Under the watchful eyes of the patient's family members, Lily Blackwell reluctantly went upstairs and ushered the patient into a treatment room.
Even if it was just for show, Lily injected the patient with an initial stabilizing dose, followed by a local anesthetic.
"His axillary tumor is extremely close to the main axillary nerve. Our hospital lacks the necessary advanced laser surgical equipment," Lily explained, shaking her head. "No one here dares to risk using a scalpel."
Ethan leaned closer. The patient was a middle-aged man with a tumor the size of a large fist lodged under his left armpit.
Ethan’s eyes narrowed slightly, and a flash of purple light—imperceptible to Lily—flickered in his dark pupils. The next second, Ethan’s vision pierced straight through the skin, allowing him to see the precise condition of the area beneath the patient's armpit.
Just as Lily had stated, the tumor was dangerously close to a major nerve cluster. Without the specialized surgical equipment, even a minute deviation of a single millimeter could sever the nerve.
Severing that nerve could result in permanent numbness or complete loss of sensation and function in the patient’s arm.
"This case was supposed to be handled by Chief Surgeon Dr. Reynolds," Lily fumed, the thought infuriating her. "But he deliberately pushed it onto me just so I would take the blame for him!"
As they say, the lowest rank always pays the price. Dr. Reynolds wanted to shift the responsibility, and she was forced to accept it.
"Honey, don't worry, there's a way to fix this," Ethan said confidently, reaching for a scalpel near the patient.
"Are you insane?! What do you think you're doing?" Lily was startled to see him take the surgical tool.
Married for three years, she had never known Ethan to possess any medical training. He was certainly not qualified to perform surgery.
If the surgery harmed the patient, she would bear the full legal and professional responsibility!
"Wife, just give me half an hour, that’s all I need," Ethan insisted, his tone utterly serious.
Next, Ethan began disinfecting the patient's armpit, preparing for the procedure.
"Ethan, stop right there!" Lily's face hardened, her usual cold expression returning instantly.
When the patient's family first cornered Lily, she subconsciously saw Ethan's arrival as a source of support, which slightly softened her attitude.
But after seeing this insane move, Lily realized that Ethan was still the same unreliable man.
"You don't understand anything! Don't make things worse!" Lily snapped, snatching the scalpel out of Ethan's hand.
"Wife..." Ethan tried to explain further, but Lily cut him off, taking charge. "You shut up! I don't blame you for being incompetent, but don't add insult to injury!
Ethan countered, "Honey, don't worry, nothing will go wrong. And even if something does, I'll take full responsibility!"
A look of intense disgust instantly flashed across Lily's face. "This patient is under my care! If anything happens, the hospital and the family will blame me! How can you take responsibility? Can you afford the lawsuits and the ruined career?"
"Thank you for standing up for me earlier, but I'm truly stressed right now. Please don't add to my problems! Just go back to doing whatever you're good at—being subservient, living an easy life, and waiting to inherit money!"
In her fury, Lily spoke rapidly, blurting out all the bitterness she had harbored for years.
She deeply regretted it. She should have resisted Marcus then and refused to marry that good-for-nothing Ethan, even if it meant a family confrontation.
To outsiders, Lily Blackwell was a strong, capable woman who could overcome any challenge.
But when facing difficulties, she also longed for a shoulder to lean on. Instead, she had only a useless husband.
She often avoided taking Ethan to social functions for fear of being ridiculed by her peers.
Ethan wanted to explain, but the deep impression he had left over the last three years was too solid; any explanation now would seem weak and futile.
He sighed inwardly, stung by Lily's brutal honesty.
But what must be done, must be done!
Ethan walked up to Lily, his two fingers pointing forward, settled, and deftly took the scalpel from her hand.
Lily tried to stop him, tried to yell, but found she couldn't move. She couldn't even make a sound. She could only glare fiercely at Ethan.
What did you do to me?!
Lily screamed in her heart, shocked and furious. In three years, she never realized Ethan possessed such a terrifying ability!
"Wife, I'm not the Ethan you used to know," he said with an ambiguous meaning. After one final disinfection, he carefully made a small incision under the patient's armpit.
Stop! Stop right there!
Lily desperately tried to shout, but her throat felt blocked. She could only watch helplessly as Ethan prepared to operate right before her eyes.
A deep sense of regret welled up in Lily's heart. She shouldn't have listened to Ethan at the entrance. Otherwise, none of this would have happened.
Since she couldn't stop him, Lily simply closed her eyes, her heart turning to ash. She prepared to face the inevitable fallout.
At the same time, she secretly made a decision: even if it meant a huge fight with Marcus, the moment they returned home, she would demand a divorce from Ethan.
"No wonder no one dared to touch this..." Ethan muttered to himself, secretly shocked. The tumor under the patient's armpit had begun to fester internally. If the infection spread, it would be far more serious than just the loss of an arm.
"Phew!" Ethan took a few deep breaths. With the Mystical Seal broken, he had awakened the Chen family's inherited medical knowledge. He already knew the solution, but this was his first practical treatment, and he was naturally nervous.
He began the cut. This was the "Aura Conduit Drainage"—one of the techniques from the Chen family's traditional medical arts.
With a sudden focus of his right hand, a wisp of pure Aura surged from his activated Mystical Mark (the area known as the ‘tiger’s mouth’) into the patient's armpit.
Since the energy stored in his mark had only just been unlocked, the supply was limited. Sweat beaded instantly on Ethan's brow.
The Aura adhered to the tumor, slowly dissolving it like acid.
The tumor didn't shrink; instead, it changed from a solid mass into a liquid, black, putrid abscess that began to ooze out through Ethan's small incision.
The black pus carried a repulsive, foul stench that filled the small treatment room.
You cut open the patient's tumor! The infection will spread and kill him!
Lily was frantic, her eyes wide with terror, wishing she could tear Ethan apart.
"Almost there!" Sweat increased on Ethan's forehead, and his expression became one of extreme concentration.
The tumor was almost entirely drained, but his Aura was completely consumed.
He only had one option left to drain the final residue: to use his own life force to replenish the Aura. Ethan’s father had used a similar method to save Marcus's life, sacrificing his own vitality in the process.
Fortunately, Ethan didn't need to go that far.
Finally, the last bit of black pus flowed out. Ethan let out a long sigh of relief. "Wife, the wound closure... you're better at that. You should do it."
Ethan put down the scalpel and released Lily from the supernatural paralysis.
Snap!
The moment her body regained control, Lily didn't say a single word. She slapped Ethan hard across the cheek, the sound loud and sharp, leaving a distinct red handprint on his face.
