Chapter 3 - Events

On Saturdays of every week the girls used to go shopping in the town accompanied by Miss Ary. Phillips san used to be in charge of the orphanage on those days. Likewise on Sundays, the boys were permitted to go out accompanied by him. Now that I think about it, I still don't know the reason why we were not allowed to go out everyday. Rio and I were given the duty of cleaning the backyard that Saturday. He was very excited because it was Koi's birthday. It all was very strange to me, like how can someone be happy for someone else's birthday... anyway, maybe it was because I did not understand what was "love". So, Rio had bought a present for her as a birthday gift. It was a ribbon with quite a unique design. When I had asked him the reason for choosing a ribbon he had said that it would look beautiful on her long hair. Well, I was in no position to give any kind of advice in these matters so I satisfied myself with his answer. "The weather is nice today, isn't it?" "I can sense your tension just from the way you are speaking" "Ahhhhhh!", Rio sighed "Buying a present is something but gifting it is very... VERY DIFFERENT!!" "Deal with it, fool." "Well, the weather is really good actually." I looked at the sky. It was very cloudy, like the sky one would expect before raining. For some reason something felt very nostalgic in the setting - like the clouds, the atmospheric pressure, the wind speed, the temperature every single thing. "Hmmm, I am very fond of this climate. It's a different kind of pheel, you know." "Pheel - what is that?" Rio asked in a strange expression. "Just a term invented by me to add more pheel to feel" I smirked a little after making that weird statement. Rio started laughing all of a sudden and then fell down on the ground backwards with his hands stretched on the grass. "What, have you gone mad?" "Man your face is appropriate for elevating ones mood ha ha ha-" "I will kill you, i***t!" After a while Rio stopped laughing. "I wonder how it feels standing on top of this hill" He was looking at the southern hills. "I think so too, sometimes.... what it would feel like..." "Let's climb those hills one day, the three of us, on a day like this." said Rio in an uplifting tone with a smile. "Yeah, sure - let's do so someday..." "It would be our longest sneak out till date" "Yupp" "Even if we are scolded I would have no regrets as long as I can see this town from up there... with both of you beside me." "Don't become sentimental, i***t!" I sat down beside him after saying that. "Don't forget to -" "Zzzzzzz" Suddenly a weird sound filled the atmosphere. "What is this buzzing noise... " It weirder me out too. The sound was coming from the top of the hills. Our vision was completely blocked by the clouds surrounding the top of the hills. It was a very creepy feeling. We were both looking intently at the grey clouds in search for anything different. Although it was a creepy moment, the beauty of the clouds continued to amaze me. "Hey.... is that a bug?" Something very small came out of the clouds. "Huh?" Rio stressed his eyes. "Hmmm I see something" "Are those giant bees?" "Are you an... i***t! Stop leaving in fantasy worlds! Those are planes." "Planes?" It was the first time I saw planes in my life although same goes for everyone. "Hmmm" As we stared at the sky, a fleet of planes emerged from the clouds, following the first plane. "Not less for a first time look, I guess", commented Rio. "What are so many planes doing here?" ,I asked, looking at the black dots emerging from the beautiful grey aura. "It can be that there is an emergency somewhere and these planes are heading there to help or something, I read in a book at the library that planes are very useful for such purposes...." said Rio "That better be it because there should not be any other reasons" A chill ran down my spine. I could feel myself sweating in that cool atmosphere. Was it really the first time I was seeing planes, I wondered. "Maybe..." We continued looking at the planes as they gradually came over us. I wanted to move from the place I was sitting very badly but it was like one of those moments when you freeze up due to fear and try to forcefully induce fake optimism in your mind. "Hey... what are... what a -are those things?", I asked Rio "Is that what I a-" Small black things started falling from the planes. Some of those black things were falling in the direction of the orphanage. "what I a... am thinking?!?" . "Hey we...SHOULD....MOVE FROM HERE!", I shouted frantically. Both of us actually could feel what was about to happen but we were glued to the ground all that time, unable to think of anything which should be done. Our breathing had gone crazy. Rio stood up slowly with his legs shaking while I could not get up yet. "Hey, Rio and Two - have you completed? " It was the gentle voice of Phillips san. Rio turned back and looked down at first floor window of the orphanage building. I came back to my senses and slowly looked at the window. It was Phillips san. "GET OUT OF THERE!" I still remember that desperate shout of Rio. It was just two seconds before the first explosion. A sudden ringing sound in my ears, a blinding flash of light and with drops of blood on my face, I sat in front of annihilation. In a few seconds the cold winds changed to the heat of flames and the silence was replaced by the sound of burning. The sound of big explosions followed one after the other as the buzzing sound advanced into our home. To be continued...
