The portal’s light vanished behind me, leaving the cool night air pressing against my skin. My boots crunched against the dirt as I steadied myself, the cabin coming into view. Relief flooded me; for a moment, I feared the portal would take me elsewhere.
Belle stood outside, leaning against the porch railing. Her arms were crossed, her sharp eyes catching mine immediately. There was no chance to slip past her unnoticed.
“Kimberly,” she called softly, a knowing edge to her voice. “I thought we agreed not to use your powers until we were sure what they’re capable of. Where did you go?”
I swallowed hard, trying to mask my swirling emotions. “Just needed some air,” I said, forcing a lightness I didn’t feel. “I’m fine.”
