Mysterious Heroine

One week later, Emilia was managing the construction of the helicopter on the first floor. Long and hard metals were placed on the side and the frame of the helicopter is nearing its completion. To make sure that something won’t go wrong, she decided to spend most of her time here, overseeing the progress. During one week, nothing has happened yet. Most of the materials needed for construction are still on their way to the Theresa Institute of Engineering. Sometimes, she forgets to eat or even drink water as she gets excited about how close it is for a helicopter at this age to be introduced. Also, due to her excitement and not wanting to let her eyes away from it. She requested Michael to place a desk in the laboratory. In that way, she can oversee the progress and while drawing schematics about something that can be useful. Grinning in anticipation, Catarina joyously watched...Until she felt something cold kissed her face, startling her. “Oy...you’re not taking care of your own health. Here have some water.” It was Michael Pearce. His bright look and handsome features put her into a trance. “Thank you…” Emilia received a glass of water and drank it. Michael then sits beside her, watching the progress of the helicopter together. Sipping his water, Michael took a peek at Emilia’s bright face. He doesn’t know why he's doing that but the moment he lays his eyes on her, an indescribable feeling will surge within his body. It was a fleeting moment yet he was addicted to it. “Uhm...why are you looking at me...Sir Michael?” “...!” Michael averted, hiding his beet-red face. “Nothing, It’s just that...you you you you’re…bea...bea.” Stammering, Michael steeled himself. “Nevermind. I would love to discuss something with you.” “Discuss?” Emilia tilted her head to the side while producing a “hmm.” cutely. The way she produced it made Michael skip a beat. Why is she so cute? ‘No! Don’t fall in love with your apprentice.’ “Ahh...about the machine you built three days earlier. Why is it outside?” “Ah, you mean the Mond Process Setup? That’s the machine we need to modify and purify nickel for the turboshaft engine. The reason we built it outside is that it releases carbon monoxide and tetracarbonyl as waste products. Both are very toxic gases. You can say that the process is so fatal that even a gas mask could guard against it. When absorbed through the skin, it leads to a quick death.” “If that’s so dangerous, is there a possibility of a leak? I mean our materials can’t possibly contain it…” “Don’t worry.” Emilia said as she grabbed his hand, “Thanks to the materials you currently have, I manage to create stainless steel. That metal can contain poison. So don’t need to worry.” “Wait? Did you create it by yourself? You know it’s dangerous right?” Michael chided. “Of course I know the dangers, that's why I let the professional ironworkers do it. I’m not stupid you know.” “Ah...I see that’s good to know.” Michael felt slightly embarrassed, so he changed the topic. “What are you drawing now?” Emilia noticed his eyes looking at the blueprint she’s been working on. “Ah, this? This is a type of material that lets us find a certain ore. I plan to create it since we’re going to need a specific ore such as the Ilmenite Ore, Chrome Ore, Molybdenite, Pyrochlore Ore, and Nickel Ore.” Michael felt his brain was going to overload. As a prodigy who studied engineering and memorized all the ores, this is his first time hearing it. Thus, he pulled out a pocket note and wrote every word that was coming out of her mouth. “This is called the Geiger Counter. For that, we need a certain noble gas and we have just the machine needed to obtain it. Come with me!” Emilia’s eyes sparkled as she grabbed Michael by the arm. Michael was surprised, this is the first time of him getting dragged by someone. Instead of resisting and getting off her hand, he decided to go along with it. The feeling that is always occurring inside his body surged again. At one of the laboratory rooms with an open ceiling, Emilia showed him the machine. A cylindrical metal with hoses around it. He can’t understand the underlying mechanism or principle behind it. He hopes that Emilia will explain it to her. This machine is called a cryogenic air separation unit. This is used to obtain a noble gas called argon. Which will be used in Geiger Counter.” Emilia walked towards it and began to work. Holding something, Emilia began to explain like teaching a kid a lesson. “Okay first step is this machine will cool the air to extract the gas called argon in the air from the atmosphere. Once argon is trapped in this