The Hidden Code

The records room felt colder than usual. Aarav stood still, the file of Rohan Mehta clutched tightly in his hands. The faint scraping sound he had heard moments ago still echoed in his mind. He turned slowly. No one. Just rows of shelves. Old files. Silence. But the feeling didn’t leave. Someone had been there. Watching. He quickly closed the file and slid it back into place. “Don’t panic,” he whispered to himself. “Just leave.” But as he stepped toward the door— His phone buzzed. Unknown Number. Again. Aarav hesitated. Then opened it. “You’re digging too deep.” His grip tightened. He typed back instantly: “Who are you?” This time, the reply came almost immediately. “Someone who couldn’t stop him either.” Aarav’s heart skipped. Him. Rohan. Before he could reply— Another message appeared: “If you want answers… decode page 17.” Aarav froze. Page 17. From the notebook. He looked around once more. Still no one. But now— This didn’t feel like a warning. It felt like… direction. That evening, Aarav sat at his desk, the notebook open in front of him. Page 17. Unlike the earlier pages, this one looked more complex. Dense. Layered. Lines of symbols arranged in blocks, not sequences. “This isn’t simple substitution,” he muttered. Meera, sitting across from him, frowned. “English, please.” Aarav leaned forward. “It’s not just one code. It’s multiple layers.” Meera sighed. “Of course it is.” For the next hour, Aarav worked in silence. He tried patterns. Shifts. Reversals. Nothing worked. Frustration built. “Come on…” he muttered. “You’re missing something obvious.” Meera leaned closer. “What if it’s not about letters?” she said. Aarav paused. “What do you mean?” She pointed. “These symbols… they’re grouped. Like coordinates.” Aarav stared at the page. Coordinates. His eyes widened. “You’re right.” He quickly grabbed a sheet of paper and started mapping the symbols. Rows. Columns. Positions. And suddenly— It clicked. “It’s a grid cipher,” he said, excitement rising in his voice. “Each symbol points to a position.” “Position of what?” Meera asked. Aarav flipped back to earlier pages. “The key is hidden in the previous codes,” he said. Minutes passed. Then— Finally— The message began to form. Broken at first. Then clearer. Aarav read it aloud slowly: “Where walls end, the truth continues.” Meera blinked. “That’s… confusing.” Aarav didn’t reply. He was already thinking. “Walls…” he murmured. “End…” Then suddenly— He looked up. “The school boundary.” Meera frowned. “What?” “The walls of the school,” Aarav said. “Where they end… something continues.” “You think this is outside?” she asked. Aarav nodded slowly. “This is the first clue that leads beyond the school.” Meera leaned back. “I don’t like that.” Aarav smirked slightly. “I do.” That night— They went. The school boundary stretched behind the main building, leading toward a quieter, less-used area of town. The streetlights were dim. The air was still. “Last chance to turn back,” Meera said. Aarav shook his head. “Too late for that.” They followed the outer wall. Step by step. Watching. Listening. And then— They reached it. The wall ended. Abruptly. Beyond it— An empty stretch of land. Overgrown. Silent. And in the distance— A structure. Meera squinted. “Is that… a warehouse?” Aarav nodded. “Looks like it.” The building stood alone. Old. Unused. Or at least— That’s how it looked. “This is it,” Aarav said. “The next step.” They moved closer. Carefully. The ground crunched beneath their feet. Every sound felt too loud. As they approached the warehouse— Aarav noticed something. A faint light. Inside. Meera saw it too. “That place is not abandoned.” Aarav’s expression hardened. “Neither was the hidden room.” They reached the door. Rusty. Half-open. Aarav placed his hand on it. Paused. “This is bigger than we thought,” Meera whispered. He nodded. “I know.” Then— He pushed the door open. Inside— Darkness. But not complete. A single hanging bulb lit part of the room. Revealing— Tables. Equipment. Stacks of files. And something else. A wall. Covered in photos. Notes. Connections. Like a map. Meera stepped inside slowly. “This looks like…” “An investigation,” Aarav finished. He moved closer to the wall. His eyes scanned the photos. Students. Teachers. Locations. And then— He saw it. Rohan Mehta. At the center. Connected to everything. Aarav’s chest tightened. “He was mapping something,” he said. “Something big.” Meera pointed. “Aarav… look at this.” A section of the wall had recent notes. Fresh. Clean. Not old. Someone had been here. Recently. Aarav stepped back slowly. “This isn’t just Rohan’s work anymore.” A sudden sound echoed behind them. Click. The door. Closing. They turned sharply. A figure stood at the entrance. Hidden in shadow. “Curiosity,” the voice said calmly, “can be dangerous.” Aarav’s heart pounded. The same voice. From the hidden room. Meera whispered: “It’s them…” The figure stepped forward slightly. Still not fully visible. “You followed the code,” they said. “Just like he did.” Aarav clenched his fists. “Who are you?” The figure tilted their head. “That’s not the right question.” A pause. Then— They said quietly: “The real question is…” “Do you want to end up like him?” Silence. Heavy. Unmoving. Aarav didn’t step back. Didn’t run. Instead— He said: “What did Rohan find?” The figure didn’t answer immediately. Then— They smiled. Just slightly. And said: “Something that was never meant to be seen.” The light flickered. And in that moment— Aarav realized something terrifying. This wasn’t the end of the mystery. It was only the beginning. END OF EPISODE 6
