I was reading a book when my phone began to ring and I glanced at the caller ID to see that it was my best friend, Gina.
"I GOT THE JOB!!" she shrieked over the phone, making me wince as I removed the phone from my ear.
I then put it back immediately. "Calm down G, you got the job?" I asked again with a smile.
I had totally forgotten about the job because of my wedding and the other events.
I and Gina had applied for jobs everywhere I could. I decided that since I wasn't going to inherit the family's company and I didn't want to work for Cara as she would humiliate me in any way possible, the only other option was to get a job.
All this was before I had this marriage shoved down my throat.
"Yesss," she screamed, excitedly.
"That's great news! I'm so happy for you," I said and realized that I hadn't checked my mail in almost a week.
"How about you?," she questioned from the other end of the line and I shook my head and then realized that she couldn't see me.
"No, I haven't had the time to check my mail—you know, with the marriage and all," I said as I quickly turned on my laptop and went to my email.
"You'll freak out when you hear which company called me for an interview," she said and I could feel her excitement from the other end of the line.
From the way she sounded, I knew it would be somewhere good and I couldn't wait to know.
"Where?," I questioned curiously.
"RCD tech!," she screamed and this time around, I joined her.
"OMG!!,that's like the fastest-growing tech company right now," I exclaimed, feeling happy and a bit jealous of her.
I had met Cara in my first year in college and we had stuck since then. She knew everything about my marriage to Richard and always called to console me from time to time.
"I hope I get hired by one company," I said, remembering how Richard had called me a waste of space as I had no job,no property, nothing whatsoever.
I kept scrolling through my mail and found something. I blinked rapidly, unable to believe what I was seeing. No way!!
"Okay, this is crazy!" I exclaimed, still unable to believe it.
"I got into RCD tech as well!" I screamed, jumping up.
We both screamed, chattering excitedly and it took us a while before we got back to our normal pitch of talking.
I was excited for a different reason. I would no longer be cooped up in this house like a waste of space as Richard called me.
The interview was tomorrow and all I had to do was to ace it.

"Next," A sultry feminine voice called out from the office opposite where we were seated.
I glanced at Gina and we exchanged a smile.
The next person, a young woman in her early twenties, rose up from the plush sofa with her sleek leather bag hanging from her shoulder.
She sauntered towards the door, her almost six inch heel, clicking against the polished marble floor.
Gina and I exchanged glances and I knew exactly what she was thinking. The woman looked like she wanted all the attention to herself.
I pressed my palms flat on my thighs in an attempt to straighten the crease on my black pencil skirt.
"Miss Harrington?," the feminine voice called out and I stood up, squinting my eyes as I wondered why she would single out my name. The other applicant wasn't even out yet.
I glanced at Gina and she shrugged. I had used my maiden name, not wishing to be associated with the Dowells.
Gina seemed to be equally as shocked as I was.
"Come over here, please," She said, and it took every ounce of courage in me to stand up and move to the door. I had a gnawing feeling that something was wrong.
It wasn't the room Where the other applicants entered, it seemed to be the secretary's office.
I knocked gently.
"Come in," she said gruffly.
I opened the door and forced a smile on the mean-looking woman.
"Good morning," I greeted and she didn't acknowledge but merely motioned me to sit down.
I looked at her expectantly and she seemed pissed. I couldn't help but wonder what was going on.
"I'm sorry to inform you, Miss Harrington but there was a mix-up in your invitation."
What did she mean by that? I suddenly began to panic. I couldn't risk losing this job, This was going to be my escape from that arrogant husband of mine.
"What mix-up?" I asked slowly, swallowing the lump in my throat. She couldn't possibly fire me, right?
"There was a mistake in your name.., the Interview was supposed to be sent to Miss May Harrington. Cecilia made a mistake with the invitation," She said and I felt my heart shatter into pieces.
I shook my head rapidly. "That cannot be! it can't. “Please!, I'm more than qualified for this job. I need to work!!, I have to work," I pleaded passionately.
I would do anything to avoid that arrogant jerk!
"I'm sorry Miss Harrington—I mean Miss April. My hands are tied here," She said firmly, pursing her lips.
"Please," I whimpered, feeling tears cloud my eyes.
She seemed to have noticed that as she shook her head sympathetically.
"I'm sorry, I really can't do anything to help you. This came directly from the CEO himself," she said and motioned for me to leave.
She dismissed me rudely but I didn't care, I would go on my knees if I have to, I was really that desperate.
I was about to leave and then stopped as I thought of something.
"Where would I find this CEO?," I spun around to face her and she hesitated for a while before she spoke.
"Last floor. I never told you anything."
I thanked her and she dismissed me with her hand and I hurriedly walked out of her office.
Gina looked at me with furrowed eyebrows. She probably wanted to know what was going on. I signaled to her that I would be back as I made my way to the elevator.
As soon as the elevator doors opened to the 14th floor, I felt very nervous and afraid. What if he tells the security to throw me out or he has me arrested for breaking and entering?
I walked to the tight-lipped brunette who seemed to be his secretary and she glared at me with disdain. I began to wonder why everyone here was hostile. Was it really worth it, working here?
"I am here to see the CEO," I said with confidence. I had read somewhere that if you talk confidently, the other person will feel intimidated and do whatever you ask.
She pushed her glasses to the rim of her nose as she glared at me. I swallowed hard under her scrutiny as I began to wonder if she had already found out that I had told a lie.
"He's expecting me," I quickly added and hoped that she would just tell me to go in.
"Your name," she barked and I almost jumped with fright.
I swallowed hard as I thought of using my husband's name or my maiden name.
"April Dowell."
She glared at me for a while as if she was thinking of something and I was scared that she already figured out I was lying.
She picked up the telephone and I started praying that he would not turn me away. I heard her tell him my name and that he was expecting me and I clasped my palms together, expecting her to yell at me to get out.
"Go in." She said, surprising me and I let out a breath I didn't even realize I had been holding.
I knocked on the door and heard a muffled "come in" As I walked in, the gnawing feeling returned and I couldn't help but wonder what exactly was going on.
The man had his back turned to me, but from his back, I could see that he would be a very attractive man, and his hair, his very dark hair, reminded me of my husband.
I cleared my throat quickly. This man was nothing like my arrogant, broke husband. This was a kind man who knew I was lying but still didn't turn me away.
"Hello sir, I—-"
I gasped, taking a step backward as the man spun the chair around, facing me.
There was my husband, in all his arrogant glory, sitting in my boss's chair.
"What—-"
My hands flew to my mouth as I saw it.
