Chapter 4: Dr. Reynolds

The slap stunned Ethan Chen momentarily. He stared blankly at Lily Blackwell. "Wife, I healed him for you. Why did you hit me?" "If you truly cured him, I..." Lily began, walking toward the operating table. But the sentence stopped abruptly because she could clearly see it: the tumor under the patient's armpit was gone! It hadn't been removed—it had simply vanished! In normal tumor surgery, the mass would be extracted, but Lily had witnessed the entire process and hadn't seen Ethan remove anything. Why did the tumor disappear? Did he... eat it? A bizarre and nonsensical thought flashed through Lily's mind. Obviously, that was impossible, yet there was no other rational explanation for the tumor's absence. After a moment of shock, Lily quickly attended to closing the patient's small incision. After a long silence, Lily turned to look at Ethan, asking incredulously, "Ethan... How did you do that?" "I cured your patient. Shouldn't you be thanking me instead of hitting me?" Ethan feigned indignation. "So, what do you want?" Lily paused. He did have a point. Her tone softened slightly. Upon hearing this, Ethan burst into a shameless laugh and leaned closer to Lily's side. "Wife, we've been married for three years; shouldn't your belly be getting a little bigger? People are spreading rumors that I'm impotent. You need to help prove them wrong!" Lily's face darkened. She raised her hand to slap Ethan again. "You're pushing your luck!" "Just kidding, just kidding!" Ethan sensed the danger and immediately backed away from Lily. Next, Lily and Ethan wheeled the patient out of the treatment room. The moment they stepped out, the group of patients' family members surged forward, completely surrounding them. "How is he? How is my uncle?" the family members asked anxiously. "The procedure was a success," Ethan answered. "With proper care, the patient can be discharged after a short period of recovery." "A miracle! A miracle doctor! Hurry up and thank the miracle doctor!" Upon hearing the patient was cured, the tone of the family members changed drastically. The group was so overcome with emotion that they nearly knelt down and kowtowed in public before Ethan. "It wasn't my doing. If you want to thank someone," Ethan said with a slight smile, pointing to Lily standing next to him. "Dr. Blackwell, we were terribly wrong earlier. We apologize! We are so sorry!" The burly man took the lead in admitting his mistake, and the other family members’ attitudes toward Lily instantly improved. They had just been shouting, threatening, and slandering Lily, yet she had put aside their maliciousness and cured their relative. This realization filled them with immense guilt and remorse. Lily was stunned for a moment. She hadn't actually done anything—she had only closed the wound. Lily instinctively wanted to explain, but the overwhelming gratitude and enthusiasm of the family members gave her no chance to clarify. After moving the patient to a recovery ward, Ethan instructed them, "From now on, if there are any issues, sit down and discuss them properly. Don't cause a chaotic scene like this again. Understand?" "Yes, yes, yes. We were completely in the wrong. We owe Dr. Blackwell an apology," the family replied sheepishly. "Good." Ethan nodded in satisfaction, then took Lily's hand and walked out of the hospital wing. "Let go of me!" Lily glared fiercely, pulling her hand away. Problem solved. Lily felt relieved. But just as the two reached the hospital entrance, they spotted a middle-aged man in a white coat. He was holding a thermos and had a long, pointed face with a black mole beneath his cheek—resembling an unpleasant caricature. "Dr. Blackwell, is there something you need?" Lily's pleasant demeanor vanished the moment she saw him. Chief Surgeon Dr. Reynolds chuckled and pretended to be sympathetic. "Dr. Blackwell, I heard that the patient's family was quite rough with you, saying some awful things? The family was just worried; please don't take it to heart." "But then again, if that procedure hadn't been done, the family would keep making a scene. Things would become complicated. If this mess reached the Chief Administrator, it could be quite troublesome." "The procedure is already complete, Dr. Reynolds, no need for you to trouble yourself," Lily said coldly. Earlier in the year, Dr. Reynolds had solicited bribes from a patient's family, which Lily discovered and reported to the hospital administration. Dr. Reynolds was publicly reprimanded and humiliated. Since then, he had seized every opportunity to make trouble for Lily, clearly intending to drive her out of the hospital. "Complete? How is that possible?" Dr. Reynolds looked utterly disbelieving. Without the specialized equipment, none of the surgeons in the entire hospital would attempt that procedure. How could Lily possibly have done it? "If you don't believe me, go check the ward yourself!" Lily said, seeing the disappointment on Reynolds' face. "Wife, let's go." Ethan steered Lily toward the car. In truth, the Blackwell family was immensely wealthy and powerful; Lily didn't need to work at the hospital at all. She could take over from Marcus as head of the family's main corporation in a few years. But Lily insisted on hiding her true identity and working at Metropolitan General as an ordinary surgeon. Ethan still couldn't understand why. The two sat in the car and headed toward the Blackwell manor. Ding-dong! Suddenly, Lily's phone received a text message. Lily pulled out her phone, glanced at the screen, and immediately flipped it over, simultaneously using her peripheral vision to check Ethan, as if she was afraid he would see the message. "Who sent that?" Ethan inquired. Lily remained aloof as always, refusing to offer any explanation. Seeing her reaction, Ethan didn't press the matter. After they arrived at the Blackwell manor, Ethan parked the car in the garage. He was surprised to see a black BMW parked outside the main entrance. He clearly remembered that the Blackwell family owned a Cayenne, a Porsche, a Land Rover, and a Jaguar, but no BMW. The Blackwells have a visitor! Ethan's first instinct was to walk into the living room. Following his lead, Lily walked in to find four people sitting there: three women—Lily herself, Daisy Blackwell, and Susan Blackwell—and one man. As for the man in the suit and tie, Ethan took a closer look and was taken aback. "Ken Riley! What is he doing here?" Recalling the earlier confrontation that afternoon, Ethan instantly understood. Susan had failed to convince Marcus to arrange a divorce and was now definitely trying to push Lily toward divorcing him by introducing Ken Riley as a better option. "Aunt Susan, you look even more beautiful! I asked a friend to purchase this exclusive sunscreen for you abroad. This product is sure to suit you," Ken Riley said. He wore rimless glasses, was handsome and looked very sophisticated. "You shouldn't have gone to the trouble of bringing a gift," Susan said, taking the gift from his hand with pleasure. The three sat on the sofa. Ken Riley's eyes kept returning to Lily, but Lily appeared indifferent to his presence. "Lily, besides wanting to see you, there is another very important matter I wanted to discuss," Ken Riley said. "My grandfather is getting old and lately has found the hassle of going to the hospital unbearable. I was hoping you might be willing to come and give him a private consultation."
