Chapter 8Dido could just hear the mob’s chatter from inside the herbalist’s shop, people excited to see the Trojan ships depart. She closed the door behind her and the murmur died. It was far too gloomy in here. Dusty bottles lined every shelf. Behind the counter, a plump woman with flushed cheeks pretended to read a wax ledger. Dido could feel the woman’s eyes on her back as she looked through the shop. ‘After anything in particular, dear?’ Dido wrung her hands to stop herself making sure the wig was secure. ‘No, just looking.’ ‘Ah.’ The herbalist smiled with her mouth, but not her eyes. ‘If there’s anything I can help with, do let me know.’ ‘Thank you. I will.’ Dido looked down, turning the crude containers over and setting them back in their places. She frowned, not quite sure what
