Chapter 4: The Awakening of the Wolf.
Maya's POV
After the brutal attack by the rogue wolves, I was badly injured. I fell to the ground as my body trembled in which I gasped for breath; pain seared through every inch of me. My blurred vision and the world around me faded in and out of focus. I was on the brink of death—I could feel it.
My body was shutting down, my heart slowing with each passing second, but then I met a woman who introduced herself as Serena Moonshadow, the woman who had saved me from the hands of the rogue wolves, she's the most powerful witch in the land.
I saw her healing power and listened to her incantations, which I barely understood; she stood over me; her dark eyes gleamed with something I couldn't comprehend—maybe curiosity, or was it something more?
“Maya" she softly spoke, kneeling beside me. "I see something in you, something special, you're not met to die like this”
I wanted to speak but my throat burned, and no words came out. Instead, I could only look at her, silently pleading for help.
Serena tilted her head as if considering something. “There's a way, but it's dangerous,” she slowly said. “It’s an ancient magic that can change your very existence. Are you willing to take the risk?”
I couldn't respond, but I nodded, what choice did I have? It was either I die here or grab the opportunity she was offering. And if I lived I would make sure Asher paid for what he did to me.
His rejection created a whole lot of havoc in my life, and I also thought he planned the rogue werewolf's attack on me.
“Very well,” Serena whispered, her fingers gently brushing my forehead. “This won't be easy, Maya, but when it's done, you’ll be stronger than you ever imagined; this is of great advantage”.
“How can I be stronger than I imagined, yet the path seems to be dangerous," I whispered to myself.
Her words still kept me in contemplation but her touch sent shivers down my spine, making my body weak, and I wasn’t sure how much more I could take. Still, I had to survive. I had to.
Serena stood up, lifting her arms toward the full moon that hung high in the night sky. I could see the air around us humming with energy, the magic swirling like a storm waiting to be unleashed.
“I hereby summoned the spirit and by the power of the moon, I called upon the ancient forces,” Serena chanted, her voice growing louder with each word. “Grant this soul the strength of the wolf. Transform her into something greater.”
Immediately I felt the occurences—the shift in the air, the pull of magic on my body made my skin tingle, and then the pain hit. It was unlike anything I’d ever felt before. It wasn’t just the aches and bruises from my battle with death. This was something deeper, something tearing me apart from the inside.
I screamed, my back arching off the ground as my bones began to crack and shift.
The pain became more severe as I screamed with the cracking of bones which was reforming every part of me, and it felt like I was being ripped in two. My hands clawed at the earth beneath me, trying to ground myself, but it was no use. The pain consumed me.
“You’ve got to stay strong, Maya," Serena's voice cut through the agony, but my mind was hazy. The world spun, and I could feel my body changing in ways I couldn't control; my bone snapped, my muscles stretched, and my skin burned as if it were on fire.
But then something shifted. The pain began to dull which was replaced by something similar to an electrical energy coursing through me.
My senses sharpened. I could hear the rustling of leaves in the distance, smelling the fresh air beneath me and I could feel the growing power inside of me. I wasn't just healing, I was becoming something else.
A growl rumbled from my throat and I realized it wasn't fear I felt anymore–It was a strength I developed.
Selena stepped closer, her eyes locked on me. “You're almost there, Maya; embrace it, just embrace the wolf within.”
With a final scream, I let go. I let the transformation take over, my body shifting completely into the form of a wolf. My fur was dark, almost black, and my limbs felt powerful, full of strength I’d never known before.
I stood on shaky legs, panting heavily, but I was no longer the weak girl I had been. I wasn’t the same Maya who Asher had rejected, the one he’d left broken and lost. No, I was something new. Something stronger.
Serena smiled, her eyes glinting in the moonlight. “You’re reborn, Maya. You’re no longer just a girl. You're now a wolf—a force to be reckoned with.”
The cool night air filled my lungs while I took a deep breath. I felt more alive than I had ever been. The power inside me was intoxicating, and with it came a flood of emotions—anger, rage, betrayal.
“Asher must pay” I growled, my voice rough but determined. “He will regret ever hurting me, I promise".
Serena nodded. "Yes, he will, but you’ve to be careful, Maya. This new power comes with a price: don't be too carried away because you’ve unlocked a part of yourself you can't control yet”.
I narrowed my eyes on her. “What do you mean? What part of myself I couldn't control?”. I curiously asked.
“There are forces at play you don’t understand,” Serena warned, her expression turning serious. “You’ve become something more than just a werewolf. The ritual I performed wasn’t just about turning you into one of them. You’re different and stronger, Maya. “but also more dangerous.”
My body was trembling, gripping in fear, and my heart pounded in my chest. “What are you saying?” I asked.
“I’m saying you’ll have enemies now—more than just Asher. Others will come for you, drawn to the power you now possess. You must be ready.”
I clenched my fists, feeling the strength in my new form. “Let them come. I’m not afraid.”
Serena gave me a look that sent a chill down my spine. “You should be.”
Her words hung in the air, and for the first time since the transformation, doubt crept i
nto my mind. What had she done to me? What kind of power had I gained?
