Jade's POV
It’s been two days since I had that talk with my dad. I told my dad I needed a couple of days to process the information, so he let me stay home from school. Meanwhile, Megan is blowing up my phone, threatening to come over and break down my room door.
M: B***h, why aren’t you texting me back and why aren’t you at school?
J: I’m not feeling well, I think I caught a cold. We’ll talk later.
I couldn’t tell Megan the truth, and even if I did, I don't think she would believe me. I can hardly believe that weird prophecy my dad told me. I’m the chosen one? Last night, as I soaked in a bath, I closed my eyes and focused on the water. A small part of me was hoping that something would happen. Nothing happened. I didn’t feel anything or feel any different. My dad has to be wrong.
My Aunt Layla is coming today. Dad said that she could answer all of my questions about my powers and my wolf. I’m just happy that she will be around to help me shift on my birthday.
Tonight we are having a family dinner to discuss my upcoming shift and extra security. I’m hoping that will be the opportune time to ask our aunt questions about this prophecy.
I heard a knock on my door.
“Come in.” I yelled.
The door swings open and Jack is standing there. Uh, I thought he would be at school. Maybe he didn’t have classes today.
“Hey Jack, what's up?” I said as I sat up and scooted to the edge of the bed to face him.
“Dad, told me he talked to you about being the chosen one. How are you feeling?”
I slumped back down on my bed.
“I don’t think I'm the chosen one, Jack. Dad made a mistake and we are hiding for nothing. I can’t control the elements or other people. I have no desire to stop wars or cause them. It’s not me.”
I felt a small tear leave my eyes and I quickly wiped it away. In a flash, Jack is sitting next to me and pulls me into a hug. My body stiffens at the sudden contact and then relaxes into his embrace.
“Jade, I know this is hard for you to believe, but you are special. One day you will help our family and we will no longer be hunted for our blood. You're our hero.”
His words caused the floodgates of tears to flow down my face. I would do anything to protect my family. If my powers could help our family come out of hiding and live a normal life, I would do it for them. My brothers could find their mates.
“Thanks Jack for saying that, your the best brother.”
Jack gives me his killer smile, that is only reserved for special occasions. He stands up and starts walking towards the door. “I’m going to the market for dad, do you want anything?” he stops at the doorway and turns to face me.
“I wanna come with you. I’m bored. I’ll be ready in five.”
Jack nods and shuts the door behind him.
I ran to my closet and threw on some black tights and a demon slayer shirt that I think I stole from Jack. I throw my hair into a messy bun, grabbed my phone and wallet and ran down stares.
25 minutes later, we were walking into the downtown market place. Jack is looking over the list that dad gave him. He reads the items out loud,
“Cilantro, bell peppers, onions, chicken, sour cream, cheese. You know if we split this list up it will be faster. You go and get the vegetables: cilantro, bell peppers, and onions. I will go and get the chicken and dairy items and meet you at the register.”
“ OK, meet you at the register.”
I walked over to the produce section. I find onions, cilantro and in the distance I see the bell peppers on display in the front. I grab a small bag to pick a few peppers when I hear a familiar voice,
“Hey Jade.”
My body stiffens as I turn to face the person who called me. I am met with piercing blue eyes of, Devin.
“Hey Devin.”
“You haven’t been to practice, I'm still waiting to see how fast you are,” he said while glancing at the bell pepers in my hand.
“Oh, yeah I have family visiting from out of town and wanted to spend quality time with them.” wow, I thought. That was a great answer.
“That’s cool. Are you here with your boyfriend?”
My face must have contorted into a weird expression because Devin continues,
“I saw you leave with a guy at practice the other day.”
Oh, he must mean James.
“No, that was my older brother James. He was picking me up early to meet my family that are visiting.”
Sh*t, that's another good answer. I'm on a roll.
All of a sudden, I felt another presence standing next to me and I looked to the side to see Jack.
He looked like he was standing at his full height with a serious look on his face. Jack moves and stands in between Devin and I. Turning his back to Devin, he says,
“I have been waiting for you, we need to hurry home.” I ignored his rudeness and faced him.
“Jack, this is Devin. He is on the track team with me.” I saw Jack’s eyes scanning Devin. I turned to Devin and said,
“Devin, this is my brother Jack.”
“Its nice to meet a fellow team mate of Jades, but we really need to get going.” Jack says with finality in his voice. He turns and starts walking towards the registers with me in tow.
Once outside, we quickly load the grocery bags into the SUV and hop in. As we leave the parking lot, Jack says,
“Is that the wolf guy that James told dad about?”
“Yes” I replied.
“Be careful Jade, dad's company monitors all the wolves and supernatural creatures that come to town and that Devin Guy came out of no where. No one knows who he is.”
The ride home was quiet. I was trying to process what Jack said about dad's company monitoring wolves and super naturals that came to town. I didn’t know the company could do that. I guess I don’t know what my dad does.
As we pulled up and got out of the car, I heard the front door of the house open and out walked our beautiful Aunt Layla. My Aunt is a true MILF. She is old but doesn't look a day over 30. She was wearing a long green lace dress. Her brown hair is in one big braid w with colorful ribbions braided inside. She reminds me of a fairy witch, earthy with attitude.
“Aunt Layla, you're here? It's so good to see you”. I'm so excited she is here.
My aunt wraps her arms around me and squeezes me tight.
“ How's my favorite niece?” she says,
“I’m your only niece” I replied. She winks at me and whispers in my ear,
“Your still my favorite.”
“Wow Aunt Layla, I thought I was your favorite.” Jack said from the other side of the car, pretending to pout for her attention. Aunt Layla walks over and grabs Jack into a hug.
“Jack, I changed your dirty diapers and rocked you to sleep as a baby. Your my favorite.” she said with a huge smile on her face.
“Come on kids, let's go inside and catch up on everything. I wanna know about your classes, James. And tell me about the girl that you have been seeing.” my aunt smirks as she enters the front door. Jack’s face is pale and he is just staring at the back of our aunt's head. I'm in shock. Who is Jack seeing I wonder.
