49 It took much longer to recover than before. Dr. Mayer said that’s because this time I witnessed my own death. Even though Mrs. Mayer looked like death warmed over herself, she still tried to console me with water and hugs. “What was the point?” I asked them. “Why did I even have to have a life like that? It was horrible! It was all such a waste.” “There’s a purpose to each life,” Mrs. Mayer said gently, “no matter how tragic or short it seems. Mystics believe that with each incarnation, the soul takes on a new body to learn the specific lessons offered by that life. So it might switch genders, or skin colors, or be healthy one life and disabled the next—or abused, like you were. It all depends on what that particular soul needs to learn to progress further along in its journey.” I
