Raven's POV
The Harley was actually dying beneath me.
I could feel it in the way the engine sputtered weakly, making this pathetic cough like sound, the kind a machine does whenever it's ready to give up on life.
The highway ahead stretched like a black tongue that literally swallowed everything in its path. I was doing an eighty, seriously praying to whatever goddess who listened to girls like me that I would be able to make it to the next exit before the bike finally decided to quit entirely.
The wind suddenly whipped my hair into a frenzy, stinging my face and from where I had bitten down too hard on my bottom lip half an hour ago, I could taste copper.
Then suddenly, the headlights appeared behind me.
Not one, not two, not three, not even twenty. More than fifty f*****g headlights.
Before I even looked in my cracked mirror, I already knew who they were.
That sick rumble of those engines was pounding in my chest like a second heartbeat, synced and aggressive, a sound that loudly said ‘we own this road and everything on it’.
Hellhound Choppers. Chrome beasts with skull decals and exhaust pipes so loud it could actually wake the dead.
My Harley gave one last death rattle and finally coasted to a stop right in the middle of the pitch black highway. I felt like ripping my hair off my skull, perfect timing…absolutely f*****g perfect timing.
I was surrounded by Dante's men in seconds. They formed a cage of metal and blinding light, enemies revving so loud I couldn't even hear my own f*****g thoughts.
I sighed deeply, then scanned the bikes around me, almost fifty massive bikes ridden by men who looked as though they ate nails and blood for breakfast every day. The strong stench of gasoline and ozone filled up my nostrils, mixed with something toxic underneath.
Pure Alpha arrogance.
Dante Hawke stepped of his custom chopper as though he had all the f*****g time in the world.
He was huge, built like a goddamn brick wall with arms covered in tattoos that told stories I never cared to read. His leather cut hung off his shoulders, the president patch bold and mocking.
But it wasn't his size that made my wolf actually react beneath my skin, all suppressed and desperate, no, it was his smile.
That hollow, dead, cold smile that said he has already decided how this night was going to end without having to say anything through his mouth.
He dragged a rusted logging chain behind him, the metallic scraping of the knife at the end chain against the asphalt echoed loud in the dead silence and I could feel every scrape in my bones.
“Chain the Nomad b***h to the exhaust” Dante growled, his voice calm and casual as though he was ordering his regular morning coffee. “We are dragging her back to camp alive…and I want to hear her scream for every mile”
His men burst into laughter…like…full-on hysterical laughter.
I had nothing but Nomad cunning and human grit.
Thanks to my father for poisoning my meals with wolfsbane for years which had killed my wolf's strength, and left me weak in ways that made me want to collapse and yell at the top of my lungs.
But Nomad girls never screamed. We fought back and tried to survive even the harshest situations.
I cracked my neck, then kicked the broken fuel line of my already dead Harley. Gasoline quietly seeped through the crack, pooling over the hot asphalt like a dangerous secret.
Then, I dropped my silver hunting knife and fell to my knees, my head lowered, arms raised above my head.
“Pl…please” I coughed, trying to sound as pathetic as possible. “I…I'm done fighting”
Dante Hawke's smile widened as he began taking slow steps toward me, savoring every second, the chain still dragging noisy behind him.
“Boys! Look at the feral dog now!” He mocked, loud enough for his men to hear as he stopped right in front of me. “Hold the b***h down…” he then leaned in closer until I could feel the stench of his rotting breath. “... I'm leashing this one myself”
His top enforcer snickered, then grabbed my arm from behind.
Big f*****g mistake.
My fake fear melted off almost immediately, replaced by a wild, feral grin. I pulled my metal Zippo from my pocket, the flame sparking to life almost immediately just as I kicked the enforcer's knees backward.
The loud crunch of bone was satisfying and sickening all at once. Then, I dropped the lighter into the gasoline.
The explosion was so beautiful I could f*****g cry.
My dead Harley blew apart, a wall of literal hellfire and thick black smoke that erupted into the night sky.
The shockwave from the explosion threw bodies backward, men screaming like twinks, bikes toppling. And in the chaos, I lunged forward. I picked up my silver blade and slashed it across Dante's chest, cutting through leather and flesh , and I then ripped the President patch clean off his cut.
Then, I was on his chopper, the engine was still idling, and I gunned it almost immediately.
Flames licked at my legs as I tore through the tiny gap in their perimeter. Behind me, Dante lunged into the fire.
I could see him in the mirror, saw as he gripped the blazing hot exhaust pipe of his own bike with his bare hands, dragging himself up just enough to look me in the f*****g eye while his flesh literally roasted.
“Ride faster, little Nomad b***h!” He roared over the engine, his eyes completely feral and homicidal. “Because when I find you again, I'm going to peel your f*****g skin from your bones and make your Alpha choke on it!”
He finally let go, laughing like a maniac.
I ignored him, tearing down the dark highway of his stolen bike, my heart slamming crazily against my ribs.
Route 66 stretched ahead, black and empty and I pushed the chopper even faster. Ninety…a hundred. The wind screamed, and so did I.
But when I hit the canyon curve, the highway was blocked.
Kai stood in the center with more than a dozen Ironwolves behind him, tightly gripping a steel pipe as though he was ready to die. His headlights were blinding and I could see his face…Broken, hollow and ready to attack whoever was sitting on his enemy's chopper.
I slammed the brake and then killed the engine.
Kai dropped the steel pipe the moment he saw it was me. It clattered loudly against the asphalt. He looked like a dead man walking, his human eyes blown wide as he stared at my bruised face and the enemy bike beneath me.
“Did…did you just…” Kai breathed, his voice cracked and completely wrecked as he took a desperate step toward me like a puppy that just saw its master after a long time.
I didn't wait for him to start acting as though he owned me.
I swung off the bike in one swift motion, limping right up to the terrifying Alpha President, and slapped the bloody leather Hellhound patch I had ripped off Dante against his massive chest.
“I brought you a present.” I panted, swiping blood fast from my split lip as I stared him down. “Now stop looking at me like some fragile maiden. I know you lost a mate, but unfortunately I'm not her, I'm not breakable. And I sure as hell don't need a babysitter”
I spun around immediately, grabbed the handlebars and swung my leg back over Dante's stolen chopper to zoom off wherever the wind would take me.
Kai's jaw locked. Before I could touch the throttle, he closed the distance, slapping his hand down and violently turning the key to kill the ignition.
“Back off!” I snarled, shoving both hands against his chest.
He didn't budge. His massive hands clamped around my waist, lifting my entire body off the bike and setting my boots on the asphalt. I shoved past his shoulder to walk away on foot.
I made it two steps.
A sudden, sickening warmth dripped down my side, soaking through my ripped tank top. I froze, my hand dropping to my ribs. When I pulled my fingers back, they were coated in dark, thick blood.
Dante hadn't just grabbed the exhaust pipe in the smoke.
He had slashed me open.
The adrenaline melted off, leaving blinding, agonizing fire. The dark highway spun violently. My knees buckled, the asphalt rushing up to meet me.
I didn't hit the ground.
Kai caught me, his desperate, feral roar tearing through the canyon as my blood pooled over his heavy boots and my eyes rolled back, plunging everything into absolute, terrifying darkness.
