CHAPTER 7 — AFTER THE STORM

1186 Words
The classroom felt different when Ellie walked in. Not louder. Not busier. Just… heavier. Every whisper stopped the moment she stepped through the door, and every eye followed her like she was the center of something no one fully understood yet. Ellie kept her head straight and walked to her seat. She refused to look nervous. Refused to look shaken. But she could feel it. Everyone was talking about her. Zoe leaned in quickly as soon as Ellie sat down. “Okay… you’re officially the most talked-about person in school right now.” Ellie sighed. “That’s not a good thing.” Amara, sitting on the other side, shook her head. “It depends on how you see it.” Ellie gave her a tired look. “I see it as stress.” Zoe lowered her voice. “The Queen Bees don’t let things go easily. Especially Tyla.” Ellie paused slightly. “So what? She’s going to cry about it?” Amara laughed nervously. “You don’t understand. Tyla, Mandy, and Lia run this school. Their families donate a lot of money. Even teachers avoid them.” Ellie leaned back in her chair. “Then maybe it’s time someone stopped them.” Zoe and Amara exchanged a look. “You already did,” Zoe whispered. Across the campus, in a private lounge area, Tyla sat surrounded by Mandy and Lia. Her cheek was still slightly red. And her mood was worse. She tapped her fingers on the table angrily. “I want her gone,” Tyla said coldly. Mandy leaned forward. “She embarrassed us in front of everyone.” Lia crossed her arms. “And Darius stopped you.” Tyla’s eyes narrowed at that name. “He will regret that.” A silence followed. Then she smiled faintly. “But not immediately.” Mandy tilted her head. “What are you planning?” Tyla leaned back slowly. “Let’s make her first week unforgettable.” The teacher entered the classroom, breaking the tension. “Settle down everyone.” But no one was really listening. Not anymore. Every student was waiting for Ellie’s next move. Even Jayden. Even Ethan. And especially Darius. ⸻ Jayden glanced at Ellie from across the room. A lazy smile formed on his lips. “You’re really not normal, are you?” he muttered. Ellie didn’t look at him. “I’ve been told worse.” That made him chuckle softly. ⸻ Ethan, sitting near the window, finally looked up. For a second. Just one second. Then looked away again. But it was enough. ⸻ And Darius… He didn’t say anything at all. But his eyes stayed on Ellie longer than necessary before he finally turned away. ⸻ 💭 ELLIE’S THOUGHTS Ellie stared at the board, trying to focus. But her mind wasn’t calm. The cafeteria. The slap. The stares. The silence afterward. Everything replayed in her head. She didn’t regret defending herself. But she knew one thing for sure… This wasn’t over. Not with Tyla. Not with this school. And definitely not with the Walters brothers watching her every move. The final bell echoed through the halls, signaling the end of the school day. Students poured out of their classrooms, filling the corridors with laughter and conversation as they made their way home. Ellie stood near the front entrance with Zoe and Amara. “I guess this is where we say goodbye,” Zoe said with a smile. “We’ll see you tomorrow,” Amara added, pulling Ellie into a quick hug. Ellie smiled warmly. “See you both tomorrow.” As the two girls disappeared into the crowd, Ellie looked toward the parking lot. The Walters family’s cars were already waiting outside. She glanced around, expecting to see Jayden and Ethan. Nothing. They were nowhere in sight. She checked the time on her phone and sighed. “They’re probably waiting for Darius.” Remembering that he was in his final year and attended classes in a different building, Ellie decided to look for him. The afternoon sun cast long shadows across the campus as she walked through the quiet corridors. The senior building was almost empty. Only a few classrooms remained occupied. As she approached one of them, voices drifted through the slightly open door. She slowed her steps. Not intentionally to listen… But one familiar name made her stop. “Haven’t you noticed?” one of the boys inside asked with a chuckle. “That new girl has been following you around all day.” A few laughs followed. Then another voice spoke. “So tell us, Darius… how exactly did she become your sister?” For a brief moment, there was silence. Ellie unconsciously moved closer to the doorway. Then Darius answered. His voice was calm. Cold. Emotionless. “I think it’s obvious.” “They were looking for a way out of poverty.” A few boys laughed quietly. “My father has more money than most people could dream of.” “So her mother married him.” He paused before continuing. “And I highly doubt it was for love.” His words landed like stones. “I believe she’s here because of his wealth.” “And one day, I’ll prove it.” The laughter inside the classroom faded. Darius’s voice remained steady. “I refuse to believe any of this happened by chance.” “My father may trust them…” “But I don’t.” Another student folded his arms. “So you’ll never accept her as family?” Darius didn’t hesitate. “No.” His answer came without emotion. “I could never accept someone from that background as my sister.” Outside the classroom, Ellie felt her breath catch. The world around her suddenly seemed distant. The hallway blurred. Her chest tightened. Every word replayed in her mind. They were looking for a way out of poverty. She’s here because of his wealth. I could never accept her as my sister. She hadn’t realized tears had gathered in her eyes until she blinked. Unable to move, she stood frozen outside the doorway. Then… Someone inside looked toward the entrance. Darius. His eyes met hers. For the first time that day, surprise flickered across his face. The conversation inside the classroom stopped instantly. Every student turned toward the door. Ellie stood there silently, her face pale, her heart pounding against her chest. She wanted to speak. She wanted to defend herself. She wanted to tell him how wrong he was. But no words came. Only silence. Darius rose slowly from his seat. Neither of them looked away. The distance between them was only a few steps… Yet it had never felt so impossible to cross. And in that single moment, Ellie realized something she had been refusing to accept since arriving at the Walters Mansion. No matter what happened… No matter how hard she tried… There were some walls that money, kindness, and hope could never break. Without saying a single word, she turned around. And walked away. Leaving Darius standing in the doorway… Watching her disappear down the empty hallway.
