Brian’s lifted spirits, thanks to Rico, lasted a few days. A few kids at college, who Brian knew from high school, mentioned he seemed like his old self.
When doing research in the school library for a report, he came across a story about Charlie Sifford, a black golfer who broke the color barrier for blacks way back in 1961 by successfully challenging the Professional Golfers’ Association, the PGA. Brian felt bad that he’d never done anything great like that.
During his next class, the only one he shared with Jim, he left early to use the restroom. As he turned from washing his hands, Robby McNamara grabbed his shirt, turned, and twisted him, throwing him to the floor.
