Chapter 5: Shadows in the Mirror

Mira sat cross-legged on her bed, staring at her hands. She could still feel the faint echo of the power that had surged through her hours ago. It was a sensation that refused to leave her—like static electricity crawling beneath her skin, waiting to erupt again. Lucian stood across the room, his arms crossed as he leaned against the wall. His golden eyes hadn’t left her since the demon attack, and his silence was unnerving. “Do you plan on just standing there all night?” Mira asked, breaking the heavy quiet. His lips curled into a faint smirk. “You nearly blew me through a wall earlier. Forgive me for being cautious.” She shot him a glare, but the exhaustion weighing her down dulled its effect. “I didn’t mean to. I don’t even know how it happened.” “That’s the problem,” he said, his smirk fading. He pushed off the wall and approached her, his steps slow and deliberate. “If you don’t learn to control it, you’ll kill someone. Or yourself.” Mira stiffened. “And whose fault is that? You’re the one who cursed me.” Lucian’s eyes darkened, and the temperature in the room seemed to drop. “I didn’t curse you, Mira. The Heart did. You were chosen long before I came into the picture.” She clenched her fists, frustration bubbling to the surface. “Chosen for what? To be hunted? To have monsters show up and tear my life apart?” “Chosen to wield the most powerful artifact in existence,” he said, his voice low and serious. “Do you have any idea what that means? What you are?” “I’m a person,” she snapped. “Not a weapon.” Lucian crouched in front of her, his intense gaze locking onto hers. “You don’t get to decide that. The Heart chose you for a reason. And if you don’t accept it, you’re as good as dead.” Mira’s breath hitched, but she refused to let him see her fear. “Why do you care? Isn’t this just about your survival?” For a moment, something flickered in his eyes—something vulnerable, almost human. But it was gone as quickly as it appeared. “I care,” he said finally, his voice softer, “because if you fall, this world falls with you.” The Training Begins The next morning, Mira found herself standing in the middle of an abandoned warehouse, the cold air biting at her skin. Dust motes danced in the pale light streaming through broken windows, and the place reeked of rust and mildew. “This is where you’re training me?” she asked, her voice dripping with skepticism. Lucian shrugged. “It’s isolated. If you accidentally blow something up, no one will notice.” “Comforting,” she muttered. Lucian turned to face her, his expression all business. “Your powers are tied to your emotions. The more you lose control, the stronger they get. That’s why you need to learn how to focus them.” “And how exactly am I supposed to do that?” “By facing your fear,” he said simply. Before she could ask what he meant, Lucian raised his hand, and a shadowy figure materialized in front of her. It was humanoid but featureless, its body made of swirling black smoke. “What is that?” Mira asked, taking a step back. “A shadow construct,” Lucian said. “It won’t kill you, but it will hurt.” Her eyes widened. “You want me to fight that?” “You’ll have to fight worse,” he said, his tone cold. “The demons hunting you won’t wait for you to be ready.” Mira swallowed hard, her heart pounding in her chest. “This is insane.” “Welcome to your new life,” Lucian said, crossing his arms. “Now fight.” Mira’s Power Awakens Again The shadow construct lunged at her, its movements unnaturally fast. Mira barely had time to dodge, her instincts screaming at her to run. But Lucian’s voice cut through her panic. “Focus, Mira! The power is inside you—use it!” “I don’t know how!” she shouted, her back hitting the wall. The construct struck out, its smoky arm slicing through the air. Mira raised her hands to shield herself, and the spark inside her flared to life. A burst of energy erupted from her, throwing the construct backward. The light and shadows danced together, twisting into a beam of raw power that scorched the ground where it hit. Mira stared at her hands, her chest heaving. The power felt stronger this time, more controlled—but it still frightened her. Lucian approached her slowly, his expression unreadable. “Not bad for a first try.” She glared at him, her fear morphing into anger. “You could’ve warned me!” “Warning you wouldn’t have helped,” he said. “You needed to feel the fear. That’s the only way to draw out your power.” Mira clenched her fists, her frustration boiling over. “You’re such an ass, you know that?” Lucian smirked, his golden eyes glinting with amusement. “And yet, you’re still alive. You’re welcome.” The New Threat As they left the warehouse, Mira couldn’t shake the feeling that they were being watched. The hairs on the back of her neck stood on end, and she glanced over her shoulder. “Something’s wrong,” she said, her voice barely above a whisper. Lucian stiffened, his golden eyes scanning the shadows around them. “We need to move. Now.” Before Mira could ask why, a low growl echoed through the air. Out of the darkness, a figure emerged—a man with glowing red eyes and a cruel smile. “Lucian Nightshade,” the man drawled, his voice dripping with malice. “It’s been a while.” Lucian stepped in front of Mira, his body tense. “Raven.” Mira’s heart raced as the two men stared each other down. Whoever this was, it was clear he wasn’t just another demon. “You’ve been busy,” Raven said, his gaze flicking to Mira. “Is this the girl? The one tied to the Heart?” Lucian didn’t answer, but his silence was enough. Raven’s smile widened. “Good. That makes this even more fun.”
