Chapter 10: Into the Lion's Den

1516 Words
Sophia woke up in darkness. For several moments she couldn't remember where she was. Her head throbbed. Her body ached. Everything felt wrong. Then memory returned. The attack. The helicopter. Kieran. Her eyes snapped open. "No." Cold metal walls surrounded her. Bright white lights flickered overhead. The room smelled of chemicals and disinfectant. A laboratory. Genentech. Fear settled heavily in her chest. Sophia rushed to the door. Locked. She pounded against it. "Let me out!" Silence answered. Then a voice echoed through hidden speakers. "Good. You're awake." Sophia froze. Dr. Evelyn Cross. The calm voice sent chills down her spine. "What do you want from me?" A soft laugh echoed through the room. "You." The answer terrified her. Because Evelyn sounded completely sincere. Meanwhile... Hundreds of miles away... Kieran was preparing for war. The mountain cabin had become a command center. Maps covered tables. Military reports were scattered everywhere. Weapons lined the walls. Colonel Hayes stood beside Sarah. Both looked exhausted. Neither had slept. Neither had Kieran. The silver wolf hadn't moved from the porch since Sophia was taken. Twenty hours. Twenty hours of rage. Twenty hours of guilt. Twenty hours of imagining Sophia alone. Afraid. Waiting. His hands clenched into fists. He should have stopped them. He should have protected her. He should have— "Kieran." A small voice interrupted his thoughts. Lily. The little girl stood beside him holding her stuffed rabbit. Tears still stained her cheeks. Yet she offered him the toy. Kieran blinked. "What is this?" Lily pushed it toward him. "My bunny." Confusion crossed his face. "Why?" The little girl smiled sadly. "Because you're sad." Silence. The room went completely silent. Even Colonel Hayes looked emotional. Kieran slowly accepted the rabbit. His throat tightened unexpectedly. No one had shown him kindness like this in years. Lily wrapped her arms around him. And suddenly the giant werewolf felt like crying. "We'll get Mommy back." The certainty in her voice was absolute. Kieran closed his eyes. "Yes." His voice was rough. "We will." Across the room, Ethan stepped forward. The boy looked determined. Far older than his years. "When do we leave?" Everyone looked at him. Colonel Hayes sighed. "This is dangerous." Ethan folded his arms. "So is letting them keep her." Nobody had a response. Because he was right. Hours later... Dr. Evelyn entered Sophia's cell. For the first time, Sophia saw her face. Elegant. Beautiful. Terrifying. Evelyn sat calmly across from her. "You've caused quite a stir." Sophia glared. "Go to hell." Evelyn smiled. "Strong." The compliment felt wrong. Very wrong. "What do you want?" Evelyn folded her hands. "You transformed him." Sophia frowned. "What?" "Kieran." The name made her heart ache. Immediately. Evelyn noticed. Interesting. Very interesting. The scientist leaned forward. "Do you know how many years we studied him?" Sophia remained silent. "We tried everything." More silence. "Every treatment." Every experiment. Every procedure. Nothing worked. Then Evelyn smiled. "And along came you." Sophia's stomach dropped. Because she finally understood. They didn't want Kieran. They wanted whatever connection existed between them. Whatever had made him human again. Whatever had changed him. And they intended to use it. Back at the cabin... A helicopter landed nearby. Everyone rushed outside. Colonel Hayes frowned. "What now?" The aircraft door opened. Several people stepped out. One of them made Kieran freeze. Completely. "No way." The man smiled. Dark hair. Green eyes. A familiar face. "Kieran." Shock flooded him. Because he recognized him instantly. From before Genentech. From before the experiments. From before everything. "Logan?" His best friend. The man he'd believed dead for seven years. Logan grinned. "Heard you got yourself a girl." Kieran stared. Then punched him. Hard. Logan laughed. "Yep." He rubbed his shoulder. "Definitely still you." For the first time since Sophia's kidnapping... A tiny spark of hope appeared. Because Logan wasn't alone. Behind him stood a specialized rescue team. Former soldiers. Former agents. People who hated Genetech as much as Kieran did. Logan's expression became serious. "We found the facility." Silence. Every person present stopped breathing. Kieran stepped forward. "Where?" Logan placed a file on the table. A single photograph stared back at them. An enormous underground compound hidden beneath a mountain range. He pointed at it. "That's where they're holding Sophia." Kieran's eyes hardened instantly. No hesitation. No fear. No doubt. Only purpose. He looked around the room. At Ethan. At Lily. At Sarah. At Colonel Hayes. At Logan. Then he made a promise. One simple promise. "I bring her home." And every person there believed him. The underground facility looked impossible. Massive steel walls. Armed guards. Security towers. Military-grade defenses. It wasn't a laboratory