From the Therese Hospital

2100 Words
It was because of Catarina’s referral and the miraculous condition of the patient. There wasn’t a name on the referral, so all the doctors tried to figure out who had done that unbelievable surgery. ... “Just what is this?” The director of the Royal Cross Hospital and royal physician, Baron Julius, had an unbelieving face. “How was this surgery performed?” He looked at the referral. The paper was crinkled because he read it so many times. ‘Unbelievable.’ The handwriting was horrible. Like children had scribbled on it. But the information it contained shocked him into awe. ‘They really did this surgery?’ It was unbelievable, but there was living proof. The servant, Bruno, had lived after being shot directly in the spleen. ‘I barely listened to the Crown Prince when he explained the shooting.’ The Crown Prince had a simple explanation. That his servant had been shot in the spleen, and that they had treated him in the Teresa Hospital so they should come to take him to treat him. But there was no way he would still be alive if he was really shot in the spleen, so it had probably missed and probably hit another location…but that wasn’t the case. ‘Even with special treatment, it’s hard. It says so in Count Graham’s studies as well.’ Count Graham’s studies were like the bible to the doctors. ‘Sure if they did it as it says on this referral, it’s definitely possible. He might have problems with his immune system, but that’s a problem for when the patient survives.’ He immediately realized the significance of this referral. It wasn’t a simple referral, but something all the doctors of the empire should share. ‘Of course, knowing it and doing it is another problem.’ How many doctors would be able to do surgery this difficult? Even he wasn’t confident in it. ‘Maybe if I take it slowly I can, but this is emergency surgery. Would I be able to do it in time before the patient dies from severe bleeding?’ He shook his head. He wasn’t confident. ‘Just who is this doctor?’ He wondered if this was the same doctor who had figured out the Emperor’s illness. ‘I must look into it right away' He headed for Therese Hospital. … The Therese Hospital was built in the honor of Therese Eisenberg, who wanted to be a nurse. Her love for science made her build two facilities that greatly helped the nation, such as the Therese Institute of Engineering and Therese Hospital. It was also the biggest hospital in the Empire and had the largest facility. One thing special about it is that they treat the commoners free of charge. The royal physician Julius and the director of Teresa Hospital, Gauche, were close friends after graduating from the same academy. “Julius? What’s a busy man like you doing at this lowly hospital?” Ben shook his head. “Lowly? How can you say the hospital doing the most beautiful works in the entire empire is lowly? Have you been well?” “I’m always not doing well, as you know. The hospital is about to go bankrupt any moment, don’t you know? Look at my hair loss.” “The Eisenberg family is supporting whatever you lack, aren’t they? The chancellor is really amazing. He made a hospital for homeless people with personal funds” Baron Julius’s voice was filled with respect. It was true. The founder of this hospital was Catarina’s father, Marquis Nix. He was doing it all by himself. “You’re right, he’s really a respectable man. Wouldn’t he be the definition of noblesse oblige?” The director hadn’t met the Marquis too many times. It was because he didn’t show himself at the hospital too often. Gauche thought it was maybe because he didn’t want others to know he supported the hospital. It wasn’t just the doctors of the Therese Hospital who respected him. The Berlun citizens, and other people who knew. There wasn’t a single person who didn’t admire the chancellor. ‘Some people say this is only possible because he’s rich.’ It was true. Since the Eisenberg family was one of the richest in the empire. But everyone knew. Just because you were rich didn’t mean you could do this. Rather, there were more people who tried to get more money because they had it. The Eisenberg family was the most respected noble family in the empire. “Have some coffee. But why are you here?’ The scent of arabica coffee wafted up. But Julius didn’t touch it at all and asked with an excited face. “I have something to ask you.” “What?” “Just who is it? The doctor that did ‘that surgery?’ It’s not you, is it?” “What are you talking about? What surgery? Say it so I can understand.” “That surgery! The splenectomy!” But Baron Gauche just squinted in confusion. “Splenectomy? Cutting of the spleen? What are…?” “What? You don’t know?” “Know what?” Ben gaped. He didn’t know a miracle had occurred in his hospital! “Look at this!” What he held out was a referral. “What’s this?” “Just read it quickly!” Gauche pulled out his glasses at his friend’s urging. “Just what is this? And why is it so sloppy? Not even a child’s scribbles…Wait…” And suddenly, he stopped talking. He was a well-known doctor in the field. And he understood what the referral contained. “How about it? Isn’t it miraculous?” “I saw it well so take it back now.” “What’s up with that reaction? Aren’t you surprised?” But Gauche just had a hard expression. “It’s a lie.” “What?” “You’re believing the nonsense written on this paper?” “…!” Gauche clicked his tongue. “The theory is nice. If a patient with a bleeding spleen comes in, it’s worth a try. But…there’s now a way a surgery like that is possible. I don’t know who it is, but they wrote it pretty well.” Julius firmly replied. “It’s not a lie.” “What?” “It’s real, my friend. This patient is in our hospital! He was hit with a bullet and is perfectly alive right now!” “What…are you talking about?” Gauche spoke like he didn’t understand. Julius frustratedly answered him. “It’s true! And at your hospital! I already confirmed it. Who was it? The one that did this miraculous surgery?” Gote thought of the report he had received some time ago. ‘There was a patient with a bullet wound a while ago, right? And the person with him had the insignia of the Imperial Palace so after emergency surgery, he was moved to the Imperial Cross Hospital.’ He remembered the patient because the person with him was an important person. “Is the patient’s name…Bruno?” “Yes, Sir Bruno! He was shot directly on the spleen and couldn’t live, but your hospital saved him.” Gauche gaped. Was the nonsensical theory on the paper true? “Who’s the doctor that led the surgery?” To make sure, Gauche read the scribbles again and noticed something at the end of the paper. It was an abbreviation, T.I.E. “Oy...Julius, are you sure that this surgery was performed in our hospital?” “Huh? What do you mean by that? Of course, I am, do you think that I can’t read? Or my sight is not that good? It’s written at the end of the paper, T.H.” Hearing that, Gauche now knew that he was mistaken, he deeply sighs. “You know...you may not notice it because of the bad handwriting but it's T.I.E. Meaning it was performed in the Therese Institute of Engineering.” Baron Julius almost spat out the coffee he was sipping, his face was bewildered. “What? What nonsense is that? Isn't that a place for engineers and architects? How come that the surgery was performed there?” “I believe that it has a clinic, maybe it was performed there.” Baron Julius gaped at his words, “Outrageous! You may be right but there’s no way that there is a renowned doctor there that can perform such a surgery?” … “Excuse me…” Someone entered the door. They both turned their heads and saw the young handsome man carrying files. He has dark blue hair, a sharp gaze, and has good looks wearing a white coat. “Oh...it’s Artem.” “I’ve come here to deliver these files to you. Those are the patient reports and financial reports.” “Oh...thank you.” Baron Julius was still in the middle of confusion, if the surgery was not performed here, and who performed it? The man on the top of the list was this man in front of them. Still, he has to make sure that this surgery was not performed here. “Uhm...Artem, did you perform a splenectomy?” “Splenectomy?” Artem frowned, “Did someone perform such an impossible surgery?” Judging by his answers, Julius inwardly sighed, Artem was not the one who performed it. Meaning, it has been performed in the Therese Institute of Engineering. “Someone just performed a splenectomy at the Crown Prince’s guard and it was successful. I’m here to find out who that is and came here thinking that the surgery was performed here.” Artem’s eyes widened, “Successful? Was it a success? Who is the person who performed the surgery? I know plenty of doctors who are good in their field but I don’t think that they can perform it.” “There is no name, that’s why I’m going to go to Therese Institute of Engineering to investigate,” Julius said. “Therese Institute of Engineering? Do you mean that there’s a doctor that performed a splenectomy there?” “Look at this…” Gauche handed a referral letter to Artem. “It’s a step-by-step procedure by the doctor who performed the surgery. And the abbreviation at the end of the letter is the place where it was performed. Artem perused the paper and was shocked again. “This is magnificent! I want to see this doctor…” “Well, you can come with me if you like.” “Sir, is that okay?” Artem asked Gauche. “Do what you like.” “Thank you.” And thus the two departed and headed towards the Therese Institute of Engineering. … At the Therese Institute of Engineering, Artem and Julius arrived in front of the main gate and entered. At the reception hall, they asked the receptionist. “Good afternoon, I’m from the Royal Cross Hospital and this man is from Therese Hospital. We’re here to find the doctor who performed the surgery.” … Meanwhile, fifteen minutes later, someone entered Catarina's office. “Emilia, you’re being summoned to the director’s office. Come with me immediately.” Without question, Emilia rose to her feet and headed towards the director’s office. The director’s office is located in the middle of the professor’s office. Catarina didn’t know the reason for her being summoned, maybe it was because of her inventions. They might’ve found something of value in the machine and want to earn from it. Well, Catarina was ready for that, if someone wants her machine, then they can just buy it from her. Escorted by the guard, she arrived at the door. She can hear a voice of discomfort from inside. And when she entered...Catarina was surprised by the person next to Michael. It was the royal physician Baron Julius. As the past empress, she definitely knew who he was. Like this life, she was weak in her past life, and Baron Julius had treated her every time. ‘Wait. I met him in this life too.’ When she was younger, she was treated in Rosedale Hospital, but she had received treatment at the Royal Cross Hospital as well. So she had met the director, Baron Julius. And the man beside him was a young man wearing a white coat. He is handsome. Is he an engineer? Probably not, she had never seen this man before, but he seems to be accompanying Sir Julius. Is he a doctor? Catarina looks at Sir Julius. ‘What if he recognizes me?’ Baron Julius was looking at her in surprise.
