Ethan Chen, a scion of the powerful Chen family...
Many years ago, Ethan's father was wrongly accused of stealing the family's most valuable treasure, leading to his exile.
The Chen family pursued both Ethan and his father, but later, Ethan's father died saving Marcus Blackwell's life.
Fearing that Ethan would be left vulnerable and reclaimed by the powerful Chen family, Ethan's father entrusted him to Marcus.
As a birthright member of the Chen bloodline, Ethan was placed under a Mystical Seal on his right hand at birth. Once the seal was broken, he would gain access to the Chen family's traditional medical knowledge.
During his three years as an outcast son-in-law, Ethan was neither idle nor unambitious; he spent every waking moment obsessively trying to figure out how to break the seal.
Sadly, his efforts were invisible to everyone else.
Now that the seal was finally broken, he could straighten out his life's most pressing goal: returning to the Chen family and clearing his father's name—proving he had not stolen the family treasure.
"Phew!" Ethan let out a long breath of relief. Time to go! He immediately headed to his car, driving toward Metropolitan General Hospital, where Lily worked.
Metropolitan General was one of the city's most prestigious Tier-One hospitals, a facility countless medical graduates desperately sought to intern at, though its entry conditions were famously stringent.
Ethan parked his car in front of the hospital, put on his sunglasses, and confidently walked inside, taking a seat in the main reception lobby to wait for Lily to clock out.
Just then, a noisy commotion erupted from the upper floor.
"What a quack! When they can't solve a problem, they tell us to transfer out. What about the tens of thousands of dollars in hospital fees we’ve already paid? Are you going to refund us?"
"A surgeon in her twenties with absolutely no skill manages to get such a high-level position. I don't believe you if you say you haven't slept with the hospital bigwigs!"
"You b***h! If you don't give us an explanation today, you’re not leaving this building!"
A group of aggressive people had cornered a young doctor, yelling insults and even shoving her.
"We have done our best. Metropolitan General has limited medical resources for this specific case. You must arrange a transfer to a larger specialist center immediately," the young doctor explained.
That voice sounds familiar.
Ethan looked in the direction of the noise and was stunned to find that the beleaguered doctor was none other than his wife, Lily Blackwell.
Lily had a sharp, neat bob, but her face was pale and drawn from prolonged work, and her eyes were full of exhaustion—a sight that tore at his heart.
She wore a loose white lab coat, yet it couldn't hide her proud figure.
"You filthy b***h, you make it sound so easy! If your hospital couldn't handle it, you should have said so sooner! Now we’ve wasted over fifty thousand dollars in fees, and you casually suggest a transfer? Are we just supposed to forget our money?" A huge, burly man in the crowd roared, raising his hand to strike Lily across the face.
Snap!
In the critical moment, Ethan surged forward, grabbing the man's wrist. "Why can't we talk this out? Why resort to violence?"
"Ethan? What are you doing here?" Lily was slightly taken aback, her face registering surprise.
She knew Ethan too well. For three years, he had never stood up or spoken out for her, always cowardly and passive. Today, he was surprisingly intervening.
"Honey, I'm here to pick you up," Ethan replied, already accustomed to Lily using his first name instead of "husband."
"Oh, so they’re a married couple! He's here to protect his own! Well, listen up, mister: you either refund our money or heal my uncle, or neither of you is leaving this building!" The burly man finished speaking, and his relatives glared menacingly at Ethan and Lily.
This public spectacle in the bustling hospital lobby attracted a large crowd. People started pointing at Lily and whispering amongst themselves.
"Ignore him, let's go!" Lily was usually cold and reserved, not one for idle talk.
Feeling guilty about the patient, she had endured the insults and tried to offer further explanations.
But the patient’s family's behavior was completely outrageous.
"You b***h, you're not going anywhere until you solve this problem!" the burly man shouted, about to swing again.
"Hit someone? Go on, I'm standing right here! Hit me if you dare!"
Hearing Lily repeatedly called a "stinking b***h" finally ignited Ethan's fury. He pointed to his own cheek.
"You think I wouldn't dare?" The burly man glared and swung his hand toward Lily's cheek.
A slender doctor versus a huge man—that slap would surely leave her face swollen.
Lily didn't flinch or dodge, simply staring at the man.
Forget it, you might not care for yourself, but I care about my wife!
Ethan moved swiftly, stepping in front of Lily and grasping the burly man’s wrist with lightning speed.
This time, Ethan wasn't just grabbing him; as punishment for the continuous insults, Ethan pressed his thumb hard into a sensitive nerve junction on the man's wrist.
It wouldn't cause lasting harm, just render the man's arm useless for a week.
"Ouch! He struck me! The surgeon's husband publicly assaulted a patient's family member! Is there no law left?"
Seeing this, the relatives next to the burly man began to wail loudly, ensuring everyone in the hospital could hear them.
Lily’s face darkened, her fists clenched so tightly her knuckles cracked, but she forced herself to suppress her temper.
"The whole hospital is covered by CCTV! Don't you dare slander my wife!" Ethan said angrily.
"Ignore these unreasonable people!" Lily said impatiently.
Lily deliberately tried to bypass them, but they followed her every step, blocking her exit.
The hospital lobby was becoming more and more crowded, everyone focused on Lily's predicament.
A lie repeated a thousand times becomes the truth. Soon, whispers of Lily sleeping her way to the top started circulating among the onlookers.
"Honey, let me try again." Ethan knew that if this situation wasn't resolved completely today, Lily wouldn't be able to leave the hospital peacefully.
And even if they escaped today, this group would return tomorrow and the day after, continuing to cause trouble.
Lily ignored Ethan.
"Even if it’s just for show, you have to satisfy them temporarily. Otherwise, they'll harass you here every day. How will you work?" Ethan advised.
Although Metropolitan General was highly reputable locally, it was still a regional facility with limitations. Many difficult and serious illnesses required transfer to larger, specialized medical centers.
Lily remained silent for a long moment, then looked at the crowd of patient's relatives and said solemnly, "Alright, I will attempt to treat him one more time, but you must still be prepared for a transfer."
