CHAPTER SEVEN
THE KEEPER OF FORGOTTEN PATHS
Florence had never felt so crowded.
The streets overflowed with tourists, musicians, students, and merchants, yet Adrian had the unsettling feeling that someone was watching every step he took.
He stopped outside a centuries-old bookshop.
The sensation vanished.
He walked again.
It returned.
Elena noticed.
"You're looking over your shoulder too often."
"We're being followed."
"How many?"
"I've only seen one."
She gave a faint smile.
"If you've only seen one, there are probably three."
---
Instead of returning to their hotel, Elena led Adrian through a maze of narrow alleyways until they reached a quiet courtyard hidden behind an abandoned monastery.
There stood an old stone fountain.
Its water had long since dried.
At its centre was a weathered statue of a traveller carrying a walking staff.
Around the base of the statue were engraved words in Latin.
Adrian translated them aloud.
"The longest road is the one hidden beneath certainty."
Elena looked around carefully.
"We're early."
"Waiting for whom?"
"A man who doesn't trust clocks."
---
Nearly twenty minutes passed before footsteps echoed across the courtyard.
An elderly man appeared through the archway.
His beard was silver.
His walking cane was carved from dark walnut.
Despite his age, his eyes were remarkably sharp.
"You came," Elena said.
"I nearly didn't," the old man replied.
His gaze settled on Adrian.
"So..."
"You're Edmund's grandson."
Adrian froze.
"You knew my grandfather?"
The old man chuckled softly.
"I once saved his life."
---
His name was Gabriel Armand.
For more than fifty years, he had studied forgotten trade routes, abandoned fortresses, and ancient pilgrimage roads.
Most historians called him a retired geographer.
Only a handful knew the truth.
He was known among a secret circle of researchers as...
The Keeper of Forgotten Paths.
---
Inside the monastery library, Gabriel spread several ancient maps across a long oak table.
Each map showed a different century.
Different kingdoms.
Different borders.
Yet Adrian noticed something extraordinary.
A faint line appeared on every single map.
Always in the same position.
Even though the countries changed.
Even though rivers shifted.
Even though cities rose and fell.
The line remained.
"What is it?" Adrian asked.
Gabriel smiled.
"Not a road."
"Then what?"
"A route."
"There's a difference?"
"A road is built by men."
He gently touched the faded line.
"A route survives them."
---
Gabriel opened a wooden cabinet and removed a narrow leather journal.
Its pages were worn smooth by age.
"This belonged to your grandfather."
Adrian stared at the familiar handwriting.
"I thought all of his journals disappeared."
"They did."
"So how—"
"He gave this one to me."
Gabriel's expression became serious.
"He said I was only to hand it to you if you chose the path willingly."
Adrian carefully opened the journal.
Most pages contained sketches of mountains, valleys, and ancient stone markers.
Then he reached a folded sheet tucked between the pages.
It was another map.
Unlike the others, it showed no landscape.
Only a chain of symbols.
A crown.
A compass.
A mountain.
A key.
A gate.
A sun.
Finally...
A circle left empty.
"What does it mean?" Adrian asked.
Gabriel answered without hesitation.
"They are the Seven Marks."
"The seven what?"
"The seven objects created when Avarion disappeared."
Elena looked up sharply.
"There are seven relics?"
Gabriel nodded.
"And the fragment you found..."
He looked at Adrian.
"...belongs to the first."
---
Silence settled over the room.
Gabriel poured tea into three small cups before continuing.
"For centuries, explorers searched for Avarion itself."
He shook his head.
"They were looking in the wrong place."
Adrian leaned forward.
"What should they have been searching for?"
"The Seven Marks."
"Why?"
"Because Avarion cannot be found."
Adrian frowned.
"What do you mean?"
Gabriel looked directly into his eyes.
"It must be revealed."
---
Before Adrian could ask another question, a loud crash shattered the silence.
Glass exploded inward.
A smoke canister rolled across the wooden floor.
The room filled with thick grey smoke.
"Down!" Gabriel shouted.
Footsteps thundered outside.
Heavy.
Disciplined.
Not thieves.
Professionals.
Elena grabbed Adrian's arm.
"This way!"
Another window burst open.
A masked figure leapt into the library.
His face was hidden behind a black visor.
On his jacket was a silver emblem.
Not the crowned symbol.
A different mark.
A sword piercing a circle.
He said only one sentence.
"Take the journal."
Three more figures entered behind him.
Gabriel struck the nearest attacker with his cane, sending him crashing into a bookshelf.
Ancient books scattered across the floor.
Adrian clutched his grandfather's journal tightly.
The lead attacker drew a compact crossbow.
Its bolt flew across the room.
Gabriel shoved Adrian aside.
The bolt buried itself deep into the old man's shoulder.
He staggered but remained standing.
"Go!" he shouted.
"Now!"
Elena pulled Adrian through a narrow side passage hidden behind the shelves.
As the secret door slammed shut behind them, Gabriel's final words echoed through the stone corridor.
"Protect the journal... before they awaken the Immortals!"
The passage descended into darkness.
Behind them, the sounds of struggle faded.
Ahead...
Only silence remained.
