Chapter 54
The guards are gone from the hallway outside the queen’s chambers. There’s no one there but the witch.
“They ran like frightened rabbits,” says the witch. “You can train a soldier to kill, but it’s a far greater task to train them not to run.”
I realize she’s talking to someone. I look around. There’s nobody but the two of us.
But she’s not looking at me. She’s looking down the hall.
“So, spirit. Why are you here?”
She can’t see me.
“Can you hear me?” I ask.
“I can.”
Blood rushes to my head. A thousand questions jam up in my mouth. Does she understand what is happening to me? Am I stuck here like a ghost forever? Can she reverse the curse and wake my body? And if she does, will I go back to my body?
“Before I banish you, tell me why you’re here,” she says to the window
