Chapter 10 The photographs and the hammer were still hidden behind my back. I fixed my eyes on Lacroix and let out a deep breath. As the sun set behind him, he stood in my doorway like a model posing in a photographer’s studio. Dressed in his RCMP uniform, he looked a knight in shiny armour. “Is something wrong? Is it Zoë?” “No. What the hell is going on?” he demanded in a deep, resonating voice. “I—uh.” “What’s wrong?” He looked genuinely concerned. “Nothing. I’m—I’m fine.” “You don’t look fine.” There was a table to my left behind the door. I smiled shyly. How could I deposit the hammer there without making any noise?
