The Promise

"Sierra?” She blinked. The study came rushing back. Sebastian was still standing in front of her. They hadn't kissed. He hadn't touched her beyond their joined hands. Nothing had happened. Except inside her head. Her mind betrayed her. She quickly pulled her hand away. “You all right?” “Yes.” Her voice sounded breathless. Sebastian studied her. “You're shaking.” “I'm tired.” He didn't look convinced. She stepped backward. “I should go.” “Sierra.” She stopped. He looked at her for a long moment. “You don't have to be afraid of what you're feeling.” Her heart pounded. “I am.” “Why?” “Because I know where it leads.” He took a slow breath. “Maybe this time, you don't have to run.” Sierra looked at him. For one dangerous second, she wanted to tell him everything. Instead, she turned toward the door. “We need to find out the truth first.” Sebastian nodded. “Then that's what we'll do.” She paused. “Together?” His expression softened. “Together.” Sierra left the study. But as she walked upstairs, she couldn't stop thinking about the fantasy she had just created. Because the most frightening part wasn't that she had imagined Sebastian touching her. It was how desperately she had wanted the imagined version to become real. ---------- Sierra closed her bedroom door and leaned against it. Her heart was still racing. The memory of the study followed her upstairs—the way Sebastian had looked at her, the warmth of his hand around hers, and the quiet certainty in his voice when he told her she didn't have to run. And, most dangerously, the fantasy her mind had created. Sierra shut her eyes. *Maybe this time, you don't have to run.* She hated how much those words affected her. For three years, running had been her survival. She had run from Sebastian. From the Vale family. From the truth. Most of all, she had run from herself. Now she was living under the same roof as the man she had spent three years trying to forget. And somehow, instead of feeling trapped, she felt strangely at peace. That frightened her. She changed into her nightclothes and climbed into bed. For several minutes, she stared at the ceiling. Then she heard footsteps in the hallway. She held her breath. The footsteps stopped outside her door. Silence. A second later, they continued down the hallway. Sierra exhaled. Sebastian. She turned onto her side and pulled the blanket closer. --- The next morning, Sierra walked into the kitchen to find Sebastian already there. He was standing by the counter, pouring coffee. He looked up. “Good morning.” “Morning.” His eyes lingered on her for a second longer than necessary. Sierra immediately looked toward the coffee machine. “Is that mine?” “I made it.” She frowned. “How did you know how I take it?” A faint smile appeared. “I remember.” She accepted the cup. Their fingers brushed. It was barely a touch. Still, Sierra felt it all the way to her chest. She pulled her hand away. “Thank you.” “You're welcome.” Silence settled between them. Not uncomfortable. Just full of things neither of them was saying. Sebastian finally broke it. “I spoke to security.” Sierra's expression changed. “About the man?” “Yes.” “And?” “They found something.” He handed her a folder. Sierra opened it. Inside were copies of old company records. Her eyes moved across the pages. One name appeared repeatedly. Victor Hale. She looked up. “Who is he?” “My father's former chief of security.” Her stomach tightened. “Former?” “He resigned three years ago.” “After I left?” “Three weeks after.” Sierra stared at the document. “That can't be a coincidence.” “I don't think it is.” She looked at him. “What happened to him?” “He disappeared.” “Disappeared?” Sebastian nodded. “No forwarding address. No contact information. Nothing.” Sierra slowly closed the folder. “He's the man who approached me.” Sebastian's jaw tightened. “You're sure?” “I'll never forget his face.” He stepped closer. “Then we're going to find him.” Sierra shook her head. “No.” He looked at her. “Why?” “Because whoever sent him to me doesn't want us to find him.” “Exactly.” “Sebastian, this is dangerous.” “So is doing nothing.” She looked away. “I don't want you getting hurt.” He was quiet. Then he said softly: “You've been saying that for three years.” Sierra looked at him. “I know.” “And I'm still here.” Her eyes softened. “So am I.” For a moment, they simply looked at each other. Something had changed. They weren't pretending anymore. Not completely. Sebastian stepped closer. “Sierra.” She swallowed. “Yes?” “Last night…” Her heart began pounding. “We said we would find the truth together.” “Yes.” “I want you to know something.” “What?” “Whatever we find, you're not facing it alone.” She nodded. “Together.” He smiled. “Together.” --- Later that afternoon, Sierra returned to her office. She tried to focus on work. But Sebastian's words stayed with her. You're not facing it alone. For the first time in three years, she believed him. Then her phone rang. Unknown number. Sierra stared at the screen. Her stomach tightened. She answered. “Hello?” Silence. Then a man's voice. “You should never have gone back to him.” Sierra froze. “Who is this?” “You know who I am.” Her blood ran cold. “Victor?” A quiet laugh came through the phone. “You remember me.” “What do you want?” “You were told to stay away from Sebastian.” Sierra stood. “Where are you?” “That doesn't matter.” “It does to me.” “No, Sierra.” His voice became colder. “What matters is that you listen this time.” Her grip tightened around the phone. “You threatened me once.” “And you listened.” “I was afraid.” “You should be again.” The line went dead. Sierra stood frozen. Then she noticed something on her desk. A small envelope. She hadn't seen it before. Her hands trembled as she opened it. Inside was a photograph. Sebastian. Leaving the Vale residence that morning. On the back, four words were written. You can't protect him. Sierra's blood ran cold. She immediately reached for her phone. She called Sebastian. He answered on the second ring. “Sierra?” “Where are you?” “At the office. Why?” She looked at the photograph again. “Don't leave.” A pause. “What happened?” “Someone is watching you.” His voice immediately changed. “Are you safe?” “I think so.” “Sierra—” “I found something.” “What?” She swallowed. “Victor Hale.” Silence. Then Sebastian said quietly: “I'm coming to you.” “No.” “I'll be there in ten minutes.” “Sebastian—” “I told you.” His voice softened. “We do this together.” The call ended. Sierra stared at the photograph. Three years ago, she had walked away because she believed distance would keep Sebastian safe. Now she finally understood the cruel truth. Distance hadn't protected him. It had only left them both vulnerable. And this time, she wasn't going to run. Not from Sebastian. Not from the truth. And not from the person who had spent three years believing he could control her. Because whatever happened next, Sierra Santillan was ready to fight back.
