The explosion shook the underground vault with terrifying force.
The lights went out instantly.
Naomi screamed as the floor lurched beneath her feet.
Jaxon caught her before she fell.
“It’s okay.”
His voice was calm despite the chaos.
“I’m here.”
Dust rained from the ceiling.
Somewhere beyond the thick steel door, people were shouting.
Car alarms blared outside.
Rachel pulled a flashlight from her jacket.
Its narrow beam cut through the darkness.
“Everyone stay together.”
Arthur immediately checked William’s box.
“The documents are safe.”
Jaxon looked toward the vault door.
“Can we open it?”
The bank manager hurried to the control panel.
His hands shook as he pressed several buttons.
Nothing happened.
He tried again.
Still nothing.
“The system is dead.”
Rachel frowned.
“What about the emergency release?”
“It only works when the power is on.”
Naomi felt panic rising in her chest.
“So we’re trapped?”
“For now.”
Arthur pulled out his phone.
“No signal.”
Rachel checked hers.
“Mine too.”
The explosion had knocked out every network inside the building.
Jaxon remained surprisingly calm.
“There has to be another exit.”
The manager nodded.
“There is.”
“But it’s only for employees.”
“Show us.”
The manager led them to the back of the vault.
Behind a row of old safety deposit boxes was a narrow steel door.
He entered a security code.
A red light flashed.
ACCESS DENIED.
“The power failure locked it.”
Arthur stepped forward.
“Move.”
He examined the electronic lock.
“If I can remove the panel…”
Rachel handed him a multitool.
“You’ve got five minutes.”
Arthur removed the metal cover.
Loose wires hung from the damaged circuit board.
Naomi watched helplessly.
She had never felt so powerless.
Jaxon noticed her trembling hands.
He gently took them in his.
“Look at me.”
She did.
“We’re getting out.”
“What if this wasn’t just an explosion?”
He understood immediately.
“You think they knew we’d come.”
“They warned us not to.”
His expression darkened.
“They knew about the bank.”
“They knew about the key.”
Rachel turned toward them.
“They didn’t just know.”
“They expected you.”
A loud metallic bang echoed from somewhere above.
Everyone froze.
Another bang followed.
The sound of heavy footsteps.
Someone was moving through the bank.
Arthur looked toward the ceiling.
“That’s not rescue.”
Rachel slowly unholstered her pistol.
“No.”
“It’s too soon.”
The footsteps stopped directly above the vault.
Then…
Silence.
Naomi held her breath.
A distorted voice echoed through the ventilation system.
“Good morning, Naomi.”
Her heart nearly stopped.
The voice was calm.
Almost friendly.
“Did you enjoy your father’s gift?”
Jaxon’s fists clenched.
“Who are you?”
The voice ignored him.
“You’ve caused us quite a bit of trouble.”
Rachel stepped beneath the vent.
“This is Detective Rachel Morgan.”
“If you’re listening, surrender now.”
Soft laughter echoed through the speakers.
“I admire your optimism, Detective.”
Naomi swallowed.
“What do you want from me?”
The laughter stopped.
“We want what belongs to us.”
“I don’t have anything.”
“You do.”
She looked down at the journal in her hands.
The voice continued.
“Daniel Carter stole something many years ago.”
“He hid it.”
“He died before telling us where.”
Naomi looked at Jaxon.
“I don’t know what he’s talking about.”
“I believe you.”
The voice became colder.
“But we don’t.”
Jaxon stepped forward.
“If you want something…”
“Come and face me.”
“We both know this has nothing to do with Naomi.”
The stranger laughed again.
“Oh, Jaxon.”
“You still think you’re the hero.”
The words made Jaxon’s face harden.
“You know me.”
“I’ve known you since you were a child.”
Silence filled the vault.
William looked stunned.
“What?”
The voice continued.
“I watched you become a football star.”
“I watched you build your company.”
“And I watched you marry the one person who could destroy everything.”
Naomi frowned.
“What does that mean?”
“You’ll learn soon enough.”
The speakers crackled.
Then the voice spoke one final sentence.
“Open the journal to page thirty seven.”
The transmission ended.
Rachel looked at Naomi.
“Don’t.”
“It could be another trap.”
Naomi stared at the worn leather journal.
Her father had left it for her.
Surely it contained answers.
Slowly, she turned the pages.
Thirty.
Thirty one.
Thirty two.
Her hands trembled harder with every page.
Finally…
Page thirty seven.
A folded document slipped onto the floor.
Arthur picked it up.
His eyes widened.
“What is it?” Jaxon asked.
Arthur unfolded the paper.
It was a birth certificate.
Naomi leaned closer.
Her smile disappeared.
The document read:
Name: Naomi Grace Carter
Father: Daniel Carter
Mother: Sophia Carter
Then, beneath it…
A second certificate.
Arthur’s face turned pale.
“No…”
Jaxon frowned.
“What?”
Arthur slowly handed him the paper.
Jaxon’s eyes scanned the page.
He looked up at William in disbelief.
“Grandpa…”
William’s cane slipped from his hand and clattered onto the floor.
His lips trembled.
“It can’t be.”
Naomi’s voice was barely audible.
“What is it?”
Jaxon looked at her, unable to hide the shock on his face.
“The second birth certificate…”
He swallowed hard.
“…has my name on it.”
Naomi stared at him.
The two certificates had the same date.
The same hospital.
The same delivery room.
They hadn’t just met by chance.
They had entered the world…
On the very same day.