glass tube...I simply apply high voltage…” Before she can continue, Emilia notices Michael’s face, unable to follow. “Well, let’s forgo the details, and let’s have a demonstration.” Emilia slung the device behind her and picked the Geiger Counter. She waved it over some rocks that were already there for her to demonstrate. Then seconds later. Geer geer geer. It was an eerie screeching sound that made Michael cover his ears. “Hey what’s that sound?” “Come over here!” Emilia beckoned. Michael joined her as Emilia showed her the readings of the Geiger Counter. “Observe this pulse. Our gas has suddenly become conductive...thanks to the radioactive elements from the minerals.” Michael's eyes widened. His face turned pale. “Radioactive? Hey...does that mean…” “It’s pretty safe...Sir Michael. There’s no need to worry.” Emilia chuckled. “You sure sound confident huh? It's common sense that radioactive materials are harmful.” “I know...but it won’t hurt if it’s a little.” “You...how can you build things that are unknown in this world?” Michael asked suspiciously. “It’s not unknown, it was not just discovered. Everything in our world, every treasure is to be opened by us, humans.” “But it doesn’t explain how you…” “Let’s just say I’m a noble lady who has a great interest in science. Most of my knowledge is gained from books, there’s nothing mysterious about it.” “...” As expected, Michael, who is a prodigy and a genius, would certainly doubt her. But it doesn’t matter. She has a bet to win and if she were to play this carefully, she might end up losing the battle. “Let’s return back to the laboratory,” Michael suggested. … One week later. Thanks for the materials imported around the world and the machines she had in this facility. They finished building the turboshaft engine. “So this is it huh?” Michael peered over the turboshaft engine. It was completely different from the current engines that they are commonly using in aircraft. “Yes, this is it. This turboshaft engine is the main power of our helicopter. I have written the manual on how it works so please read it.” Emilia said, her eyes sparkling with joy. “Then now that the engine is completed...what’s next?” “Well, we’re going to place it on our helicopter. And after that voila...we have our first prototype helicopter!” Meanwhile, Michael is having something. ‘How could she do it.’ Michael was thrown into confusion. ‘Have she ever had an experience building this before?’ But there’s no way that little girl had a field experience. ‘Or is she really a…genius?’ Such a thing sometimes appears in this world. A rare gift beyond age and experience. Just like the Great Alchemist Fleming, Tesla, who renewed the foundation of medicine and engineering 100 years ago. ‘I don’t know. I don’t know. That girl is a real genius?’ Michael sighed. The prejudice he had that an aristocrat lady came to this facility out of interest had slowly disappeared. He was just confused by the girl’s appearance that was beyond common sense. “Well, sir. What should I do now?” After she introduced the turboshaft engine, Emilia asked. “There is no more special schedule today. Go back home.” “Yes, thank you for your hard work. See you tomorrow.” She greeted her and turned around. But it was then. “Wait, Emilia.” “Yes?” “…… ” Michael hesitated for a long time, didn’t talk immediately. “Teacher?” When Emilia looked puzzled, he said in an awkward voice. “…I’m so sorry.” “What?” “I’ve been prejudicing you and was being lazy.” “……!” The unexpected apology embarrassed her. “Oh, no, sir.” “No. I think I misunderstood you just by looking at the outside. I’m sorry.” Contrary to his initial impression, the girl is not just a noble lady. “Let’s do well in the future anyway.” She smiled at the sincere apology. “No, sir. I’ll work hard from now on, so please take care of me.” Michael smiled heartily. ‘Well listening to her while demonstrating her inventions made me look small. But I’m glad that I met her even if it’s just two weeks. I learned a lot from her. It feels like I have nothing left to teach her. She might be more genius than I am.'  Michael silently clicked his tongue, "Just who is this Lady?" … A few days later in the Weisburg Palace. In the palace where the Emperor resided, two men were having a conversation. It was Emperor Winchester von Granzreich and his doctor, Baron Julius. “Your Majesty, how are you feeling now?” “I don’t know if I’m getting better. Even after a good sleep, I still feel tired.” Julius lowered his head at what he said. “I apologize. It is because I am lacking.” “No. I’m riddled with a horrid disease. How is that your fault? If you are lacking, then all the doctors in the empire must put their stethoscopes back down.” The Emperor spoke softly. Baron Ben was one of the greatest doctors in the Royal Cross Hospital. If he didn’t know, no one in this empire would. ‘Since not even doctors can treat everyone. Even if medical knowledge has advanced.’ Although it had improved, there were still limits. He didn’t want to hold his physician at fault for that. ‘It must be karma.’ The Emperor had a bitter face. It thought that it might be because the heavens were punishing him. But it was then… Someone who had been silently listening to their conversation spoke. It was the Crown Prince, Eins von Granzreich. “Do you really not know?” “I apologize, your highness. I’m trying my best but…” The Crown Prince frowned and thought of his conversation with Catarina. “Then have you heard of this disease?” “Which disease?” “Last time, someone said that if something called blood sugar increased in the Emperor’s body it would have similar symptoms to this, have you heard about it?” “…!!!” Baron Julius’s eyes widened. “The concentration of sugar in blood? Are you talking about the breaking down of carbohydrates?” “I think so. Do you not know?” “…!!!” The physician had an expression like he had just been smacked. The Emperor and Crown Prince were confused at his reaction. “What’s wrong?” But Ben didn’t answer the Crown Prince. He didn’t have the mind to. ‘Now that I think about it…the Francoine Republic released an article about this…and the symptoms were similar to the Emperor’s…! Heavens!’ The Emperor’s symptoms flashed through his head. Tiredness, polyuria…! It was exactly like the symptoms in the paper! ‘How…did I miss something like this?’ It was probably because it was a paper from another land. “Diabetes mellitus.” The Emperor and the Crown Prince had strange faces. “What is it, Julius?” Julius burst up from his seat. “Please forgive me, Your Majesty, I think I need to study this diagnosis that the Crown Prince spoke about!” And as he was about to rush out of the room, he asked the Crown Prince a question. “Your Highness! Who is the doctor that told you about this diagnosis? They must most definitely be a famous doctor! I must speak about this with that person..” “…” The Emperor and the Crown Prince looked baffled. Famous doctor? That child? Isn’t she supposed to be an engineer? “Does the diagnosis I’m talking about really have something to do with Father’s symptoms?” “Yes, I’ll have to confirm to make sure, but there’s definitely a chance. But who told you? This is something that was recently only announced by the Francoine Republic, so there are probably only about 22 people including me in the whole empire who knows about this.” “…” It was a difficult diagnosis that only 20 people knew? The Crown Prince narrowed his eyes and spoke. “They’re not a well-known doctor. The person that told me was…” But it was then. The Emperor smiled and cut him off. “Does it matter who told me? Go research it and fix me.” Baron Julius thought something was suspicious because he was trying to hide it, but he bowed his head. “I will, Your Majesty! Please wait a bit!” And when he arrived back in his office, he tilted his head in confusion. ‘Why is he trying to hide it? If it’s someone that knows about this, not only are they well-versed in our knowledge, but also the knowledge of the republic. He thought about this while pulling out the paper. ‘There’s not a lot of doctors in the capital who know that much anyway. It’s probably someone I know.’ First, the professors in the Royal Cross Hospital where he was the director. Since all the talented doctors in the empire were here, it was possible. ‘No. We had several conferences about this, but no one spoke about this at all. Then is it someone from Rosemaine Hospital?’ It was a high-end hospital that treated nobles. But he shook his head. ‘No. Those fools only take money. Not a single one of them is actually interested in medicine.’ And the last possibility popped up in his head. ‘It’s more likely that… there are skilled doctors in Therese Hospital.’ Overall, the skills of the doctors fell behind other hospital’s. But was it because there were a lot of patients? There were a lot of talented doctors. ‘Director Gouge probably knows about this diagnosis. And the young genius Artem that I met probably knows this too. I must ask about this next time. He knew about his skills very well. So he knew that it was too much for him to treat the Emperor by himself. He wanted to discuss diabetes with the doctor that had guessed it. ‘They are most definitely an incredible doctor. Just who is it?’
