Chapter 30 Michelle and Dad treated the boys to a day of sightseeing and dinner in San Francisco. They chatted and joked during the one-hour ride north. Brian worked at being upbeat and practiced changing mental channels. When he thought of the war, or of being black or gay, he asked questions on another subject. As they strolled around Fisherman’s Wharf, they witnessed, in the throng of pedestrians, two uniformed soldiers. To Brian’s dismay, a man and woman in their twenties spat on them. The woman shouted, “Baby killers.” The soldiers, only a bit older than Brian and Jim, tried to avoid the attackers and said nothing, walking off.
