Chapter 3: Marriage Proposal

1770 Words
Miguel ran out of the elevator, just in time to see Mikayla get into her car. That silly brat, he thought. She still even had the audacity to wave at him after what she did in his bathroom. She had the nerve to drop all her limited editions into the water closet. Does she have any idea of how much one cost him, not to talk of seventeen? “Is there a problem, Mr Turner?" Charles asked. “Not exactly," Miguel answered, smiling a little even if he was beyond pissed. “Ha,I see. By the way sir, are you aware of the fact that you only have your towel on?" Charles asked, looking elsewhere. Miguel looked down and saw that Charles was right and that people were starting to stare at him. Some young girls had their phones up and were taking pictures of him. They were even giggling. Damn it, he didn't even have a shirt on. Angrily, he stomped back into the elevator and back into his room. Miguel got dressed and stepped out of his penthouse. Already, he had called his driver to get his car from the bar, and he could see the driver waiting outside for him. “Good morning Mr Turner". His driver, Alex, said as soon as he got outside. " Good morning Alex, thank you for getting my car”. Miguel replied, " It's my job sir” Alex said, smiling as he opened the car door for Miguel. Miguel got in, and they started their drive to the office. Miguel rested his head and started to doze off when his phone rang. He was going to ignore it, but he picked up and saw that the caller was his dad. " Hi Dad” he said, after picking up the call " Where are you?” His dad asked, from the receiving end. " On my way to the office" he answered. “Skip that. Come home ,we have a lot to discuss", his dad said. “But dad, I have something that requires my urgent attention", Miguel protested. “Leave it and get home now" his dad shouted before hanging up. Miguel sighed and scratched his hair before telling Alex to turn off the car and head home. Alex did as he was told, and soon they arrived at Tunner's mansion. Miguel sighed again, got down from the car without waiting for Alex to open the car door and walked into the house to see his dad and one of his business partners that he recognized to be Mr Anderson, sitting and laughing at each other's jokes. “Good morning dad” he said, as he approached them. His dad and Mr Anderson looked up and stopped laughing. " Hello son, good to have you back home “his dad said ,making it seem as if he had not forced him to come there. “I'm sure you remember Mark, but I'm sure you would know him as Mr Anderson” he continued, laughing as if he had said something funny. Miguel looked at Mark and nodded" Nice to meet you again, Mr Anderson.” " Oh nice to meet you again, how many months has it been since we saw each other?” Mark responded. “Have a seat, son" his dad said. Miguel sat down on the sofa beside Mark and said “What was so urgent that you called me this early dad?" His dad frowned and said" I have something urgent to discuss with you.” “So you said, Dad. I'm listening, and I presume that it has something to do with Mark here”, Miguel said. " It does. I want you to marry Mark's daughter”, his dad answered. Miguel stared at his dad and then at Mark and then started laughing. “Oh you must be joking" he said, after he finished laughing. “Oh I'm not", his dad said. “How do you expect me to marry someone that I don't know? For all I know, she could be ugly or a creep. No offense Mark”, Miguel argued, turning to Mark. “None taken son and I can assure you that my daughter is not ugly, neither is she a creep. I'll have you know that she's an intelligent young lady”, Mark answered. Miguel smirked and turned to his dad. "Anyway, do I have to marry someone that I don't know?" “Yes, you do, and it's a must" his dad answered. Mark stood and said" As much as I would like to stay with you, I think I also have a similar problem at home too, so I have to go now. “ Miguel's dad stood too and smiled at him before shaking his hand." Alright then. I'll let you know the exact date. Bye now" Mark exited the house and Miguel turned again to his dad. “Dad, you can't be serious" “ Oh I am. Very", his dad answered. " But why? Where is this coming from?" Miguel asked. “This marriage will be beneficial to everybody". His dad said. “To everyone or to you? Do you even know if Mark's daughter, whatever her name is ,wants to marry me?” Miguel asked. " I'm sure her dad will persuade her. Now you must marry this lady or else." “Or else what" Miguel asked, frustratedly. “I'll revoke my decision to make you the board Chairman and the president of my company". His dad answered, “You can't do that." “Try me and see". His dad answered and walked out of the sitting room. Miguel slumped on the chair and muttered a curse. Mikayla sat in her room still replaying her father's last words. It seemed as if her last world had ended and another world had been opened for her to live in. How did her father expect her to marry a complete stranger?, she thought. She laid on her bed and sighed, picking up her to see several messages from Lucas giving flimsy excuses as to why he cheated on her. Angrily, she dropped her phone and turned to face the other side of the bed. She heard a knock on her door and she turned to see her mum enter the room. “Hi my love", her mum said. “Hi mum" she answered, sitting up. Her mum walked to her bed and sat on the edge of it. “How are you holding up?" she asked. “What do you think?" Mikayla answered, angrily. “I'm sorry, that was rude" she continued. “It's okay. I probably deserve that", her mum said, chuckling. " It's not your fault mum”, Mikayla said. " It's not your dad's fault either”, her mum answered. " Then why is he making me marry someone that I don't love?” she asked. Her mum sighed and said” Honey, you shouldn't blame your dad either.” " How can I not?” Mikayla asked. " Because his company is going bankrupt”, his mum said. Mikayla looked at her mum to see if she was joking, but she couldn't find any signs of a joke. “You're not joking?" She asked. “Of course I'm not”, her mum answered. “How, when, why?” She asked. " Turns out your dad's business hasn't been doing well for a couple of months, so he had to borrow money from one of his business partners and now the person wants their money back. Mr Turner offered to help, but he said," You have to marry his son’’Her mum said. “But can't we give him something else? Maybe a share in the company or something. I really do not want to marry his son", Mikayla said. “Baby, I know you love Lucas and you want to marry him, but think of your family too", her mum said, with eyes full of tears. “Please don't cry, Mum. It's not about Lucas, besides I broke up with him”, Mikayla said. " You did?, when?” " Yesterday, it was a complicated story and I don't want to talk about it. The point is, I don't think I'm ready for another relationship, not to talk of marriage”, Mikayla answered. “I know", her mum said, “No, you don't, mum. You don't know how it feels because your parents didn't force you to marry someone you've never met before." Mikayla screamed, tears gathering in her eyes. “But…” her mum began, but Mikayla cut her off and said" I'd like to have some rest now mum. I can at least have that before you and dad sell me off". She laid back down on her bed and turned her face to the wall to avoid looking at her mum. Her mum stood up and walked out of the room, sighing. Miguel sat in his office, staring at his ceiling. After the news that his father had been dropped and the argument that followed, he had gone to his office ,thinking that he could get some work done, but he had just been staring at his ceiling for the last hour. “What's up man?" Dylan said, as soon as he walked in. Miguel looked and sat up.” Dad wants me to marry some chick." Dylan sat on the couch opposite him and started laughing. “This is not funny bro", Miguel said. Dylan stopped laughing and said “you're serious?" “Of course,I am. Told me that he would not make me the board chairman if I refused.” Dylan sighed and said" Then marry her.” Miguel looked at Dylan as if he had grown four heads. “What do you mean I should marry her?" Dude, I don't even know her.” " So?? You've slept with strangers that you've never met before.” Dylan answered. " That's different from that" Miguel argued. “How is it any different?" Dylan asked. “ I don't have to spend the rest of my life with a total stranger". Miguel said “Look dude, would you rather spend the rest of your life with a total stranger who would probably be a young and attractive lady or lose your company, the same one that you've worked for your entire life and spend the rest of your life regretting it?” Dylan asked Miguel slumped on his chair again and sighed. Guess he was going to get married after all.
