The Shadow Revealed

839 Words
Aarav’s breath caught in his throat. The figure stepped forward into the harsh white light of the control room. No shadows left. No mystery hiding their face. “Sir…?” The word slipped out before Aarav could stop it. Standing in front of them— Calm. Composed. Almost… disappointed— Was Mr. Verma. Their computer science teacher. Meera’s voice trembled. “No… that’s not possible.” Mr. Verma looked at them quietly, his expression unreadable. “I was wondering how long it would take,” he said. Aarav’s mind raced. Every moment. Every clue. Every message. “You…” Aarav whispered. “You’ve been watching us?” Mr. Verma tilted his head slightly. “Observing,” he corrected. Meera shook her head. “This doesn’t make sense. You teach us. You—” “I also understand systems,” he said calmly. “And how people behave within them.” The hum of machines filled the silence. Aarav stepped forward. “What is all this?” he demanded. “What were you doing to Rohan?” For the first time— Mr. Verma’s expression changed. Just slightly. “Rohan,” he repeated. A pause. “He was… exceptional.” Aarav clenched his fists. “Then why did he disappear?” Mr. Verma didn’t answer immediately. Instead, he walked past them, glancing at the screens. “He asked too many questions,” he said finally. Meera’s voice shook. “So you just… removed him?” Mr. Verma stopped. Turned slowly. “You think this is that simple?” he said. Aarav didn’t back down. “Then explain it.” Silence. Then— Mr. Verma sighed. “This system,” he said, gesturing around, “was designed to study behavior.” Aarav’s jaw tightened. “By spying on students?” “By understanding them,” Mr. Verma corrected. Meera stepped forward now. “That’s not understanding. That’s control.” Mr. Verma looked at her. And for a moment— There was something almost like regret. “You don’t see the bigger picture,” he said. Aarav snapped. “Then show us!” The room went still. Then— Mr. Verma walked to the main console. Pressed a few keys. The screens changed. Graphs. Patterns. Data flows. “Every movement,” he said. “Every decision.” “Every reaction.” Aarav stared. “They’re all predictable.” Meera whispered: “That’s not right…” Mr. Verma turned back to them. “It is reality.” Aarav shook his head. “No. That’s control. You’re turning people into data.” Mr. Verma’s eyes hardened slightly. “And what is wrong with understanding how people think?” Aarav stepped closer. “Because you didn’t ask them.” Silence. That hit something. But Mr. Verma quickly recovered. “Rohan said the same thing,” he said quietly. Aarav’s heart pounded. “What happened to him?” This time— Mr. Verma answered. “He tried to expose it.” Meera’s breath caught. “So what did you do?” she asked. Mr. Verma looked at them both. “I tried to stop him.” A pause. “But he ran.” Aarav’s mind raced. “He escaped?” Mr. Verma didn’t respond. That silence said everything. Meera whispered: “You lost him…” Mr. Verma’s jaw tightened. “He disappeared before I could contain the situation.” Aarav’s eyes widened. “So he’s not…?” Mr. Verma shook his head. “I don’t know where he is.” Silence. Everything shifted again. Rohan wasn’t gone. He was missing. Still out there. Aarav exhaled slowly. Then— He realized something. “The messages…” he said. Mr. Verma frowned slightly. “What messages?” Aarav’s heart skipped. “You weren’t the one warning me?” Mr. Verma’s expression changed. Confusion. Genuine confusion. “No,” he said. Meera’s voice dropped. “Then who is?” The room felt colder. More dangerous. Before anyone could speak— The screens flickered. All at once. Lines of code flooded the displays. Rapid. Uncontrolled. Mr. Verma turned sharply. “What is this?” Aarav stepped back. “This wasn’t us.” The system glitched again. Then— Every screen went black. For a second— Silence. Then— One screen turned back on. A single message appeared. “You were wrong.” Mr. Verma’s face changed completely. For the first time— He looked… afraid. The message updated. “I didn’t disappear.” Aarav’s breath caught. “No way…” Meera whispered: “Rohan…” Another line appeared. “I’ve been watching too.” The room froze. Mr. Verma stepped back slowly. “This isn’t possible…” A final line appeared. “Now it’s my turn.” The lights flickered violently. The machines hummed louder. Then— Everything shut down. Complete darkness. Aarav’s heart pounded. “Meera—stay close.” Somewhere in the darkness— A soft sound. Footsteps. Not Mr. Verma. Not them. Someone else. And this time— They weren’t hiding.