anymore. It was a fortress. Kieran stared at the satellite images spread across the table. Every instinct screamed the same thing. Sophia was in there. Waiting. And every second she remained inside Genentech increased the danger. Logan pointed toward the center of the map. "The holding cells are here." Colonel Hayes nodded. "Our intelligence suggests Dr. Cross operates from this level." Several floors beneath the mountain. Buried deep underground. Designed to keep people in. Not let them out. Sarah crossed her arms. "Wonderful." Logan smirked. "I never said this would be easy." Meanwhile... Deep beneath the mountain... Sophia was discovering exactly how dangerous Evelyn truly was. The scientist led her through a corridor lined with reinforced glass. At first Sophia thought they were empty rooms. Then she looked closer. People. Dozens of them. Men. Women. Teenagers. All imprisoned. All experimental subjects. Her stomach turned. Some had wolf traits. Others looked completely human. Yet every one of them looked terrified. "Evelyn..." The scientist smiled. "Yes?" Sophia stared at the prisoners. "You're still doing this." Evelyn's expression didn't change. "Of course." The casual answer horrified her. "Why?" Evelyn stopped walking. For the first time, genuine emotion appeared in her eyes. Ambition. "Because evolution doesn't ask permission." Sophia felt sick. "You're insane." Evelyn laughed. "I've been called worse." They continued walking. Eventually they reached a large laboratory. Machines filled the room. Computer screens displayed genetic data. Research notes covered entire walls. And in the center stood something that made Sophia's blood run cold. A photograph. Of her. Dozens of them. Different angles. Different locations. Different dates. Sophia stepped backward. "What is this?" Evelyn smiled. "You." Fear exploded inside her. Because the scientist had been watching her long before the kidnapping. Long before Kieran. Long before everything. "You've been studying me?" Evelyn nodded. "For months." Sophia's heart hammered. "Why?" The answer changed everything. "Because your blood is unique." Silence. Absolute silence. "What?" Evelyn opened a file. Medical reports appeared. DNA sequences. Research notes. Test results. "Your genetics contain a dormant mutation." Sophia frowned. "I don't understand." Evelyn's smile widened. "I know." The scientist approached slowly. "You're the first naturally compatible human we've ever found." The room seemed to tilt. Compatible. With what? Then realization struck. The wolf experiments. Kieran. The transformation. Everything. "No." Evelyn nodded. "Yes." Sophia's legs felt weak. The scientist's voice softened. "Your connection with Kieran wasn't an accident." The words shattered her. Because she knew they were important. Terrifyingly important. Back at the mountain cabin... Preparations were complete. Weapons loaded. Vehicles ready. Routes planned. The rescue mission would begin at sunset. Everyone knew the risks. Everyone knew some of them might not return. Yet nobody hesitated. Especially Kieran. He stood alone outside the cabin. Watching the mountains. Thinking about Sophia. Logan joined him quietly. For several moments neither spoke. Then Logan sighed. "She's worth it." Kieran smiled. Immediately. Without hesitation. "Yeah." Logan laughed. "I've never seen you like this." Kieran looked toward the horizon. Neither had he. Because before Sophia, survival had been enough. Now it wasn't. Now he wanted a future. A home. A family. A life. Things he had stopped dreaming about years ago. Then Logan became serious. "There's something else." Kieran frowned. The tone worried him. "What?" Logan handed him a file. Old. Worn. Damaged. Kieran opened it. His entire body froze. Because the photograph staring back at him was familiar. Very familiar. A younger version of himself. Standing beside another man. His brother. The brother he'd believed dead for seven years. Kieran's hands trembled. "No." Logan nodded slowly. "We found records." Silence. "He survived." The world stopped. Kieran hadn't thought about his brother in years. The pain had been too much. Too unbearable. Yet now... Hope appeared. Dangerous hope. "Where is he?" Logan's expression darkened. The answer came quietly. "He works for Evelyn." The words hit like a bullet. Kieran stared. Unable to process them. Unable to breathe. Because somehow... The rescue mission had just become personal. Very personal. Miles away, hidden beneath the mountain... Dr. Evelyn stood before a large observation window. Watching Sophia through reinforced glass. A scientist approached nervously. "Ma'am." Evelyn didn't look away. "What is it?" "The rescue team has mobilized." A smile appeared. Exactly as she'd expected. Exactly as she'd planned. "Good." The scientist frowned. "You want them to come?" Evelyn's eyes gleamed. "More than anything." Because Sophia wasn't bait anymore. She was part of something much bigger. And Kieran was walking directly into the trap.
