CHAPTER 10 — AWAKENING

The doctor finally gave the family the news they had been praying for. Ellie’s condition was stable. The danger had passed. She only needed time to recover. A wave of relief spread through the hospital corridor. Sarah wiped away her tears, and Mr. Walters gently wrapped an arm around her shoulders. “It’s getting late,” he said softly. “You need to rest.” Sarah looked toward Ellie’s room, reluctant to leave. “I don’t want to leave her.” “You’ll only make yourself sick,” Mr. Walters replied. “The boys will stay with her tonight.” Jayden nodded. “We’ll take care of her.” Ethan agreed silently. Even Darius gave a slight nod. After a long hesitation, Sarah kissed Ellie’s forehead before leaving with her husband. Soon, the hospital became quiet. The bright hallways emptied, and the only sounds that remained were the distant footsteps of nurses and the steady beeping of medical machines. Jayden had fallen asleep on the couch. Ethan rested with his arms folded, his head leaning against the wall. Only Darius remained awake. Sleep refused to come. Something kept pulling him toward Ellie’s room. After a few moments, he quietly stood up and pushed the door open. The room was dimly lit. Ellie lay peacefully on the bed, her face pale but calm. Her injuries were hidden beneath clean bandages. For a long moment, Darius simply stood there. Watching her. His gaze softened in a way he had never allowed before. Slowly, he walked closer. He reached out and gently brushed a strand of hair away from her face before placing his hand against her forehead. Her temperature was normal. He let out a quiet breath. “Why…” he whispered. “Why do I feel this way?” His hand slowly dropped to his side. His heartbeat became strangely unsteady. He placed a hand over his chest as if trying to calm it. The faster it beat… The more confused he became. He had spent days convincing himself that Ellie didn’t belong in his family. So why was the thought of losing her unbearable? Before he could make sense of his emotions… Ellie’s fingers twitched. Her eyelashes fluttered. Slowly, she opened her eyes. The bright ceiling lights blurred above her. She frowned weakly. “Where… am I?” Darius immediately leaned forward. “Ellie?” His voice carried genuine concern. “Can you hear me?” She tried to sit up, but a sharp pain shot through her head. She winced. Darius quickly moved closer and gently supported her shoulders. “Don’t force yourself.” “You’ve been through a lot.” “I’ll call the doctor.” For a brief second, Ellie looked up at him. Their faces were only inches apart. His arm supported her carefully. His calm voice echoed softly in her ears. She could feel the warmth of his touch. The steady rhythm of his breathing. Her own heart betrayed her, beating faster with every passing second. An unexpected thought slipped into her mind. What if… he cared? What if everything he said before was a lie? For one impossible moment, she imagined a different Darius. One who looked at her with kindness. One who protected her. One who loved her. The thought made her cheeks warm despite everything she had been through. Then— The hospital room door opened. The doctor walked in, followed closely by Jayden and Ethan. The fantasy shattered instantly. Ellie blinked and returned to reality. The doctor smiled gently. “Welcome back.” “You gave everyone quite a scare.” Jayden hurried to her bedside, relief evident on his face. “There she is.” He smiled warmly. “Welcome back, Pumpkin.” Ellie looked at him in confusion. Pumpkin? The nickname lingered in her mind, unexpectedly softening the tension in her heart. But then… Everything came rushing back. The classroom. The cruel words. The tears. The fall. Her expression changed. Her eyes slowly found Darius. The warmth she had imagined disappeared. Only pain remained. “What are you doing here?” The room fell silent. Darius didn’t answer. Ellie’s voice trembled. “I don’t want to see you.” She pointed weakly toward the door. “Please…” “Leave.” Everyone froze. Jayden looked between them in confusion. Ethan lowered his head. Darius stood motionless, his face unreadable. After a long silence, he slowly took a step back. Then another. Without saying a single word… He turned around and walked out of the room. The door closed quietly behind him. But the ache he left behind remained. For Ellie… And for himself. The room fell silent after Darius walked out. Ellie stared at the closed door for a moment before looking away. She wasn’t sure what hurt more—the memory of his words or the expression on his face as he left. Just then, Ethan slowly walked toward her bedside. Unlike his usual distant self, his eyes were calm, almost gentle. He reached for her hand and held it carefully, as if afraid she might break. “Ellie…” His voice was softer than she had ever heard it. “I’m sorry.” “For everything.” He lowered his gaze briefly before looking back at her. “How are you feeling now?” Ellie blinked in surprise. She couldn’t believe what she was seeing. Ethan Walters—the quiet, emotionless boy who barely spoke to anyone—was apologizing to her. For a second, she forgot how to answer. Their faces were only a short distance