Chapter 3

Aurora POV The three men stride back into the cafe with empty hands. I c**k my head to the side in confusion. They come up to the counter. "Four Irish Cold Brews." The main man states but with a nudge from the guy on his right, he adds. "Please." "Was there a problem, sir?" He shakes his head in disappointment. "It was not good." The three of them laugh a little bit, but to me, it comes off kind of strange. Their whole demeanor seems to have changed since walking in here. When Charlotte and Marie were here, they were kind of rude and maybe even a bit aggressive. Now, they're laughing? "Do you mind making us your Irish Cold Brew from the day before?" The man on the right says with a light twinkle in his eyes. Oh, that's kind of new. "Uhm.. sure." I say and I turn around to start working on it. "I'm sorry if we made you uncomfortable yesterday." The main man says. "Something about you just seems very familiar, that's all." I shrug. "It's fine." I work carefully and make sure I copy the steps I did yesterday to their liking. "Are you usually alone here at this hour?" The brown haired one on the left asks, not in a creepy manner, but seems like a question to fill the void. "Just because, we have another day in town and we didn't really like the other coffee in town or the ones the other two girls made for us." "Usually the owner is here." I don't tell them it's my last day. It's none of their business. Plus, I want to make sure that I get out of here without alerting anyone when I am in and out of town unless necessary. June knows it's my last day tomorrow, but she doesn't know why. "Jean, right?" The main man asks me with a charming smile that fills his two dimples. I nod. "Thank you Jean for the coffee yesterday. Our boss was going to rampage until he got some of that Cold Brew. You saved our ass." "I'm glad it helped."I give them a shy smile and the main guy responds with a wide grin while the other two give me polites ones in return. Okay, are they on something? Their eyes grey over and they seemingly have a conversation with themselves. I focus on the coffee making and make sure I don't lose focus. "How much do we owe you?" The main man asks as I put out their cold brews in front of them. I blank. Is it free? "Oh, uhm. I'm not too sure." I respond softly. The three of them take a massive chug of the coffee before moaning in pleasure. "Oh, that's amazing." The guy on the right says. "You know what, it's on the house." I say politely. To be honest, I just want them to leave. I'll even pay for their drinks out of my own tips if that is what it will cost. "No. No. I don't want to get you into any trouble." The main guy says and opens up his wallet to pull out a small stack of 500 euros and hands it to me. "For your troubles." I shake my head lightly. He frowns, but I just point to the 50 he has in his wallet. The guy pulls out the 50 and hands it to me. I ring it up and then give him his change. "Keep it." He gives me a wide grin. "For saving my ass two days in a row." Giving me a cheers with his coffee cup, they all leave promptly. Well, that was strange. Shake it off, Aurora. You have to pull yourself together. For the next hour or so, I get the usual slow rush and June finally comes rolling around five minutes before we close. I have already cleaned up everything and grabbed my tips. Once she arrives, she starts to count the money in the register. When she is sure that everything is in place, she gives me a crude look. "It's very disrespectful to leave like this. You need to stay on until after the New Years." She lectures me. "I'm very sorry June, but I told you from the beginning that I just wanted a job for three months." I give her a reluctant smile as she shakes her head at me. Dropping my key on the counter next to her and the apron they gave me, I put on my big puffer jacket and grab my tote bag to leave the cafe. I have much to do for the remainder of the day, making sure I have enough water in the truck and gas in the tank. Treading back to my van in the midst of the forest, I think back to three men that came in with such a carefree attitude. Maybe it's because they think I am human and therefore hold no threat to them. The first time they came in, it was like June expected them to come in. She stood there and watched me make the drinks, so maybe they were tense about that, another werewolf being there and making them a drink. This time around, Charlotte and Marie are also werewolves, so maybe they were skeptical and held that demeanor towards them because of it. Either way, it's not a problem for me any longer. They said they were staying another day here, so I will have a day's head start. What else could go wrong? Enzo POV Sipping this second cup of coffee today, I grunt in approval and I hear my Beta Finn sigh out in relief. Going back to my papers and plans as I try to work out some type of compromise with this pack that we are meeting tonight. It's simple enough to be honest, but there's something that nags on the back of my mind about this. "Enzo, chill out." Finn tells me as he plops down on the sofa of our hotel room. I let out a disgruntled growl and he puts his hands up in defense. "The deal is as good as done." "Anyone feel like that human girl was kind of off?" One of my soldiers and close friend, Tomas asks. I ignore him, I wasn't even there and I can't be bothered by some human girl they met at the coffee shop. There's seriously so much to do and I am f*****g sick