I sat in home period thinking to this morning. It all felt a little too easy. Atlas hadn’t even been a little apprehensive about drinking the orange juice even though I had never served him anything before. Now thinking back on it he did seem a bit uneasy, like his attention was elsewhere. I wondered if it had to do with pack affairs. As students talked around me and more entered the room, I thought back to a couple days ago.
This is it. In my hands right now was the potion to create a fake mate bond between two werewolves. “And it will work?” I asked Xavier. He nodded, “It does. The coven responsible for its creation tested it many times I was told. No room for faults or errors.” He spoke so sure of everything. It was honestly a bit reassuring since I had grown a bit nervous now being here and at this point. I didn’t even think the feud between the Sun and Moon Territories would have been going on this long. Sometimes I would get comfortable, sit, and think about it; think how silly this all was and that it didn’t seem worth it. Sometimes I would talk to Xavier about these feelings. He understood me. We had both been sent away by our home, our families, not knowing if we would ever see them again. And for what? For some century long feud. But Xavier would always assure me that our goal here would make a difference, a good difference. I still wasn’t sure but decided to agree and stay committed to the plan.
I was pulled out of my daydream when I felt something small and hard hit the back of my head. I turned around. There was Silas and 2 of his friends snickering to themselves looking in my direction. I looked at the ground and there was a small eraser. How childish… I thought as I rolled my eyes. I picked up the eraser off the floor and honestly had half the mind to throw it right back at them, but I thought better. He was still the son of the Alpha, and I knew I shouldn’t be causing trouble or drawing excess attention to myself, throwing this would probably be both. I threw the eraser into one of the nearest trash can of course making it.
The teacher came in and addressed the class, “Good morning, everyone. I know we just came back from winter break, but it is now time to return our focus to your schoolwork. As seniors you have finally reached the home stretch and in just a few months you will all be graduating and moving on to your next chapter. Let’s finish strong.” Mr. Smith said. He was 5’10, had short blondish-brown hair with blue eyes; he was muscular but lean, overall, in werewolf terms he was average. He was my favorite teacher though because he was also the English teacher, which was my favorite subject.
I sighed inwardly. Was I even going to finish high school? I don’t know why but the idea of not finishing high school here made me kind of sad. I just pushed that thought out of my mind because I know if I thought too long and too hard about my feelings regarding everything, I may have to face something I’ve been pushing deep down. The only thing I needed to do right now was focus on my schooling. I actually really enjoyed school. Reading and learning new things felt like an escape from my reality. When I was younger Xavier used to tell me to stop getting distracted by books but as we got older, he ended up actually buying me books, surprising me with new ones when he got back from trips to other packs.
Before I knew it the bell rang, and home period was done. Students started fleeing the classroom out into the hall. Just as I was going to get up and head to the door my path was blocked. I looked up and there was Silas, “Listen Ruby. Can we talk?” he asked looking me straight in the eyes. I was confused since even alone he rarely spoke to me so… Respectful. I looked around, the classroom was now empty, “I really need to get to my next class Silas.” I said, trying to step around him but he grabbed my wrist before I could completely pass him. He turned me and pulled me close to him. I was trapped between him and a desk. “Silas let me go-!” I cried out before Silas crashed his lips into mine. I gasped and he took this opportunity to stick his tongue inside my mouth. Without any warning at all I was locked in a heated kiss with him, my first kiss taken. Despite my anger my knees felt weak, and I felt a heat spreading through my lower body. I pushed him off, “What are you doing?!” I shouted at him, wiping my mouth from the sloppy kiss. “Happy birthday Ru-“ Silas started but stopped as his two friends barged into the room. “Hey dude what are you…doing?”, their faces puzzled as they looked between Silas and myself. I agreed, what was he doing?
Silas looked nervous for a second and then composed himself. He looked at them then back at me with narrow eyes “She tried to talk to me. I was just putting this brat back into her place.” Dumb and dumber in the corner snickered. He looked back at me, “Do not speak to me again without permission. Don’t forget.” he snarled the last part. He then left with his friends in tow, leaving me now alone in the classroom out of breath and really confused. What just happened?
