Heading Back Home

1849 Words
Kenzi: I grab the paper from Alex’s hand. As our hands touch, I feel an electric shock going through my body. It wasn't painful, on the contrary, it felt quite nice. Weird. I place the paper in my back pocket and head out, wishing Alex goodbye. For some reason I kind of feel sad about leaving this place. I was surprised to see the GPS saying I was only 45 minutes away from home. I can't wait to be home, so why does my heart feel heavy all of a sudden? Alex: I watch as Kenzi leaves the coffee shop and heads to her car. I can't let her go and not know if I will ever see her again, or more importantly, if she will make her destination safely. I quickly decide to mindlink Jackson, our Alpha and one of my closest friends. “Hey Jackson, can I have permission to leave my post for a few hours?” “Where are you heading Alex?” “Long story short, I found my mate. She's human and I want to make sure she makes it to her parents place safe and sound” “Congrats dude.” “So, can I go? She's about to leave. I can't lose her man!” “Sure thing Alex. I'll send Brad to take your place. Go get her tiger” he laughs at me through the mind link. I quickly make it to the outskirt of town and shift into Chase. I catch up to her car rather quickly, staying just outside of her line of sight so as not to get spotted. Thank the Goddess for the line of trees along the main road. It helps give me some cover. After about 45 minutes, she finally slows down near a modest country style home. I'm really glad her parents don't live farther out. I'm in shape but I had to run at my top speed to keep pace with her car and I was starting to get winded. Plus, there aren’t many trees around here so it was harder to hide my huge wolf. Luckily there are plenty of fields and the corn was partially grown hiding me somewhat. I found a spot to lie down in a field of long grass behind her house and just observe and listen, making sure she was ok. I can hear her talking to her parents. A man in his 50’s, who I assume is her father, goes outside and starts grabbing her luggage from the car and carrying it back inside. I hear her mom tell her she would make her a sandwich for lunch. Me and Chase are quiet just listening and observing for a few more minutes. She's in good hands now so we start trotting back home at a leisurely pace. At least I know where she lives now. I have to come up with a plan if she decides not to take the job at the clinic with Sam. I need to see her again soon and hopefully make her smile some more. She deserves to smile more. Kenzi: Being back home is nice but also very weird. My mom is non-stop checking up on me. I barely have any alone time. Not that I don't appreciate everything that my parents are doing for me, but I've been on my own for the last 4 years and I'm used to my personal space. I did have a roommate back in Montreal but she mostly kept to herself, locked up in her room, so we barely ever saw each other. I’ve been home for less than a week and I already feel like I'm losing my mind. I don't think I've had more than an hour to myself other than when I go to sleep. Most nights I'm so exhausted, I pass out as soon as my head hits the pillow. All I want is to curl up in a blanket, watch tv and cry my eyes out about Steve and the baby but my mom won't let me. She makes me go shopping with her and go for long walks. She makes me help with the cooking and baking and let me tell you, she had me make enough food for an army. I don't know what she will do with the mountains of pies and cookies and casseroles we made. Good thing they have a rather large freezer. There's no way that we will get through all that food with just the three of us...or should I say four. My baby should count as a person right? Not that I've been eating much the last few days. I'm constantly nauseous. I don't know if it's my stress levels or if it's the baby’s fault, but in either case, my stomach ain't happy. By Thursday I've had enough of my mother's diversion tactics and decided it was time to look for a job. It might not be easy but I need to get out of this house and I need to find a way to support my unborn child. I start googling the closest clinics and hospitals. I can't believe my eyes. The closest one I could find listed was over an hour away. Thinking back, I don't think I've ever needed to go to the clinic when I was a kid. I suddenly remember Alex giving me the number of a clinic looking to hire in that small town I had stopped by. That was 