The Bank Holds the Truth

1010 Words
No one spoke. The anonymous message glowed on every phone screen. DON’T GO TO THE BANK. OR YOU’LL BURY HER NEXT TO HER FATHER. Naomi stared at the words. Her father. For years she had believed he died before she was old enough to remember him. Now she wasn’t even sure that was true. Rachel was the first to break the silence. “They know about the key.” Arthur frowned. “That’s impossible.” “The box has been locked for over twenty years.” Rachel looked at him. “Then someone has been watching this family for over twenty years.” The realization settled heavily over everyone. William slowly sat down. “I never told anyone about Daniel’s box.” Jaxon looked at him. “Are you certain?” William nodded. “I swore on my wife’s grave.” Naomi tightened her grip on the silver key. “If we don’t go to the bank…” “We’ll never know what’s inside.” “And if we do,” Rachel replied, “we could be walking into a trap.” Jaxon folded his arms. “Then we make it our trap.” Rachel raised an eyebrow. “I’m listening.” Jaxon walked toward the large table in the center of the vault. “We announce that Naomi is staying at the mansion.” “We make sure the media sees us here.” Arthur nodded slowly. “But?” “But Naomi won’t actually be here.” Rachel understood immediately. “You’ll send a decoy.” Jaxon smiled. “Exactly.” Arthur looked thoughtful. “We have two female security officers about Naomi’s height.” Rachel nodded. “They’ll wear identical clothes.” “The media won’t know the difference.” Naomi looked at Jaxon. “And me?” “You, Arthur, Rachel and I will go to the bank before sunrise.” She frowned. “Without telling anyone.” “Exactly.” William smiled proudly. “That’s the grandson I raised.” Three hours later… The mansion appeared quiet. Television reporters still camped outside the front gates. Just as Jaxon expected. At exactly six o’clock in the morning, a black SUV rolled out of the main entrance. Inside sat a woman wearing Naomi’s sunglasses and coat. The reporters immediately chased after the vehicle. Camera crews followed. Within seconds, every news van disappeared down the road. Arthur smiled. “The bait worked.” Meanwhile, another vehicle quietly exited through an underground service tunnel beneath the mansion. No cameras. No reporters. No attention. Naomi sat in the back seat beside Jaxon. Rachel occupied the front passenger seat while Arthur drove. For nearly thirty minutes, no one spoke. Finally Naomi looked out the window. “So…” “What if the message was right?” Jaxon turned toward her. “What do you mean?” “What if my father really is dead?” He reached across the seat and gently squeezed her hand. “Then today gives you peace.” “And if he isn’t?” His eyes met hers. “Then today changes everything.” Naomi looked down at their hands. She noticed he hadn’t let go. Surprisingly… She didn’t want him to. The SUV stopped outside an old stone building in downtown Manhattan. A brass sign read: First National Bank. Rachel stepped out first. She scanned the street. “No suspicious activity.” Arthur nodded. “The building is clear.” Together they entered the bank. The lobby was nearly empty. A gray-haired bank manager approached them with a polite smile. “Good morning.” “How may I help you?” Naomi placed the silver key on the counter. The manager’s smile vanished. His eyes widened. “Where did you get this?” “It belonged to my father.” The man picked up the key carefully. “I haven’t seen one of these in decades.” He looked toward Naomi again. “May I have your name?” “Naomi Brooks.” He froze. Then quietly asked, “Naomi… Carter?” Naomi blinked. “Carter?” “I’ve never used that surname.” The manager slowly nodded. “I see.” He looked around the lobby before lowering his voice. “Please follow me.” They walked through several secured doors before reaching a private underground vault. The manager unlocked one of the oldest safety deposit boxes. Number 117. He inserted his master key. Then handed the second lock to Naomi. “Only you can open it.” Her hands trembled. She inserted the silver key. Click. The lock released. Inside the box sat only three items. A leather journal. A sealed envelope. And a small velvet pouch. Naomi reached for the envelope first. Across the front were five handwritten words. Open only if necessary. Rachel examined the journal. “No title.” Jaxon picked up the velvet pouch. Inside was an old gold necklace. Attached to it was a tiny pendant engraved with the letter N. Naomi smiled through her tears. “My father bought this for me.” William’s voice echoed in her memory. Happy Birthday, my little star. She carefully placed the necklace around her neck. It fit perfectly. As if it had been waiting for her all these years. Rachel handed Naomi the leather journal. “I think this is what your father wanted you to find.” Naomi opened the first page. Her smile slowly faded. The very first sentence read: If you are reading this, they have finally found you. A cold chill spread through the room. Jaxon moved closer. “What does the next page say?” Naomi turned it. Her hands began shaking. There was only one line written across the page. The man you call Jaxon Hayes is also in danger because of you. Naomi looked up in horror. At that exact moment… A deafening explosion ripped through the bank. The ground shook violently beneath their feet. The lights went out. The vault doors slammed shut. And somewhere beyond the thick steel walls… People began screaming.
