Engineer Folly and his children spent a long time at the mall. They played games and bought several things. At the mall, Engineer Folly met an old colleague who told him he just saw his wife at Tehila hotel with one man he often seen her with. “May be he was her colleague. I wanted to call her to ask after you, but I refrained because I didn’t know the man” his old colleague said.
Engineer Folly did not do as though the piece of information about his wife got him worried at all. Rather, he said “I see”. He greeted the old colleague very well. He started off a discussion about their former working place. They focused the gist on their former head of departments and their crookedness. While they gisted, his children have started helping themselves with some chocolate bars in the cart.
It was time to leave the mall. His children were so excited that they went out on shopping sprees, but Engineer Folly could not help but reminisce on what the old colleague inferred that he had always seen Debbie at Tehila hotel with certain man. This is not the first time somebody will see her at the same location, but she would always deny it as if people that saw her had eye problems.
Debbie had arrived before they got home. She too screamed seeing her husband. She told her husband she was so scared not meeting her children at home. The children were not at home; their second car was not at the garage; and the children all left their mobile phones at home as directed by their dad. Nothing gave Debbie a clue that it was her husband. She had concluded that it was her junior sister. “I thought it was my sister that was playing pranks, I was waiting to be mad at her”, she said as her husband kept smiling.
“So now who is sick? Is it you or Bright that has been bouncing up and down since? Who?”, Engineer Folly asked Debbie. “All of us are sick and tired of your not looking back to come and check on us for more than seven months now,” she replied.
Engineer Folly noticed that Debbie looked weak and pale. “Are you okay?”, he asked. “Am very okay. I have bought some malaria drugs to treat myself. They are inside the first aid box. I have also placed myself on local herbs to flush anything toxic out of my body. Making a jest of Debbie, he called her “madam self medication” because she won’t allow professionals to do their job. He advised her to go to the hospital for proper diagnosis. “You would want to be the caterer, gardener, chef, nurse, pharmacist, and now medical doctor. Why won’t you breakdown?” he wondered.
To the deep and discerning, it was obvious that Engineer Folly was not comfortable at all with the kind of drama Debbie is putting up lately. He was just playing along. He knew there was a hidden agenda. A case of more questions than answers. He also knew that the facts before him were contradictory, but there was no one to help him unravel the truth shrouded in mystery. So he determined to play along till time will permit him to make some tough decisions.
Engineer Folly pretended he had a late night meeting at his country office. Debbie was not happy, but she had no choice than to release him so as to enable him go and make more money.
At about 11:30pm, he sent a voice note telling her he could not come back home because his meeting lasted into the late night. He said he would manage to pass the night at their official lodge for security reasons. Debbie raged. She threatened to report her husband officially to his employers. She even called him a wicked and heartless man. All her rage and threats were after the facts. The deeds were done already. Her trap had caught nothing.
The following morning, Engineer Folly did not return home. Rather, he headed to the village to go and visit his mum. And to bring his elderly mum to Pretoria city for a short stay with his family.
His mum was so excited to see him. He had not been to the village for quite some time. He would send Debbie to the village, she would deliver the message by proxy.
Hours later, mama and Engineer Folly left the village for Pretoria city. They arrived into the waiting hands of her grand children. Another level excitement filled the air as the children greeted grandma. “Easy. Take it easy. Don’t push her down please,” he cautioned the children.
Later, Debbie returned from work. She greeted her husband very well as if there was not a clash between them last night. Within an official distance, she also greeted grandma. “How are you? And how was your trip mama? Let me quickly use the restroom, I will be back in minutes,” she said as she hurriedly run into the restroom pretending to be pressed.
After she left the restroom, she went to the kitchen to pick juice, water and bottle of roasted groundnut to entertain grandma. Even though she showed appreciation by standing up to hug Debbie, grandma did not touch any of those items put on the tray before her. She hugged Debbie again and they laughed loudly pretending to be happy seeing each other after a long time apart.
As soon as Debbie left the living room to freshen up, grandma made a damning observation about Debbie. She said Debbie was already about three months pregnant. And if her son was so sure he had not had s*x with her in the last few months, he should avoid having s*x with her before going back to California.
“Now I know why your wife hated my gut. I now know why she was always avoiding me. This girl had gone wayward. I would wait till her madness drift her naked before I begin to treat her f**k up”, grandma said. “Mama, what did you suspect?”, Engineer Folly asked. Grandma flared up. “Did I hear you use the word suspect? Do I look to you like a girl of yesterday? Look at my head and see grey hairs. You can never buy experience at the shopping mall. So, elders don’t suspect. We speak with facts. Elders speak from deep insight and experience that younger ones like you and your wife can never ever counterfeit”, she said.
She further said Engineer Folly witnessed the encounter between her and Debbie. She said she had warned Debbie not to come and put up any weird behavior in her son's matrimonial home. But now that Debbie had chosen to ignore her advice, she had no choice than to get ready to bite and sting at any opportuned time. “Don’t have s*x with your wife this time round, I warned you o,” grandma warned Engineer Folly again.
Engineer Folly became very sad, but he could not show it to Debbie. Debbie was also not happy at all. She was angry with herself and everyone, but she needed to curtain her anger and aggressions because of the secret pregnancy she was trying to hide. And because she did not want to incur her mother-in-law’s wrath if she made too much noise.
