Chapter 6

“Are you out of your mind?” Wendy exclaimed. “Why did you let him take her? Do you want the other members of the pack to think that you aren’t a man of your word?” Her eyes blazed with anger.
I let out a sharp exhale.
“Wend…..”
She cut me off before I could complete my sentence. “You’re giving her a free pass for murder.” She continued, staring at me in shock. “Now other people would think that it’s cool to commit murder because there’s a possibility of getting away with it.”
I understood Wendy’s concerns but my mind was racing with different thoughts and I needed her to chill.
Just as she opened her mouth to speak again, I interrupted her. “Enough!” My thunderous voice made her flinch. “Can you just stop talking for a second?” I asked, my tone softer.
She shook her head. “I don’t know if you’re under a spell. But I’m not.” She said, folding her arms around her chest. “If you’re not going to do something, I’ll be the one to stop them.”
Wendy had always been stubborn. I knew that she wouldn’t listen to me, but I still had to warn her. “Don’t do anything stupid, just let them go.”
“As your future Luna, I have to step in when you’re being weak.” She seethed angrily. “If you won’t protect the pack, I will.” She added before storming out angrily.
I didn’t try to stop her because I knew her mission was going to be fruitless. I knew Sean wouldn’t even give her a chance to stop him.
She didn’t stand a chance against a powerful Lycan king.
After she left, I let out a deep sigh and made my way back to the house. I didn’t miss the hushed whispers and side talks as I passed some of the pack members.
They weren’t happy that I let Zoey leave with the Lycan king. But if there was a chance that a real killer was out there, I wanted to give it a shot.
But I was still confused.
How were they mates? I needed an explanation.
As I got back to the house, I stopped at my father’s room. I wanted answers. I had never seen someone find another mate on the same day they were rejected.
“Hey.” My father’s weak voice echoed through the room.
He was sick, so most times, he was confined to the bed.
“How are you doing?” I asked, sitting down beside him.
After exchanging pleasantries, I explained the entire situation to him. By the time I was done, he gasped in disbelief.
“And you allowed her to leave? What if it’s some sick prank just so she would escape her punishment?” He asked with a hint of disappointment in his voice.
It crossed my mind for a second, but I brushed off those thoughts. Zoey didn’t have that kind of connection to a powerful Lycan king.
She also looked surprised when he arrived and my guts didn’t feel like it was a prank. Sean wouldn’t waste his time on a prank.
Plus, he also promised to help find the real killer in two weeks.
“I’m not concerned about that part. I just want to know…Is it possible? Can a wolf bond with someone else the same day they’ve been rejected?” I muttered, my mind racing with different thoughts.
My father said nothing. He just studied me for a long beat.
“I haven’t seen anything like that.” He finally responded. “But that shouldn’t be your concern. You rejected the girl, didn’t you?”
I nodded. “Yes, I did.”
“So why are you worried about her new mate? You should only try to find out if it’s just an elaborate plan to fool you.” He added, his voice sharp.
Pinching the bridge of my nose, I let out a deep exhale. I didn’t reject Zoey because I didn’t like her anymore. It was just something I had to do when I found out that she murdered Ethan.
Now I wasn’t so sure about it anymore.
Zoey didn’t have it in her to kill the Beta. She might have been framed. I didn’t want to believe her at first because I needed someone to blame for my best friend’s death.
But in two weeks, I’ll know if Sean was just messing with me, or if Zoey was actually framed. Anyway, I didn’t want to admit it, but it made me feel somehow knowing that Zoey was with another man.
I felt a little bit jealous.
I was already starting to warm up to Zoey. Even if I acted like I was ruthless, I still had feelings. I couldn’t handle Zoey being with someone else.
And if she turns out to be innocent, I would feel guilty for the rest of my life. I wasn’t sure she would even want to get back together with me after I had publicly humiliated her.
“You still care about her.” My father’s voice cut through the quiet room.
He had been watching me silently as I struggled with my thoughts.
I didn’t say anything.
“What about Wendy?” He asked, his eyes fixed on me. “Aren’t you making her your Luna now that Zoey isn’t in the picture anymore?”
Wendy?
I know that promised to make her my Luna, but I had other things to focus on. I still needed to start my own investigation concerning Ethan’s death.
It wasn’t the right time to claim another woman.
“I’m not sure about my feelings for Wendy anymore,” I admitted, my voice low. “I don’t want to hurt her, so I don’t want to let her down.”
My father let out a sigh. “You know how fierce and unhinged Wendy can be? Don’t lead her on if you don’t have solid plans for her.” He advised.
I forced a smile. “Yes, thank you,” I said, rubbing my head.
My father was right.
I shouldn’t lead Wendy on if I wasn’t interested in making her my Luna. But I had bigger problems to solve.
So if crowning her will keep the pack calm, then so be it.