apart. Her heart began to race. “I… I’m okay, I guess,” she stammered, avoiding his eyes. A faint smile appeared on Ethan’s lips. “Thank God.” Without thinking, he leaned forward and gently placed a kiss on her forehead. The gesture lasted only a second. Yet it made Ellie’s entire body freeze. Her heartbeat skipped. Warmth spread across her cheeks until they turned bright red. She stared at him, unable to process what had just happened. Her thoughts wandered for a brief moment, imagining what it would be like if Ethan truly cared for her beyond simple concern. The image lingered in her mind just long enough to make her smile unconsciously. Then— The hospital room door burst open. “Ellie!” Sarah rushed inside, her face stained with tears. The moment she saw her daughter awake, she ran to the bedside and wrapped her in a careful embrace. “Oh, thank goodness,” she cried. “You scared me so much.” Ellie immediately hugged her mother back. “I’m sorry, Mom.” “I didn’t mean to worry you.” Sarah cupped Ellie’s face with trembling hands. “You don’t have to say sorry.” “Just promise me you’ll never leave me like that again.” Ellie’s eyes filled with tears. “I promise.” Standing a few steps away, Jayden watched the reunion with a small smile. Ethan quietly let go of Ellie’s hand and stepped back, returning to his usual reserved expression. No one noticed the faint blush that had crept onto his face. Outside the room… Darius stood silently behind the half-open door. He had returned only to check on Ellie. But what he saw inside made him stop. His eyes lingered on Ethan… Then on Ellie. For reasons he couldn’t explain, a strange feeling settled deep within his chest. One that looked a lot like jealousy. The night passed slowly inside the hospital. None of them truly slept. Sarah stayed by Ellie’s bedside until exhaustion finally caught up with her. Early the next morning, she and Mr. Walters decided to return home briefly to freshen up and bring food and clean clothes for Ellie. “We’ll be back soon,” Sarah said, gently squeezing her daughter’s hand. Ellie nodded weakly. “I’ll be fine, Mom.” After they left, the three brothers remained at the hospital. After Ellie’s mother and Mr Walter’s left for home to change clothes and bring food , the hospital room became much quieter. Darius and Ethan stepped outside leaving Jayden alone with Ellie Ellie shifted uncomfortable in bed “I think I need a shower.” Jayden raised an eyebrow. “Are you sure? You can barely walk.” "I'll manage." "You said that yesterday before ending up in a hospital bed." Ellie rolled her eyes. "Jayden." "Fine, fine. I'll help." Carefully, he helped her out of bed and guided her toward the private bathroom. Once she was inside, he stayed near the door. "Just call if you need anything, Pumpkin." A few minutes passed Then suddenly "Jayden!" His heart nearly stopped. He pushed the door open immediately. "Ellie, are you okay?" Ellie stood near the sink, wrapped securely in a towel, trying to keep her balance. For a moment, Jayden forgot what he was about to say. It wasn't the towel that caught his attention. It was Ellie. For weeks, he had only seen the quiet girl who kept her head down. Standing before him now , vulnerable yet stubbornly determined, she looked different Beautiful. Dangerously beautiful. “Jayden?” Her voice snapped him back to reality. “What?” “Stop staring.” A grin tugged at the corner of his lips. “Sorry.” “You’re staring.” “Can you blame me?” Ellie’s cheeks immediately warmed. “You’re impossible.” Jayden chuckled softly. "That's not what your eyes are saying." Ellie looked away quickly. "Look somewhere else." "Fine." Though he said it casually, his pulse hadn't slowed down. As Ellie tried taking another step, her injured leg suddenly gave way. Before she could fall, Jayden caught her. One arm wrapped around her waist while the other steadied her shoulder. The moment his hand touched her, both of them froze. Neither moved away. Neither seemed capable of it. The hospital suddenly felt too quiet. Too small. Too intimate. Ellie's breath caught in her throat. Jayden swallowed hard "You should sit down," he said quietly. His voice sounded lower than usual. Ellie nodded. Yet neither of them moved immediately. For a brief moment, all they could do was stare at each other. Then reality returned. Jayden carefully guided her to the chair near the sink. "See?" he said with a smirk. "Good thing you called me." Ellie rolled her eyes. But this time, she couldn't stop the smile forming on her lips. Neither of them noticed how much closer they had become. Or how complicated things were about to get. Just then, the bathroom door opened. "Jayden-" Ethan froze. Darius froze. The entire room froze. Jayden stepped back immediately. Ellie wished the ground would swallow her whole. Ethan quickly looked away. Darius's eyes moved from Jayden to Ellie before narrowing slightly. "What exactly is going on in here?" Jayden raised both hands innocently. "Relax She almost fell " Neither Ethan nor Darius looked convinced. And for the first time, Darius felt something twist uncomfortably in his chest. Jealousy. A feeling he had absolutely no intention of admitting.