of losing people to that bastard. "I think she was just shy." Henrik says before shrugging. "She's pretty though, maybe I'll take her back here tomorrow, if you know what I mean." He jokes before shaking his head and then a shudder escapes him. That doesn't go unnoticed by the other two. "Second thoughts?" Finn smirks at Henrik. The two of them are generally down for anything. And I do mean anything. I have seen Finn run all way to Russia and back on a dare. Paving through enemy fire like that just for a thrill when we were teenagers, he's always had more courage than I have seen out of anyone. "I don't know. Something just feels.." Henrik's face morphs into a squirmish one. That's different. "It's probably just because she's so standoffish." Finn suggests. "You're used to them throwing themselves at you." "Yeah, well, she probably makes the best coffee I have ever had." Tomas points out. "I'm down to head there tomorrow before we leave?" He suggests and the others take a happy sip of their coffee to nod in agreeance before turning to take a look at me, waiting for my approval. "Do what you want." I edit some words on this document and put together everything we need. "Enzo, seriously. Why are you so tense? We are practically on vacation." Finn gleams. "This isn't a vacation." I put the pen abruptly on the table and lean back into my chair. "One mistake could get us all killed." "They're just rumors. There's no way the Lightwood Pack would switch sides now. They have been loyal allies for decades." I huff out a growl. "A lot of things can change in a couple of decades." I grit out and Finn rolls his eyes at me. "You need to relax. Let's go out tonight! These French she-wolves are not so bad looking." He wiggles his eyebrow at me and I just shake my head. "You guys go." He frowns immiediately. "Leave us." I hear Finn say to the other two. Both of them take their leave, doing who knows what outside the door of this hotel room. The moment they leave, Finn tries to argue with me, but I beat him to it. I'm not in the mood to argue today. "Don't." "I'm your best friend and your Beta. You are so tightly wound that you are going to explode. I don't want another incident. Do you?" I shake my head at him and finally peel my eyes away from the screen. "When we are back in our territory, I will go out, but not here." Releasing a menacing growl, Finn is not in the slightest effected. "Your mood swings are going to kill me." "You mean kill your vibe." I smirk at him, but he just looks annoyed. "I'm just saying it wouldn't hurt if you bone some chick here." Crossing my arms, I lean back into the chair yet again. This is not the first time we have had this conversation and I sincerely doubt it's going to be the last. "Bone some chick?" I reiterate and gawk at him. "Okay, you know what I mean." He stands from his seat on the couch and comes over the opposite side of the desk I am sitting at. Pouring out a glass of whiskey, I look to see the time. It's barely past 3 PM. c*****g an eyebrow at him, he just pushes the glass forther into my direction. Whatver. "Let's just focus on getting out of here, okay?" I clink my glass to his and we swallow our drinks in one go. Definitely going to need something stronger for tonight. They're having some type of big formal ball tonight because of our arrival and I would honestly rather not go. I've seen enough of these to fill a lifetime. But the pack here is hosting our conference with the Lightwood Pack. The Lightwoods are an old pack with French roots. They are one of the larger werewolf packs, not lycan. Though we have been allies with them for the past couple of decades, a treaty signed by my great-grandfather, that treaty is waivering. "They wouldn't dare pull some stunt here tonight." Finn attempts to reassure me, but I am hardly convinced. It's that brand new Alpha they have, spoiled little f*****g brat. Alpha Will. "We'll see." Again, I go back to preparing for what I need to tonight. Finn may be right that their pack might not risk breaking this treaty, that doesn't mean their stupid Alpha won't. "Can you believe Will actually won out as Alpha?" Finn shakes his head with some disappointment. I don't blame him. Will's older brother, Derrick was Alpha, but Will challenged him for the title and killed him in the process, per traditional rules. Though that's usually not so common nowadays. He didn't have to kill Derrick to win the challenege. That's what worries me. Why now? "It's a shame." That's all I say to Finn. He knows perfectly well how I feel about Will. He's not exactly the brightest tool in the shed, always hot headed. Derrick was actually fair and calm. "Are you still mad about what happened three years ago?" I glare up at him. He blows out a whistle. "I will take that as a yes." "Wouldn't you be?" He takes another hard liquored drink before changing the subject. "I'm taking bets that Derrick couldn't kill his little brother and Will used that to his advantage." He says to me and I nod, sort of listening to him. When he feels that I am no longer engaging in the conversation, he too leaves the room, leaving me to myself. I take a sip of the coffee on my desk. Hm. Whoever that human girl is, she really can make a decent cup of coffee. Nonetheless, I look to the screen to the surveillance I have on the Lightwood Pack's Alpha and the pack here in Toulouse. There's something going on here and I'm willing to bet my life it has something to do with this shady son of a b***h.
