled. Not soldiers. Operatives. Genentech. The cabin was surrounded. Inside, Sophia grabbed Ethan and Lily. Fear exploded through her chest. The walls shook. Glass covered the floor. Children cried. People shouted. Chaos erupted. Outside, armored vehicles emerged from the trees. Black uniforms. Advanced weapons. Military-grade equipment. Dr. Evelyn Cross had come prepared. One operative raised a loudspeaker. "SUBJECT FORTY-SEVEN!" The voice echoed through the mountains. "SURRENDER IMMEDIATELY!" Kieran's lips curled back. A growl rumbled from deep within his chest. Never. The loudspeaker continued. "OR WE TAKE THE WOMAN." Everything stopped. For one terrifying moment. Everything. Then Kieran transformed. Silver light exploded around him. Bones shifted. Muscles expanded. The wolf returned. Bigger. Angrier. Deadlier. The operatives immediately opened fire. Gunshots erupted. Bullets slammed into trees. Rocks. The ground. Kieran charged. Like a hurricane. Like death itself. The first vehicle flipped completely over. The second smashed into a tree. Operatives scattered. Screaming. Running. Firing. Nothing slowed him down. Because they had threatened Sophia. And that was a mistake. A terrible mistake. Inside the command vehicle, Dr. Evelyn watched calmly. Almost bored. As if the battle unfolding outside meant nothing. One scientist looked nervous. "He's stronger than predicted." Evelyn smiled. "I know." The scientist frowned. "Then why are we here?" The smile widened. "Because he's not our target." Her eyes moved to a screen. A live feed of Sophia. "She is." Back at the cabin, Sophia helped the children into a hidden cellar beneath the floorboards. Sarah followed closely. "What do we do?" Sophia didn't know. For the first time since meeting Kieran... She genuinely didn't know. The battle outside sounded impossible. Roars. Explosions. Gunfire. It felt like the world was ending. Then the cabin door exploded inward. Sophia screamed. Three armed operatives stormed inside. Weapons raised. "No!" Ethan stepped in front of Lily. Again. Always protecting his sister. The sight nearly broke Sophia's heart. One operative grabbed her arm. "Target secured." Sophia fought immediately. Kicking. Punching. Scratching. Anything. Everything. But the operatives were trained. Strong. And there were too many. Outside, Kieran froze. A familiar scent hit him. Sophia. Fear. Terror. Pain. His heart stopped. Then he heard her scream. "KIERAN!" The entire mountain shook. The roar that erupted from Kieran was unlike anything heard before. Not wolf. Not human. Something else. Something ancient. Something terrifying. Every operative froze. Every animal in the forest fled. Even Dr. Evelyn looked impressed. "Remarkable." But it was too late. The extraction team already had Sophia. An armored helicopter descended from the sky. The operatives dragged Sophia toward it. She fought desperately. "Ethan!" "Mom!" The boy's scream shattered the night. Lily cried uncontrollably. Sarah held them back. Barely. Sophia reached toward them. Toward her children. Toward Kieran. Toward her family. Then the helicopter lifted off. Taking her with it. "No!" Kieran launched himself into the air. His claws nearly reached the aircraft. Nearly. But not quite. The helicopter disappeared into the darkness. Taking Sophia with it. Leaving behind silence. Shock. And devastation. Ethan fell to his knees. Lily sobbed. Sarah looked heartbroken. The entire world seemed to stop. Kieran stood motionless. Staring into the sky. Watching the helicopter vanish. His chest rose and fell heavily. Blue eyes burned. Not with sadness. Not with grief. With rage. Pure rage. Dr. Evelyn had taken the one thing he loved. And now... There would be nowhere on earth she could hide.
