Chapter 27 My ears ring. Everything is still as it was a moment ago. The night wind is still blowing outside. And the hallway in front of the Dark King’s chambers is still cold. But now, there’s a ringing in my ear. I shake my head like a dog. I must have misunderstood what the guard just said. “You think you’re like me?” I say. The words come out in an awed whisper. He blinks, as though unable to believe it himself. Then he nods. For a moment, I reel with the possibility. I’m not alone. There are others—or at least one other—who are like me. A tightness in my chest loosens at the thought of no longer being alone. No longer abandoned in a wide world full of people who don’t even know that I’m here. Then I come to my senses.
