Chapter 9: The Power Of Platinum

1369 Words
Ryan gave the head of the security team a dirty look and said, “You had better show me some respect. Otherwise, you will soon find yourself unemployed.” He had not come here to start a fight, but he was not afraid of finishing one. “Who do you think you are!” the guard roared. “Get out now!” Ryan suddenly realized that the security staff may not know about the platinum card, and he said, “I want to talk to your manager.” The leading security guard did not move. After a while, he put the nightstick own on his open palm and said, “I am not going to waste my manager’s time over this. Get out! Now! Do you hear me?” “My time is equally valuable,” Ryan explained. The guard was losing his temper, but he was as cool as a cucumber. Ryan’s calm demeanor left the guard feeling unsettled, and he finally went to get the manager. Moments later, they returned. The manager took one look at the situation and he demanded to know what was going on.    The head of the security team pointed to Ryan and said, “This man is quarreling with Mr. Miller. I asked him to leave, but he refused.” The manager looked Ryan up and down, and when he saw that there was nothing special about him, he said, “I’m sorry, Sir, but could you please leave now? You are bad for business. Again, I am sorry for the inconvenience.” “Perhaps I am in the wrong,” Ryan admitted. He frowned and his brows furrowed. “I was led to believe that my membership is good in all of the Wood Family businesses. What about this car dealership is different?” “As if you have a membership!” Mandy scoffed. “You are a liar! If you have a card, why don’t you show it to us?” “Of course.” Ryan nodded, took the platinum card out of his wallet, and passed it to the manager. The manager took it, and when he saw what it was, a troubled look appeared on his face.  He gave his guards a dirty look. Then he forced himself to smile and turned back to Ryan. “I am really sorry,” he said. “I didn’t know that you had this card.” Finally, he looked at Kevin. “Sorry, Mr. Miller. I am afraid that I must insist that you leave now.” This reversal was beyond Kevin’s comprehension, and Mandy was just as surprised. “Are you serious?” she shouted. Kevin is a VERY IMPORTANT PERSON. He and I spend hundreds of thousands of dollars here every year!” “Be that as it may…” The manager shrugged. “This man has a platinum card… What he says, goes. There are only three of these in Edmonton, and whoever carries them carries the authority of Mr. Woods.” “It’s not possible!” Molly was incredulous. “He is nothing but a w*********h Bum!” “The world is changing, Mandy,” Ryan said quietly. His words filled Mandy’s mind with a myriad of thoughts. She wondered – If he is rich, why am I just finding out about it? “We shall see!” Mandy snorted, and she turned to Kevin. “I know when I’m not wanted. Let’s get the Hell out of here.” She turned back to look at Ryan one last time. “This isn’t over,” she grumbled. Once the couple was gone, the manager turned to Ryan and said, “Please accept our sincere apology. Let me show you some of our newest models.” The head of the security team was so anxious that he could not stop trembling. Ryan smiled to himself, walked over to him, and asked, “Do you still want to kick me out?” The security team leader lowered his head and said nothing. “Apologize to Mr. Jones,” The manager commanded. He did not really intend to be hard on him. He was helping the security guard earn Ryan’s forgiveness. “I’m really sorry, sir,” the guard replied. “I thought you were…” The manager rubbed his forehead and thought – This security guard is hopeless at begging for forgiveness. “Would you like to finish that sentence?” Ryan asked. “You thought I was a poor man? Is that not true? Don’t you know that you cannot judge a book by its cover?” He ‘Boop’d’ the man’s nose disrespectfully and said, “You are not suitable for this position.” Ryan was resolved to make things difficult for him. The head of security was not well educated. He had not been in town for long, and if he lost his job, he would be up s**t creek without a paddle. He apologized again and began to beg to keep his job. The manager knew about the living conditions of the security guard, so he interceded on his behalf: “Mr. Jones, this man really needs this job. Could we please just let this one slide? After all, he wouldn’t have behaved this way without that other couple’s provocation…” Ryan had a good feeling about the manager, and he did not really want to make the security guard’s life more difficult than it already was. “Alright,” he said. He turned to the guard and gave him a stern look. “But next time, don’t be so judgmental!”   The manager clapped his hands and said, “Now that that is sorted out, let’s get you behind a set of wheels!” Ryan nodded and allowed the manager to lead him into the showroom. He picked out an Audi, and then he drove himself home. ***   Because Ryan did not have much money, he was forced to share an apartment with Sherry Smith, his landlady, who was hot. She had a curvy figure, and although she was a few years older than him, she had no boyfriend. Partially, this was because she spent all her time playing video games. Ryan thought her lifestyle was boring and unhealthy. When he arrived at the door, he heard a fierce argument going on inside the apartment. He heard a strange male voice say, “If you don’t pay 300 thousand dollars this month, I’ll take your apartment.” “That’s not possible!” Sherry cried. “How will I get so much money in such a short time? Could you please give me more time?” “That’s not my problem!” the man exclaimed. “Pay me or move out!” The door to the apartment slammed open. A stout man walked out, and a few men followed them. The stout man had a long dark red scar on his face. “Hey!” Ryan exclaimed. “What?” “You can come back for the money in twenty days,” Ryan replied. When Sherry heard this, she stepped out of the apartment. She gripped Ryan’s collar and yelled at him, “Quit talking bullshit!” “I’m not!” Ryan shouted back. “I live in this place. I won’t let anyone take it away!” The stout man nodded and said, “I will return for the money in 20 days.” Once they were gone, Sherry and Ryan went back into the apartment. They both sat on the sofa and she asked him, “Why did you say that? They’ll come back in 20 days, and when they do, we will be screwed!” Ryan placed his hand on her leg, gave it a squeeze, and said, “Don’t worry. I can handle it.”
