Chapter 22
The noise was indescribable. The impact caused a knee-jerk reaction that vibrated through my entire body. I’m sure I stopped breathing for a moment.
I don’t remember ever being so alone.
Even though I’d been brought up on the stories of the departed leaving one body to enter another form, many times eagles, bears, or coyotes to name a few, I never thought of myself as a spiritual person. And yet, I’m sure that what my eyes saw was real. I saw Declan’s essence leave his body. It was as if I were watching a beautiful bird take flight. Or better: a diver rising from the board, his body propelling upwards to the sky before the inevitable downward thrust. Declan’s soul was gone from his body before his brains hit the wall.