45 minutes away. It's weird that it didn't show up on Google. Maybe I could drive back and forth for a little while, until I had enough saved to rent my own place. Staying at my parents would allow me to have their help when my baby arrives. I wouldn't get that kind of help if I lived in the city three hours away. I rushed upstairs to my bedroom and searched my stuff for that paper. I found it in my jeans pocket. Luckily my mom kept me so busy I haven't had the time to do my laundry. I quickly pull out my cell phone and call Sam. “Doctor Sam speaking, how may I help you?” “Uhm...Hi. My name is Kensi...eh...Alex gave me your number...eh... said you were looking to hire a new nurse?” I ask nervously. “Hi Kensi. Alex did mention I might get a call from you.” “I'm sorry, I didn't know you were a doctor. I didn't mean to bother you. It's just, Alex didn't give me the number of your human resources and I couldn't find your clinic online.“ I blabbed out. The doctor laughs “It's all good Kenzi. I'm also the one in charge of personnel, it is my clinic after all.” “Oh” The doctor chuckles. “So ehm...are you still looking to hire a new nurse? I just graduated top of my class and did some volunteer work at a pediatric clinic in Montreal.” I was rambling again. “Deep breaths Kenzi, I would love to have you over for an interview. How does tomorrow at two sound?” “That sounds perfect. Thank you so much! One last thing...eh... did Alex tell you about my situation?” “And what situation might that be?” “I'm two months pregnant” I say with a sigh. “That shouldn't be a problem. It still leaves you over 6 months before your maternity leave. We can discuss it some more tomorrow if you have any questions.” “Really? You would still give me a chance?” He chuckles again “Of course. Now I have to run. I have patients to check up on. I’ll see you tomorrow at two sharp. Don't be late. The clinic is on Mapledale. Take a right after the coffee shop on the main road, and then a left before the park. You can't miss it.” “Thank you so much. See you tomorrow Dr. Sam” I couldn’t believe he was going to give me a shot. I was so excited!!! I’m about to put the paper with the phone number in my wallet in case I would need it again and notice at the bottom that Alex left me his number too. I decide to send him a quick text to thank him. "Hey Alex, I don't know if you remember me. I'm Kenzi, we met at the coffee shop. Anyways, just wanted to thank you for the contact information. I have an interview with your friend from the clinic tomorrow. Wish me luck :)" To my surprise he actually wrote back. "Hi Kenzi, who could forget someone as beautiful as you. I'm glad you got the interview. Maybe we'll bump into each other again sometime soon. Good luck!" Wasn't that sweet! I feel my cheeks blush as I rush to give the good news to my mom. Alex: I smile looking down at the text Kenzi sent me. I can’t believe she is coming back! This week has been the longest week of my life. Chase has been super grumpy. I can’t get Kenzi out of my head. I was already planning on heading over to her place this weekend to see if I couldn't bump into her “accidently”. Now I need to come up with a plan for her to stay. She needs to fall in love with this place and accept the job. I know Sam would offer it to her. The interview was just a formality. I quickly mindlink Sam. “Hey Sam, I just heard you are interviewing Kenzi tomorrow. Do you know what time she will be here?” “Wow, you're quick. I was just about to tell you she was coming over tomorrow at two. Alex, are you sure you want her around while she is involved with someone else? I don’t think Chase will be able to stay calm if he sees her kissing some human.” “What are you talking about? She isn't dating anyone!” “I thought you knew, she told me she was two months pregnant.” “Oh yeah that, well he isn't in the picture anymore.” “Ok, well that's good, for you anyways. Maybe next time give me a heads up. It made for a somewhat awkward conversation.” “Sorry Doc, it just slipped my mind,” “All good Alex. Interview should be done by three if you want to happen to be there.” “How did you know I was planning on bumping into her?” “I’m not born yesterday Alex. If she's your mate, there's no way you would let her be this close and not see her.” “Yeah, you’re right. Thanks Doc.” “No problem. See you tomorrow Alex.” “Yup, have a good evening Doc.” “You too Alex” With that I commenced "Operation Impress Mate". I have to hurry, she will be here within 24h.
