The Night before Dawn
Years later, Tia completed high school and entered into a medical university. One afternoon, she left Mal-city hospital earlier than usual. Together with the friends, they decided to walk. Then a few meters away from their quarters, she heard a weak voice calling ‘help… Help…’
The voice came from a man who was drunk. She walked close to see what had gone wrong with him. However, friends pulled her away, ‘he’s a drunk man playing tricks!’ they cautioned her.
‘He’s not well, maybe he can use our help!’ she retorted. They left him and continued walking towards the quarters.
The man’s name was Jack. He was obsessed with the world, he drunk alcohol and felt like the world was spinning round. Now he thought he was going to die.
Few hours later, Tia told the friends ‘I am going to check on him.’
‘What!’ they expressed surprise.
‘I want to know if he’s gone home.’ She answered.
‘And if not?’ friends persisted since they perceived it unnecessary.
‘I will take him.’ She responded.
‘To where?’ they opened their ears to hear but she left their eyes in action. Thus, she did not answer them.
She found Jack and took him to their quarters. That made her friends so annoyed. They told Tia to take him back or to leave him outside the house.
‘Take him back!’ however, she did not respond. She closed the door and put a cushion under his head.
Around 4 am, she went to check how he was doing. She headed towards the door where he was sleeping. She did not find him.
The friends could not stop talking about his presence in their home. It created a frosty environment. Therefore, Jack left the house without knowing the person that had helped him.
‘I may not know who you are, but I will always remember.’ He told himself just before walking out of the gate.
Shortly before end of the dawn, friends walked out of the bedrooms and saw her standing by the door facing the gate. They asked her, ‘what’s the matter Tia?’
Tia also asked them, ‘I did not hurt you, did I?’
Allyn had watched everything that happened. Starting from the time they left the hospital until the time that Jack left the quarters.
In the evening, the friends took Tia with them and drove to a pub. While there, Allyn saw them and went to talk to her.
She introduced herself, ‘Hi am Dr. Allyn’
‘Oh I am Tia’ she responded.
Allyn talked to them like a Doctor until Tia’s friends, visited the bathroom.
Allyn then told Tia, ‘You are a kind person.’
Tia choked, ‘Maybe not that much.’ They continued to drink.
Tia then asked, ‘Have we met before?’
Allyn seemed perplexed. ‘Ah no, sometimes we meet people in awkward places, I hope my presence does not bother you’
Allyn talked a lot and asked Tia again, ‘What would you do if the earth were destroyed?’
Tia found the subject miles away, she put aside her glass of wine. ‘What do you mean? Why would the earth be destroyed? By who?’
Allyn answered, ‘Let us assume, it just happened,’
Tia looked into the plain eyes of Allyn. ‘What would you do yourself?’
Allyn sensed changes in her mood and joked, ‘Maybe dig a hole and hide.’ They laughed. ‘Can we take a walk outside?’ she asked Tia.
‘Yeah sure.’ She responded.
While strolling around, Tia saw Jack, ‘Just a moment.’ She told Allyn.
Jack had gone to buy cough mixture but had found the chemist closed an hour earlier.
‘It’s not yet time to close!’ he protested and asked them to reopen.
‘It’s always time if we are closed!’ the pharmacist had responded.
Jack turned to go back but Tia called and guided, ‘Hey! You want medicine? Walk for a few yards and turn to your right, there’s a chemist.’ She told him.
Allyn was close by, ‘Why are you so kind to him?’
‘Anybody can give directions,’ she answered.
Suddenly, they heard sounds of bombs busting. Marsho was destroying communication towers on the planet. Thus, they cut off communication between family members. Extended families were not considered anymore. Each family concentrated on the immediate blood tie.
‘This isn’t good,’ Tia whispered.
Allyn grabbed Tia’s hand as she watched the spirits passing by, ‘why are you protecting her life?’ they asked Allyn. ‘I want information. I will hand her to you when I am done,’ Allyn answered them using inaudible wave sound.
Allyn desired to see Tia exalt herself with pride. However, she did not see what she expected. Seeing Tia helping a drunk man pushed her far from exalting herself. And though she protected Tia, she did not know her.
