CHAPTER 5

1046 Words
Jessica I stood there on the dimly lit street, the deafening silence that followed my brother's car disappearing into the night left a gaping void in my chest. I turned to face Alfred, who stood beside me, his expression surprisingly regretful given his domineering demeanor. "Alfred, you had no right to drop such a bombshell on them," I hissed, my voice trembling with frustration. "I mean, I knew this was a crazy idea, but this... this is beyond insane!" He ran a hand through his chestnut hair, an exasperated sigh escaping his lips. "Jessy, I honestly didn't think it would hurt them that much. I thought they'd be shocked, sure, but I didn't expect that kind of reaction." My anger still simmered, but his remorse seemed genuine. "Well, you should've thought about that before blurting it out like that. And I can't believe you didn't even warn me." He winced, the weight of my anger bearing down on him. "I'm sorry. I should've told you before we came here, but I just wanted to get it over with." "Get it over with?" I snapped back, my emotions close to the surface. "We just turned our lives upside down with this insanity. We're in this mess together now, whether we like it or not." Alfred reached out and gently cupped my face, his touch surprising me with its tenderness. "Jessy, I promise we'll make this work. We're in this together, okay?" I couldn't deny that there was something oddly comforting in his words. The chaos surrounding us, while frustrating, had an element of unity. But I pushed his hand away and took a step back, unwilling to give in to the emotional turmoil. "I need some time to think, Alfred. I can't believe any of this is happening," I said, my voice softer, a reflection of the turmoil within me. Alfred looked at me with an offer of a ride home, his tone more gentle than I had anticipated given our tumultuous evening. "Jessy, can I just take you home? It's late, and I don't want you walking alone." I hesitated for a moment, the gravity of our situation still weighing heavily on my shoulders. "No, I think I need some time to clear my thoughts, Alfred. A walk might help." He nodded, respecting my choice, and there was a fleeting moment of vulnerability in his eyes. He reached out, and before I could react, his lips met mine. The kiss was a surprise, and I froze for a moment. My lips tingled from the unexpected contact, and it was as if, for that brief moment, everything that had transpired seemed to fade into the background. Deep down, I was torn. I knew our impulsive decision had been born out of desperation, yet the consequences were all too real. I needed to find a way to make my family understand, to make them see that this crazy plan was our only option. My journey back home was a labyrinth of thoughts, a maze of emotions. My mother's health was deteriorating, our family's business was crumbling, and now this hastily forged marriage with Alfred. “Oh no…” I muttered When I finally arrived at our doorstep, I couldn't help but think about what lay ahead. It was a mess, and I had no idea where to even begin. My mother's frail health had reached a critical point, our family's business teetered on the edge of collapse, and now the addition of this marriage to Alfred was a knot too tangled to unravel. As I walked through the door, my brother and sister were sitting in the living room, their faces etched with a mix of anger and confusion. Gemina's voice was the first to break the uneasy silence, her words filled with a quiver of frustration. "What just happened, Jessy?" she demanded, her eyes searching for an explanation. I took a deep breath and sat down, feeling the weight of their gazes on me as I prepared for an excruciating conversation. "I need you both to understand that there's a reason behind what happened tonight. It's complicated, but it's the only way to save our family." Andy's face was a tumultuous sea of anger and confusion. "Jessy, you need to start explaining, and it better be good." I pleaded with them, my voice a delicate balance of uncertainty and determination. "Please, let me tell Mom about this myself. I promise I'll explain everything when the time is right. Just trust me on this, okay?" Their eyes bore into mine, still searching for answers and understanding. Gemma blurted. “We can’t keep mute when we don’t know what’s going on. We need to know what we’re agreeing to, else, mum would have to hear it.” "Listen, I know you're both struggling to understand why I did this," I began, my voice unwavering despite the unease in my heart. "But there's a reason behind it, a reason that, I promise, will become clear in time." Gemina's eyes were filled with frustration. "Jessy, it's not just about understanding. It's about trust and honesty. We're your family, and we deserve to know." Andy, though still angry, softened a bit. "She's right, Jessy. We're in this together, and secrets won't help us now." I took a deep breath, trying to find the right words. "I'm asking you to trust me. I promise that the truth will be revealed soon, just give me some time to wrap my head around the situation." A heavy silence enveloped us as my siblings exchanged meaningful glances, their eyes almost shouting, "TELL US!" We had reached an uneasy consensus, albeit reluctantly. The decision to reveal the secret of our marriage to my mother was mine to make, I need to study what mood she’s in before revealing it to her. I understood that, sooner or later, I'd have to confide in them, but there were preparations to be made. My phone buzzed, interrupting my contemplation, and I retrieved it to find a message from Alfred. "Tomorrow at 5pm, we're meeting my family. Be ready. I'll pick you up myself, and you can't say no. After all, you're my wife now *smiles*." "That jerk!" I muttered under my breath, a surge of frustration welling up inside me.
