Chapter 15: A Kiss and a Lie

472 Words
The morning sun rose slowly over the desert. Ari and Kellan lay close beneath a worn blanket, their bodies warm despite the cool air. His arms were wrapped around her, her head on his chest. For the first time in days, they felt peace. But peace, Ari knew, was just the silence before another storm. She looked up at him, studying his face—the sharp jawline, the scar above his eyebrow, the soft way his lips curled when he slept. She loved him. And that terrified her. “Are you awake?” she whispered. “I am now,” Kellan murmured with a sleepy smile. “And I don’t want to be anywhere else.” Ari kissed him, slow and deep. It was the kind of kiss that said everything she couldn’t say out loud—I love you. I need you. I’m afraid of what’s coming. But there was something she didn’t tell him. Not yet. The memory chip from her mother—it was still in her jacket pocket. And on it was something she hadn’t dared look at. Something about her. — Later that day, the group gathered in the safe house. Mara was recovering, but her eyes were sharp. Nova was scanning encrypted files, fingers flying over the keyboard. “Paragon’s moved,” Nova said. “He’s relocating his core lab to the mountain base. If he finishes the transfer, he’ll have control over the entire Flame Network.” “And Ari?” Mara asked. “If she gets too close, he could activate her.” Kellan looked at Ari. “We don’t have to do this. We can run.” But Ari shook her head. “I won’t spend my life hiding. Not from him. Not from myself.” She turned to Nova. “I need the truth.” Nova handed her a data drive. “This has the contents of the chip your mother gave you. You sure?” Ari nodded. She plugged it in. The screen lit up with files. One caught her eye: Project Ember: Final Protocol. She opened it. And her heart stopped. — Inside the file: > “Subject Ari is genetically bonded to the Flame Code. Final activation will increase her strength tenfold—but destroy her memory, emotional identity, and ability to feel human connection.” > “In other words: she’ll forget who she loves.” — Ari closed the screen. Her hands trembled. Kellan came to her. “What is it?” She forced a smile. “Nothing important.” She kissed him again—harder this time, more desperate. Because now she knew: If they failed… If she let Paragon win… She might still be alive— But she’d forget him. Forget this. Forget love. — And that was the most dangerous fate of all. ---
