Chapter 4 -The Floating City

The journey to Aetherhold took them longer than expected. What the clothing vendor had called “two days” stretched into three because of detours to avoid patrols and the time spent learning to control their unpredictable powers. By the time the massive floating city came fully into view, the group was exhausted, hungry, and running on pure determination. Aetherhold was breathtaking. Dozens of enormous islands hovered at different heights in the sky, connected by glowing crystal bridges, vine elevators, and cascading waterfalls that turned into mist before they ever touched the ground below. Towering spires of white stone and shimmering crystal rose from the central islands, catching the light of the twin moons and the single sun that had finally risen. Flying creatures — some bird-like, others resembling elegant dragons no bigger than horses — moved between the islands carrying riders or cargo. “How are we supposed to get up there?” Finn asked, shielding his eyes as he stared upward. Rowan pointed to a series of massive vine platforms rising slowly from the ground like living elevators. “Looks like public transport. But we’ll need to be careful. This place is probably crawling with guards.” Aria nodded. “We go in as travelers looking for information. Stay close. Keep your powers hidden unless absolutely necessary.” They joined a line of merchants, travelers, and locals waiting for the next ascent platform. Their new clothes from Lunara’s Crossing helped them blend in, though Finn still looked a little too excited and Mira kept glancing at every shadow. The ascent was smooth and surreal. The vine platform rose gently, powered by what looked like natural magic flowing through glowing runes carved into the vines. As they climbed higher, the wind grew stronger and cooler. Finn instinctively created a small shield of air around the group to stop them from shivering. When they stepped onto the main city island, the noise and energy hit them like a wave. Markets floated on smaller platforms connected by bridges. Scholars in flowing robes hurried between towering libraries. Guards in silver and blue armor patrolled the streets, but unlike the dark purple cloaks of the Veilbreaker’s followers, these seemed to belong to the city. “First priority: food,” Mira declared. “Then information.” They found a small open-air eatery near one of the central plazas. The owner, a cheerful woman with faint glowing tattoos on her arms, served them bowls of steaming stew made with glowing vegetables and tender meat, plus flatbread still warm from the stone oven. For payment, they traded a few more small metal pieces from the Jeep that Rowan had salvaged. While eating, they listened to the conversations around them. “…Veilbreaker’s forces growing bolder in the Shadow Marshes…” “…three new rifts opened last week…” “…the Oracle of Aetherhold might know something…” Aria leaned in. “We need to find this Oracle or some scholars who study the rifts.” After their meal, they made their way toward the Grand Athenaeum — a colossal library complex at the heart of the city. The building itself floated slightly above the main island, connected by a wide crystal bridge lined with statues of ancient guardians. Inside, the Athenaeum was overwhelming. Shelves stretched upward into impossible heights, books and glowing crystals floating freely between levels. Scholars and students moved between them using small platforms of condensed air. Rowan’s eyes lit up like it was Christmas morning. “This place is incredible. The knowledge here…” A middle-aged scholar with neatly trimmed silver hair and deep blue robes noticed their group lingering. His name was Professor Elandor Voss, and he specialized in rift phenomena. “You four are new here,” he said, studying them with sharp but kind eyes. “And you carry the scent of recent crossing. Unstable signatures. Come with me.” He led them to a quiet side chamber filled with ancient maps and glowing orbs. After they hesitantly shared their story — the car accident, the rift, their powers — Professor Voss listened without interruption. “Your arrival was not random,” he said finally. “The Veil between worlds has been weakening for centuries, but recent events have accelerated it. The Veilbreaker — once a scholar like myself — seeks to shatter the barriers completely. He believes he can absorb the power of multiple worlds. Your family line… the Kanes… has old blood ties to Elyndor. One of your ancestors sealed a major rift long ago. The power you carry may be a gift… or a curse.” Mira crossed her arms. “So what? We’re supposed to be heroes now?” “Not necessarily heroes,” Voss replied. “But you are involved. The Veilbreaker’s followers will not stop hunting you. Your powers are rare — a direct connection to the primal forces of this world.” He gave them a small glowing crystal. “This will help mask your signatures for a short time. Stay in the city tonight. Tomorrow, I can introduce you to the Oracle. She may know how to send you home… or why you were brought here.” That night, they stayed in a modest inn on one of the lower floating islands. For the first time since arriving, they had actual beds and a locked door. But peace didn’t last. In the middle of the night, Aria woke to the sound of shouting and running footsteps. She rushed to the window. Dark purple cloaks were moving through the streets below — more than they had seen before. “They found us,” she whispered. The group quickly gathered their things. As they slipped out the back, Finn’s powers suddenly surged. A strong gust of wind knocked over several pursuers, buying them time. Mira pulled them through a series of shadows, teleporting across rooftops. Rowan summoned thick vines to block alleyways. Aria created golden force fields to deflect crossbow bolts. They fled toward the higher levels of the city, eventually hiding inside an abandoned observation tower overlooking the floating islands. Panting and pressed together in the small space, they realized how much they had improved in just a few days — but also how dangerous their situation had become. “We can’t keep running forever,” Aria said, looking at each of them. “If the Oracle can help us get home, we go see her tomorrow. But if this Veilbreaker is really trying to destroy both worlds… we might not have a choice but to fight.” Finn leaned against the wall, sparks still dancing in his hair. “I’m in. As long as we do it together.” Mira smirked despite the fear in her eyes. “Someone has to keep you three from getting killed.” Rowan adjusted his glasses. “For once, I agree with Mira. We need a real plan.” As the twin moons bathed the floating city in silver and violet light, the four friends sat together in the tower, powers humming beneath their skin. Aetherhold, for all its beauty, no longer felt safe. Something ancient was stirring. And they were right in the middle of it. _Chapter ends_
