From A Table Away

737 Words
I was running late for my stepbrother Steve's twenty-first birthday party as I rushed into his favorite restaurant. Everyone was already waiting, and his girlfriend, Angela, had been texting me for the last five minutes, wondering where I was. We were starting out at Bella Italia and then making our way down to a local club so he could get his first legal club drinks. After I went clubbing with my friends, I intended to go home where my boyfriend would be waiting for me. This was a big night for us. Kane King was the love of my life. I met him six months ago at work, and our courtship was a whirlwind. I knew things were different with our relationship from a normal one. We tried to fight our attraction to one another as long as we could, but our relationship was inevitable. There was too great of a connection between us for either of us to try to stay away from one another. Unfortunately, the man I dreamed about spending the rest of my life with already belonged to another. He was married. Tonight, he was finally asking Tracy for a divorce. While I hated being the other woman and the thought of breaking up a marriage, I loved him so much that I was selfish enough not to care. I wanted Kane, and I did not care whom it hurt for him to be with me. There were not any children involved, and he told me that things had been over between them for a long time now. He said they had both been miserable, and she would probably not be surprised that he was asking for a divorce. He assured me that everything would be all right and when my night with my friends was over, he would be waiting in my bed for me. As I came upon the table of my waiting friends, I could not contain the smile on my face. "Where have you been?" Angela asked, exasperated. "Sorry guys, I couldn't get away at work, and I had to stop by the apartment to get Steve's gift. I forgot it this morning." Everyone laughed, and I asked Angela to order me a glass of water with lemon while I went to the bathroom. On my way to the bathroom, I noticed a head full of bronze hair at a table to my right. I would know that hair anywhere. I ducked around the corner and kept myself hidden, but I could see everything and hear enough. My Kane was sitting there with a beautiful blonde woman. They were staring into each other's eyes and holding hands on top of the table. I could see her wedding ring as clear as day, and I knew without a doubt that this was Tracy They sure looked cozy for a couple that was on the brink of divorce. He certainly looked as if he still wanted to call her his and vice versa. Things could not be as bad as he made them out to be. He f*****g played me. However, the loving actions I saw between them wasn't what ripped at my heart the most…it was the words that I could hear even from where I was standing. "I do still love you, Tracy. Let's make this work, honey." "Oh Kane, I love you too." I was devastated, and I couldn't breathe as I made my way to the bathroom. I emptied the contents of my stomach into the nearest toilet and sobbed. How could he do this to me? He said he loved me. He was supposed to leave her. The scene I witnessed at that table was not one of a man leaving his wife. My phone vibrated in my pocket, and I pulled it out to read it as I sat on the bathroom floor trying to regain my composure. I'm sorry baby, something came up and they need me back at the hospital. I won't be able to make it tonight after all. I'll text you when I can. What a f*****g liar. He was going home with her…his wife. I was just his w***e on the side. No more…never again would I be that girl. I didn't care if I had to change hospitals, move away, change my name, it didn't matter. Whatever it would take, I was done with Kane King and his lies.
