CHAPTER FOUR
Frances and Nancy had been invited to a party at Max's given to celebrate the successful month at Mr. Marcus' lounge. They took a taxi directly from the Fireside Hotel.
Jack met them at the door and took their coats.
“Where's Susan?” Nancy asked Jack.
“Oh, she'll not not be coming,” he answered vaguely and brought the girls two prepared drinks.
Max came into the room then and congratulated them profusely on the success of the combo.
Frances objected, “It seems Susan is the one to thank. Why isn't she here?”
The two men looked at each other briefly before Max mumbled something about Susan being too tired that evening. Then he continued telling the twins how good they were and how it was planned to use them in a special act starting the following week.
