The nights were the hardest. Amara sat by the small window, the faint hum of crickets filling the silence. In her arms, the twins slept peacefully—one on each side, their tiny breaths soft and steady. She stared at them, her chest tightening. “How did I get so lucky…?” she whispered. The boy stirred first, his tiny fingers curling instinctively around her shirt. The girl followed, letting out a soft sigh as she nestled closer. Amara smiled faintly, brushing a gentle hand over their heads. “You two saved me,” she murmured. The past still lingered like a shadow she couldn’t fully escape. Some nights, she remembered everything too clearly—the cold words, the humiliation, the pain. But then she looked at them. And nothing else mattered. “I promise,” she said softly, her voice steady now. “No matter what happens… I’ll give you everything I never had.” The next morning came quickly. Life didn’t slow down just because she had children. If anything, it became harder. Balancing work and motherhood felt impossible some days. The sewing shop demanded long hours, and the twins demanded her entire heart. But she learned. Adapted. Survived. Mama Grace helped where she could, often watching the twins while Amara worked downstairs. “You’re stronger than you think,” the old woman told her one afternoon. Amara only smiled. Strength wasn’t a choice. It was necessity. Months passed. The twins grew. And so did she.
